every time you see a popular/privileged footballer with political common sense you should make a wish that shit is weirder than short period comets
you can argue with people on here who don't think the marvel movies are us military propaganda. you can log onto tumblr and debate people who think CAPTAIN AMERICA is a neutral action film where a poor catholic kid in 20th century america wants to be in the army soo bad but he doesn't meet the physical standards so he undergoes a top secret experiment to make him a "super soldier" who becomes a propaganda piece for the us military (like them carting him around and displaying him for the masses to build patriotism and boost morale is a plot point in the first movie) and fights the nazi enemy (no mention of their actual atrocities, it's because they experimented on american soldiers. yes the americans did that too) & then gets out of the ice and immediately starts working for what is essentially the cia. they think the iron man movie where tech genius billionaire (!) tony stark is kidnapped by a terrorist group (led by a man with an islamic name, dresses like a middle eastern resistance group) while demonstrating THE MISSILE HE BUILT FOR THE US MILITARY who after escaping ceases his weapons production because he was kidnapped & his friend died, not because he was BUILDING MISSILES to MURDER THE US' FOREIGN ENEMIES. even putting the contents of the movies aside, people will straightfaced say the franchise that pentagon reviews the scripts of to ensure "unfavourable portrayals of the us military are avoided", the franchise that collaborates with the us department of defense, the franchise that is allowed access to american military bases in exchange for writing about the army in a positive light, is a neutral one with no suspicious political motivation. like omg these movies said americans = good, non-americans = bad, west asians & russians = not people, and supposed politically educated tumblr users EAT IT UP. maybe jf you could engage with a film's themes beyond drawing two white guys kissing but... alas

"if hozier wanted me to understand what he was saying he would've enunciated" "tee hee i can't understand hozier's accent what's he even saying" not only do you dismiss his songs about civil rights movements, the effects of catholicism on ireland, colonisation & reproductive rights, you're doing it in the same way irish works have always been dismissed. you're targeting his accent. when you refuse to listen to the political messages because you can't understand his accent uwu you have to know what you're doing. when i was younger and wanted to make an important point or sound educated i'd put on an english affectation because i knew the accent i had wasn't a "serious" one. when the banshees of inisherin came out i watched it with my mother and cried, and then i watched the snl skit that depicted the irish actors as drunks with unintelligible accents. our accents don't exist in a vacuum! they come from our language! our language that was stamped out and systemically erased! i don't care i'm forever going to be ecstatic to hear irish accents in "serious" media & music. we don't have to adjust our accents to make ourselves more palatable to you. we don't have to anglicise our language to make you understand. you can google the lyrics. you can put on subtitles. i don't careee i want to hear my voice in critically acclaimed movies & grammy winning music & emmy nominated tv shows you can joke all you want but i watched handsome devil at least ten times when i was eleven because it was the first time i'd seen gay irish people on screen. it was the first time i'd seen (by my knowledge) gay irish people full stop. hashtag i love our accents they are so beautiful and wonderful and we have always had them and they are going to exist forever

btw i do think we should have more movies about lesbians who are fully realized complex characters who ultimately achieve happiness in ways they may not even necessarily deserve and get to ride into the sunset with their lover because lesbians deserve to know that a happy ending is possible despite how unrealistic it may seem and despite a world that doesn't understand or support them. and i think these movies should depict sex and fetish content because it's hot and because lesbians deserve to know that no matter how messy or "weird" their desire seems it's real and it's even worth celebrating. and if you don't agree. well. you should not be allowed to watch movies

for anyone who isn't aware, wnba players have been speaking out recently about the abuse they've been receiving online from sports betters who bet on them and weren't happy with the outcomes of the games. notably, chelsea gray blasted a guy who called her a racial slur because she didn't score as many points as he bet she would, and courtney williams posted a voice note of her response to a guy who said some absolutely vile stuff to her
i know most of the wnba fans on here are more casual watchers, but it's still something i think everyone who pays attention to the league should be aware of because it's astounding how many comments i've seen saying that the players should just suck it up because that comes with the territory and all athletes have to deal with it. while it's true that this problem is by no means unique to the wnba, that doesn't mean it's okay or that players should have to tolerate harassment and bigotry (i swear every single one of these comments is overtly racist, misogynistic, and/or homophobic)
if the league is going to openly endorse sports betting, partner with betting platforms, and actively promote betting during every single commercial break, then it NEEDS to also take measures to protect its players from the vitriol that betting inspires. personally i think it's incredibly fucked up that sports leagues are endorsing betting at all, but that's a conversation for another day. natasha cloud said it well when she was interviewed about it: if the wnba wants to endorse betting for the sake of financial growth, fine, but that cannot come at the expense of the players, and cathy needs to step up and protect them (in this way and so many more). elizabeth williams (secretary of the players’ association) said that there’s a meeting scheduled to discuss the issue with cathy soon, but i honestly don’t know how much we can expect to come from it
