"predictive futures investments", aka betting on everything, companies like Kalshi and Polymarket mainly, is probably one of the most evil capitalist ventures we've seen recently.

there are the obvious problems: the lack of regulation makes insider trading completely legal. it encourages gambling addiction and actually infests our larger culture with an obsession with gambling. there are no limits on who can do it, and so even our politicians can place bets.

however, i realized something possibly even more dystopian than those things. what if i told you that the version the Kalshi COO told at a citadel securities conference, that their company wants "the financialization of everything, to create a tradeable asset [out of opinions]," is the SANITIZED version? putting a cut here so i don't clog the dash.

i do not believe in this as some conspiracy. it could be an unintentional byproduct or an extremely cynical way to make money. either way, here's what i think:

the lack of regulation on insider trading makes these predictive markets a means of centralizing and consolidating even more mass wealth to the 1%. a politician or high-ranking corpo can bet on something they already know is going to happen before it happens, and all the money from the more common people betting against them funnels right into their pockets.

this is already happening. one anonymous figure made $400k betting on Maduro's capture 24 hours before it happened. another made $1 million betting on Google search results at the end of the year and got 22 out of 23 guesses correct. this isn't luck: this is insider trading.

this isn't even gambling. these markets exist for those who know what will happen to profit with virtually no chance of failure. gambling is the excuse: what does it matter if they occasionally have to pay out some lucky schmuck compared to the millions, potentially billions rapidly being consolidated among the ruling class? especially if, as those with gambling addictions tend to do, they just put that money back into the system anyway?

stop giving them money. stop betting. see a gambling addiction support group. if a content creator takes a sponsorship or even mentions them with anything but scorn, stop following them. we're early on in this wave, we have the power to stop it.

adding onto this:

a lot of people probably think this post is primarily addressed at conservatives who babyrage at critiques of racism because they can't handle it, and it is, but it's also addressed at white guilt. a lot of people on the american left have the half a brain required to understand that racism is bad but are too sensitive and ignorant to engage with racism discourse healthily. these are the people who selfishly demand validation and encouragement from their poc friends about racism and/or just accept every single take about racism no matter how infantile or deranged.

both of these actively poison the well: the former demands the softening of discourse to appease people who can't handle anything they might even FEEL to be a personal attack. the latter rejects optics, nuance, and critical thinking in favor of constantly trying to out-woke the other person. both of these are detrimental because they still treat accusations of racism as a personal condemnation, either defending against it or using it as a weapon. they're also both racist because they don't view people of color as people, but as a political subject. it's kind of hard to treat other people that way if you actually view them as people.

now, this part is just a personal rant, i understand this is because im white and so im not the one being endlessly prodded for validation, but i find the latter much more obnoxious. if you're insisting i constantly police myself and you're an asshole over my mistakes just because you're projecting insecurity, maybe get over yourself. just because you can't emotionally handle racism doesn't mean i cant. does this mean i might miss out on a valid critique because it's phrased poorly? sure, but to be frank, neither i nor almost anybody else is willing to sit through every asshole's airing of the grievances in the hope that 1% of what they have to say might be slightly helpful. like, vegans have a lot of good points about the ethical crimes of the meat industry, but i don't care to sift through them calling me a murderer or demanding i have debilitating over-empathy for cows to find it. if you're gonna cuss me out over minor infractions im just going to tune you out.

no, being told a joke you made was racist should not require hours of consoling and back-patting and reassurance. no, blowing up at someone over minor disagreements and responding to questions with "it's not my job to explain it to you" is not helpful. grow up.
