In so many ways Darth Vader actually represents the ideal which Jedi claimed to be striving for. I know that sounds crazy so hear me out.

Jedi preached detachment. Let go of your emotional attachments and do what must be done to accomplish your goals. For 20 years before Luke shows up, Vader is all over that.

The Jedi preached obedience to the Chancellor, Senate, and external authority even if you disagree. Once again, Vader is the most obedient.

The Jedi say ‘this weapon is your life.’ Vader epitomizes this philosophy. He has no life outside of his use as a weapon.

By contrast, he’s actually a pretty terrible Sith. They’re supposed to be about sneakiness, ambition, and backstabbing. For 20 years, Vader wants nothing more than to be Sidious’s obedient doormat. In fact, when he finally starts scheming about Luke, Sidious congratulates him on finally acting a true Sith for once.

That was the joke, yet, it also might have been his “hidden will” as well.

When we met Anakin for the first time he had his own will or at least we’ve seen a glimpse of it when he snapped at Padmé for calling him a slave. “I’m a person and my name is Anakin!”

When the Jedi wanted him to act like a Jedi he turned into Sith…

When the Sith wanted him to act like a Sith he turned into Jedi…

In other words, that’s his way of saying: FUCK YOU!

And sucks at being a Sith as much as Anakin Skywalker sucked at being a Jedi.
