I began making color studies based on simple, colorful, spotlit still life in 1997, as a reaction to a rather traumatic series of events. Still life allows me to focus on the present at hand, hopefully without any psychic energy filtering into the painting. As it is, it’s dramatic - the lit tableau indoors, with a glowing night sea outside in the background of the painting.

This painting was begun in Dan Rice’s studio where a group of us painted on Friday Nights. At that time the left side was filled with a spiked sharp plant.
