My honest take on the Wind Ancient design as a east asian (korean-am) user, removed from the insane discourse about the familiar, is largely positive still.

The biggest hope I have is that that they seem to have learned and taken the appropriate steps with this ancient release- so that in the future they can do better with more designs from non-white cultures.

In particular, I do hope they're willing to branch out from only using European and East Asian cultures as inspiration for their designs in the future.

I get that they likely don't want to spark the insane discourse with their mostly white userbase but I do think there's ample room for apparel and dragons based off of lots of different cultures if they stick to their guns.

I sympathize with the effort & budget it takes with sensitivity consultants and increased moderation but I do still hold out some hope for them to keep trying to expand outside of their white Western worldview in the future.

curious on if you think that fr's choices were good ones? i know that one person's opinion doesnt mean everything about a culture, but if youd be alright with sharing id be interested to know how someone of the actual culture wouldve handled this?

i wanna start off by saying that i'm korean american, so my judgement can only go so far-- can only speak for the diaspora experience and not the mainland experience, yknow how it goes haha

that being said i think fr did pretty well all things considered, i think it's a good thing that they didn't blend together all the different aspects of the qilin/kirin/girin/ky lân/gilen, i'm generally not suuuper fond of the common occurrence of people blending together asian cultures and calling it a day-- we're all different cultures with similar roots but many many differences. i'm also pretty surprised they went with the korean take on it, since korean mythology is one of the less discussed parts of the culture! i'm def not complaining though, it's nice to see the traditional culture being given recognition

though i think i definitely agree with a good chunk of the userbase in that it's a bit of a shame that their current plan is to have this be a one-and-done charity event, but i'd pitched in the forums at some point that a good solution is for this to be a recurring thing with the same familiar. my main issue with it is the nature of people tends to be that they're gonna potentially price gouge it at some point, and i don't want some kid 3 years from now getting sad they can't get a girin familiar haha

tldr: no complaints about the overall charity aspect of it, i appreciate that they're putting in this much thought into the design process. would prefer that this become a recurring charity drive for the girin rather than permanent retirement though. overall comes across as well intentioned

okay fine last post i SWEAR then i'll slink back into my fetid little shipwreck. idk i know the userbase has had a history of getting rambunctious with it when anything concerning the site's history of racist and colonialist lore is brought up but good lord. my worst faith take on this is that i'm wondering how many people are reacting so negatively because it's an aapi charity in particular and there's some hidden biases that need to be unpacked, but realistically i know this isn't the case for the entire userbase + i'm pretty jumpy about asian/aapi issues on account of proximity. like i'd prefer a model where this kind of thing rolls back around every may , but man i think things are getting blown way out of proportion tbh

idk i tend to be pretty polite to people on the website, genuinely do not want to start beef with people, but i got my limits so here i am on tumblr dot com. if anyone has good faith questions feel free to roll into the inbox, i'm korean and i've (briefly) worked with local aapi nonprofits if that matters for anything lol. can't do you nothin if youre asking about the mythology behind it though, i'm more of a modern history guy sry
