Is it podium finishes in a comp? Technique mastery? Proficiency in rolling? I can honestly say that everybody has their own standards and expectations. Personally, my benchmark is character above everything else. After @chriskim118's dominant performance en route to winning Gold in his division, there was zero doubt that he truly deserves his new belt. And so, together with @ian_lee88 and @fangtasticfangers we decided to make Saturday a truly memorable day for one of the nicest and most genuine individuals of the art we love. Presenting the belt to Chris on the podium and seeing his expression was truly rewarding. Chris went on to compete in the Absolutes, taking another Gold medal in the hard fought process and winning a gi and a cash prize. At the end of the night, Chris handed me the cash prize and said, "Coach, I wanted to win this for the gym's flood relief".
