Who the hell are you guys? I’m Matt. He’s Foggy.

bbc sherlock: ~i'm not a psychopath, i'm a high-functioning sociopath, do your research~
cbs elementary sherlock: ...and ours is an era of distraction, it's a... a punishing drumbeat of constant input. this, this cacophony which follows us into our homes and into our beds and seeps into our... into our souls, for want of a better word. for a long time uh, there was only one poultice for my raw nerve endings, and that was, uh.... copious drug use. so in my less productive moments, i'm given to wonder... if i'd just been born when it was a little quieter out there, would i have even become an addict in the first place? might i have been more focused? a more fully realized person?
I’ve said it before and it bears repeating, Elementary! Sherlock is the best modern day depiction of Sherlock Holmes.
Also Lucy Liu is definitely Best Watson <3
Oh easily.
The show got the characters, it got the format that best suited them and it didn’t try and turn a series of enjoyable mystery tales into “I’m the Goddamn Sherlockman”
The movies are okay but they do also suffer the problem of both making Sherlock too much of a jerk at times (He really wasn’t that much of a jerk in the original stories, writers...) and also making EVERYTHING about Moriarty. Moriarty was in TWO of the original stories! TWO! Sherlock did other stuff!
Big brother Tommy Merlyn
Arrow season 8 should just be Oliver traveling around to different Earths and collecting every version of the Green Arrow. Some are alternate Olivers, some are other people wearing the hood (Earth 2 Robert Queen, an Earth where Tommy becomes Green Arrow, Adrian Chase as the GA, maybe Emiko and/or Thea from one). But he just meets at least one different GA per episode and then Crisis on Infinite Earths just has Barry, Kara and the others fighting and things are going badly, and then a portal opens and Oliver just leads his mini army of Green Arrows through, and through immaculate tactical maneuvering, they save the day in like 10 minutes flat.
Most of this is a joke, but I’ve wanted to see Earth 2 Robert since they teased him on Flash, and Green Arrow Tommy and Green Arrow Chase are a pet theory of mine.
I hope Avengers sometimes go to Strange like “I need your help” and he’s like “What’s wrong? Skrulls? Hydra?” and they’re like “I’m congested and it hurts when I swallow.”
You think they ever approach Vision in a similar manner to complain about how the wi-fi router keeps kicking them off the network?
Well, NOW I do.
Peter Parker calls Steve Rogers at midnight and he shows up at Aunt May’s in full uniform, shield at the ready. “You said something about Nazis? Let’s go.”
And Peter’s standing in the doorway in pajamas and like, pikachu slippers, and he’s like, “The AP history test is tomorrow. I need you to tell me everything you know.”
Alternately, I’m now picturing Wanda going to basically anyone else and trying to talk about some issues she and Vis are having, and universally, they all just go “Have you tried turning him off and turning him back on again?”
There are so many good comments on this post but this one deserves a special shout-out.
Peter: So what do you remember about the JFK assassination?
Bucky: I think I killed him
Peter: alrighty then
this entire thing is glorious
This also implies that all of the avengers go to Vision instead of Tony for computer problems, when Tony literally made the computer parts of Vision.
Tony is conflicted, as he doesn’t want to waste his time playing IT guy 24/7 but is also kinda hurt that they don’t trust him with their tech.
Oliver, introducing Mia to the assembled Crisis team: This is my daughter Mia. She’s from the future and she knows 300 different ways to kill a man.
Oliver: And I know 450 ways to kill you if you do anything to hurt or offend her.
*awkward pause as everyone takes that in. Clark opens his mouth to say something*
Mia: And we brainstormed at least 50 ways to kill a Kryptonian.
Oliver: So excited to be working with you all.
Barry: Does she shoot her friends in the back with arrows too?
Mia: I don’t know. Why don’t we find out?
Oliver: That’s my girl
U know what's a good vibe. Batman struggling w teaming up with other superheroes, not bcos he's used to working alone, but bcos he's so used to teaming up w children
His sense of humour has been completely shot for years, all he knows are dad jokes. He has to restrain himself from saying 'hi tired I'm Batman'. He has lollipops & dinosaur band aids in his utility belt. One time he got in an argument w Green Lantern and blurted out 'i think you need to take a nap'
He once tried to make Clark stand in a corner after he was reckless on a mission, and when Clark pointed out that he was an adult, Bruce stormed off muttering about kids these days and why Clark couldn't be more like Nightwing
The seven stages of batman
You are a civilian. Batman is a myth, and a meme
You are a brand new amature rookie superhero. Batman is totally a myth, guys, right? This is just hazing the new guy. lol. I’m too smart for this.
You are a rank and file part time superhero. You know better than to go to Gotham, but you won’t say out loud why.
You are an established superhero. Batman is a founding member of the justice league and probably a vampire.
You are a league reservist. Batman is a ninja Sherlock Holmes CIA Hacktivist and also the thing that lives in your nightmares.
You are a front line justice league member. Batman is a single dad who gives dad advice and makes dad jokes and keeps trying to dad at you.
#secret stage 8: you are a superhero younger than batman #batman is your dad (@skyriderwednesday)
You cannot be your own maker, Samael.
None of us can.
why the fuck is it that tv-show writers seem to think a ship can’t be interesting without a lot of break ups and drama like??? no! give me that healthy, long lasting relationship that is always there but not in the center of attention or the main storyline. i totally dig that, burry those nasty love-triangles deep deep down where nobody can find them ever again. please and thank you.
It's got good time travel insofar as it isn't INconsistent and doesn't contradict its own timelines. But it's still full of illogical and arbitrary rules about timelines and how they interact. For example, why does the universe give a fuck whether some rando lives or dies, or if a clock breaks? Why is that "invariant" in closely related timelines, despite enormously different circumstances of death, and something "unimportant" like who eats a specific burger isn't? Never explained, inexplicably.
Sure, they may not have an ‘explanation’ for that, but every story has its own conflicts to work with. That’s what makes a compelling story in the first place.
Say, in Naruto, despite the hax powers, we have chakra which works in a certain way and in not some other way. There are some people who can control it and there are some who can’t. There are people who can control it in a certain way, and there are people who can control in some other way. It’s not explained and there’s no need for it to be explained because their world is just Like That and we know it. Same thing with My Hero Academia, as to why people get certain type of quirks and why some people don’t.
A more known example: Harry Potter (because Naruto is not very good at consistencies). In this world, some people are witches and wizards. Some are human. There is no known explanation for it (in the books, that is. the other supplementary material does not exist to me.) How magic came to be, how wizards are different from non-magic folks, how non-magic folks end up having magical children in the first place… It’s not explained - the 'science’ is not explained. It’s a fundamental fact that these things Exist and these things Happen, and this is how the foundation for the worldbuilding is made.
In a similar way, Steins;Gate sets its major rule for its own story and worldbuilding, that being the fact that there are certain points fixed in certain timelines that are consistent through and through, ranging from something small such as a watch not working to the imminent death of important people to the start of World War 3. There is no explanation to this rule and there isn’t any need for one because again, these things don’t need to be worked out completely - because most of the times that’s how fantasy/scifi stories work. Steins;Gate uses this rule to create conflict, a 'law’ that this series is built on, and stays true to this rule throughout the story.
I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to receive a proper explanation, but it’s not something that leaves me utterly dissatisfied. Because again, this is a fictional story and we can’t necessarily connect everything to existing science.
That being said, we can always come up with our own theories too ^_^
And tumblr ups the game with a glorious post at the top of my dash when I dust it off after its fitful sleep. Fun. I like fun.
I think anon’s having the (common) sci-fi misnomer problem. This story may be labeled as such for the purposes of genre stratification, but its world doesn’t need to be logical and fleshed-out because that’s not the point.
See, Steins;Gate isn’t actually science fiction. It’s a fantasy playing science dress-up. Replace microwaves with lockets and mad scientists with wizards and you have…pretty much the same story. The same could be said for most of what we commonly call “sci-fi” (see: Star Wars). These stories aim to use their settings primarily as backdrops for the drama, not to let them inform the contents of said drama. So if you were hoping for something straight out of an Issac Asimov book when you put Steins on, you picked the wrong horse.
No, popular culture’s insistence on ridiculous time travel laws as codified tropes in “science fiction” doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. But that’s okay. Most professional fiction writers are neither philosophers nor scientists. They’re allowed to be technically inaccurate and incorporate buzzword-of-the-day.
I disagree with tails on some things, though. The various timelines (there are literally dozens that we see) may be consistent with each other, but the circumstances which lead to that consistency can be painfully contrived at times. Since we’re already talking about the first round of torture-the-flamboyant-kid, I’ll point out that the hard limit on how far back Okabe could send his consciousness? Dumb. Just dumb. He could have—get this—memorized the designs and rebuilt that thing back to the stone age if he so desired, by the story’s own rules. And we all agree that the bloody mess of Princess Rescue #2 was needlessly melodramatic, yes? Okabe feigns stupidity; he is not actually idiotic enough not to check whether his “fake blood” would fool someone before doing physical time travel. And those are just two relatively minor examples.
Of course, these are problems that most stories have when the writers write themselves into corners. Steins;Gate isn’t special in this regard. It’s actually surprisingly good most of the time.
tl;dr the story’s great and it’s terrible and it doesn’t have to be Ringworld to be enjoyable
