I hate to inform you this, but 3k is on the really cheap side of costs. They had a decent insurance, not everyone does.

Hey, you know why people say healthcare in the US is broken? Look at something, down in the bottom left.

$13280.49.

That’s what’s the hospital is saying the cost for all services associated with this stay are.

It’s not $3K for the birth - it’s $13280.49.

But not really.

See, there’s a line that says “Payments & Adjustments: -$11653.97.”

That’s how much the insurance supposedly forked over, leaving the parents $1626.52 to pay out of pocket (probably including the $39.95 “hold your baby after birth” charge).

But, if you look more, that payment of $11653.97 is in two bits - the “Commercial Insurance Payment” of -$6067.15 and the “Contractual Allowance Adjustment” of -$5566.82… 

And do you know what the “Contractual Allowance Adjustment” is?

That’s the amount of the bill the hospital is writing off as a favor to the insurance company - the amount that they don’t care if they get paid for. Almost $5600 is just written off as a loss from the hospital to the insurance company - so that they can get paid almost $6100 from the insurance company and $1600 from the parents.

So the hospital really is saying “this procedure really costs around $7700 - if you have insurance.”

But if you don’t have insurance? They’re going to charge you the full $13280 - including the $40 for mom to hold the baby after it’s born.

And they will chase someone without insurance for EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR OF THAT $13280.49 - but if you have insurance, well, we can work something out so you don’t have to pay that $1600 at once… We’ll work out an installment plan, easy payments… But if you’re uninsured? Pay that now and forever, world without end…

That’s why people are saying healthcare is broken. Because even with insurance, the damned billing doesn’t make sense… If the hospital is willing to just say “hey, this $5600 doesn’t count,” why bother charging it in the first place…?

As a Scottish person living in England I feel this on a personal level, when people say shit like “well it’s not the genuine asylum seekers I’m bothered by, it’s the people who just move here to get a better job and take advantage of our welfare system” and I’m like “Mate, I literally moved 500 miles south to a different country just to get a better job and better weather, if you’re going to hate on anyone for that hate on me.” 

Then they try to back-track and say things like “Well you already speak perfect English so it’s fine” and I’m like “My grandma didn’t speak very good English when my grandparents settled in the UK from Finland, what are you trying to say?” 

And they’re like “Well I’m sure you’re grandparents had useful jobs and weren’t just sponging off the system.” like… nah, my grandma mended clothes and my grandad sold garden sheds, they weren’t exactly brain surgeons 

“But they…” just admit it, it’s not white immigrants that bother you, I doubt Americans go on marches protesting the Canadian undergrad students who overstay their visas or all the germans and scandinavians who just rocked up in the Midwest one day and decided to call it their own.

This was how I finally started to understand white privilege.
