Thinking about the whole "there is no platonic explanation for this" thing and how it doesn't account for intense platonic situationships and anyways I think we should start saying "there is no casual explanation for this" bc really what we're talking about is the way the characters in question are Obsessed with each other

what the horsemen would play in d&d 5e*:

atlas: elf wizard. we know this. rules lawyer, but someone's gotta.

jack: kenku rogue, and it's fun that he can do the mimicry thing for real during rp.

merritt: halfling bard. whore.

henley: eladrin artificer. she is the only one who owns books other than the phb, and it shows. very weird fiddly minmaxed character, constantly getting in arguments with atlas about how her extremely specific build works.

lula: tiefling warlock (because their perma-dm dylan didn't allow her edgy oathbreaker paladin build.)

bosco: human sorcerer. does not know the difference between this and wizard because charlie built the character for him.

charlie: half-elf paladin. yes i did think about giving him sorceror for honor among thieves reasons, but let's not get too meta about it. they needed this for party comp because you KNOW merritt is never remembering he has healing spells.

june: i know rogue is also tempting here, but no. half-orc barbarian. let her smash shit.

*sticking to relatively base classes and races because if i wanted to get REALLY in the weeds with this, i'd just do pathfinder instead

been pondering this for a while and finally decided to make a late night post on it SO. here are my horsemen dnd class headcanons.

a few precursors: these are not the classes i think they'd play, but the classes i think they'd be in a dnd setting (which, also, an unsleeping city vibe nysm au would be so cool). these are just my personal headcanons! they might not align with yours and that's cool, these are just my personal thoughts

j. daniel atlas: storm sorcerer

had to be a sorcerer. ofc he's a sorcerer. he might know a lot about magic but it's also an innate talent of his. it's who he is AND what he does. he can't do anything else. he's tried.

the subclass was the trickier part but i went with storm sorcerer bc it ties to the rain trick in nysm2 and the water bubble trick in nysm itself. god if he could summon lightning he'd be so annoying forever

crucially, sorcerers are charisma casters. danny is the "showman." he's annoying offstage but electric on it. charisma is crucial to being a magician

merritt mckinney: divination wizard

well mads that just can't be, you might say. why is merritt a wizard and daniel a sorcerer? surely they should be flipped

WRONG. mentalism, according to merritt himself, has some basis in psychology and neurology. neurolinguistic programming. it's a thing that you can learn and its very cool but knowing how to do it as well as he does takes RESEARCH.

divination, obviously--to "divine" involves seeing the future, in the traditional sense of the class, but the word also refers to seeing the truth. to divine the truths people want to hide. the first thing we see him do in nysm is expose an affair!

jack wilder: arcane trickster rogue

i went back and forth one whether to make him a fighter or a rogue but while i think he multiclasses into fighter, arcane trickster is just too good of a fit for him

high dex, has a significant advantage in a fight when he sneaks up on people (see: fuller, also dylan in nysm1), proficiency in sleight of hand, does most of the dirty work behind the scenes

arcane trickster involves illusion magic, perfect for con artistry. also one of the first spells learned is mage hand, which he'd absolutely use to pickpocket even more people

henley reeves: college of whispers bard

there's no way i'm doing horsemen dnd classes without having at least one bard (trust me, there's more coming) and henley is absolutely perfect for one. look at how she's introduced in nysm! out of all of the original horsemen, she's the one on a giant, glittering stage making the audience fall for her version of the world

college of whispers is also perfect for a hacker and con artist--she's ruthless, taking the information she gleans and using it against people. usually her marks, but she's just as good at destabilizing her team if they piss her off. see: atlas, nysm2

ALSO a charisma-based caster, which is very fun for me given her resentment of atlas and their weird love-hate-respect dynamic in the first nysm movie. she's just. charismatic. everyone loves a bard.

notably, henley lies about being college of whispers for a while. atlas is the only one who knows and he doesn't call her on it

lula may: college of glamour bard

who could you replace a bard with but ANOTHER bard? lula gives such theatre kid energy that i had to also give her the bard treatment, but she's college of glamour for sure

glamour uses their magic and their performances to "delight and captivate" and audiences are often left "in awe and fear". legendary performances? impossibly memorable? insane, mind-bending, delightfully gorey illusions? why, that's lula may, of course!

notably i do think she also multiclasses into warlock at some point. perhaps during the ten year hiatus ("lula how did you just cast eldritch blast" "oh my patron" "your WHAT") but at least for the duration of nysm2. bard. that speech she gives saying that the horsemen don't give up? she just gave everyone 1d8 bardic inspiration

dylan shrike: oath of vengeance paladin

do i really need to say anything

genuinely. like. he dedicated thirty years to his ultimate revenge on thaddeus bradley. i think that counts as an oath, and by god he saw it through. additionally, the oath of vengeance also is an oath of vengeance against those that harm and manipulate those without power, so despite him achieving his revenge, his mission as a member of the eye (to balance the scales against the rich and powerful) still aligns

plus this party is in desperate need of a healer. good lord. someone has to be able to cast prayer of healing and revivify. his horsemen are too reckless for him NOT to have healing spells on hand

bosco leroy: college of valor bard

i told you there were more bards! kid's a failed actor and a born grifter cmon. bosco leroy + disguise self and thaumaturgy would be an absolute menace and i am so unbelievably here for it. like jack i do think he multiclasses into fighter eventually but he starts as a bard

college of valor bards believe in heroism and in the power of the people they see as heroic so much that it gives them magic in turn. bosco believes in june and charlie so much that he'd do anything to protect them, and if that turns into spellcasting and performance, well, so be it. he's watching his best friends in the world change it for the better, and as a college of valor bard, he wants to make sure the world remembers them forever

every time june and charlie use a bardic he just gives them another one instantly. it's almost a running bit except it's actually quite sweet

june rouclere: way of shadow monk

originally i was going to have her be another rogue but honestly her dexterity and acrobatics in nysm:nyd were too good for me to put her as anything but a monk. monks specialize in insane physical control (her parkour scene, hello?) and june's fighting style in most of the movie involved her dodging and redirecting most hits when she couldnt escape, which aligns pretty well with monk

way of shadow specifically specializes in being sneaky (rogue tie-in! possible future multiclass). they're excellent spies, thieves, con artists, and what does june do at the start of nysm1? basically trick a confession to crypto-crimes out of her mark right before he's exposed onstage.

it also involves her catching details that most people might miss, like figuring out that the door to the chateau was a puzzle and not a traditional lock (though, granted, she knew that ahead of time. but i digress!)

charlie vanderberg: mastermind rogue

once again. do i really have to say anything

for the sake of saying something, this guy at twenty years old near-effortlessly manipulated and maneuvered the horsemen into doing exactly what he needed them to do like they were pieces on a chessboard. and he did SUCH A GOOD JOB. unbeLIEVABLY mastermind-coded

masterminds dig out secrets and use words as weapons and that's exactly what he did to veronika, haunting her every step and pushing her into a corner and taunting her until she incriminated herself live onstage. charlie vanderberg is an incredibly talented and dangerous mastermind rogue and ouuuuugh i love him
