#There was a sweet butch couple at our temple who I remember more vividly than any of my hebrew school teachers despite barely interacting #i remember asking my friends mom if they were sisters #since they were both white brunette ladies with short hair that spent a lot of time together (they didn't actually look alike)#i don't recall her exact response but i knew after they were a couple and there was no judgment attached #I'm glad I grew up in such a progressive temple #i didn't even know men could be rabbis until we went to an east coast family member's bar mitzvah

Put this picture in your pocket, next time you get into an argument with someone about 'useless' scientific studies, ask them "Do you think that we should give funding to study the mating habits of endangered iguanas in the Sonoran desert, or should we be funding cures for alzheimer's and diabetes?" and then when they say "Of course we should be using that money to fund cures!" you can whip out this picture and say "trick question, it's the same thing"

you can’t right all of the world’s wrongs, especially when people have different definitions of right and wrong, and you can’t fix everything. But you can do what you can with what you have. You’re trying, in your own circumstances. And we have to believe that matters a little so as not to grow desperate whenever we are bombarded with terrible world news. We might not have all the power in the world, but we are not powerless. And everyday we keep trying is another day we get to use a little bit of that power. You’re doing what you can with what you have. Please remember that.

I think that media literacy step one for any video is "why is a camera pointed at this?" If there's no obvious reason for a camera to be pointing that way all the time, someone filmed the video on purpose. We aren't a fly on the wall, we're a deliberate audience.

#one of the early things I learned in my film degree is that the camera is not objective #someone made choices about what to include and what to leave out #camera angles affect our perception (low looking high vs high looking low can make something feel imposing or small)#When I gave up on working in film I thought my minor was kind of a waste #but the media literacy it gave me is SO VALUABLE

assume it doesn’t know you (unless it’s actually a specific animal you’ve met) and that it’s normal for its species and would do whatever was natural for it. including being too giant for and destroying the room it’s in. as well as dying immediately if its environment can’t support its life
