Intersex Terminology Masterpost

Since we don’t have many terms, I decided to gather all the ones I had the energy for and compile them. Click the links to read more (pride flags too) and feel free to add on! 

General Terms

Intersex (Adj.) - A term to describe those who were born with a sex variation that led to having sex characteristics that aren’t traditionally male or female. Abbreviation is IS. Noun form is Intersexuality. Read more here.

Dyadic (Adj.) - A term meaning “of two” utilized by intersex people to describe people who are not IS. Noun form is Dyad(s). Other terms are perisex (coiner unknown at the moment), endosex, and juxtasex (both coined by IS people). There is no consensus on what to call non-intersex people, but I prefer dyadic (although some believe it reinforces the sex binary).

Variation - A term used to refer to the cause of someone’s intersexuality. It is to be used instead of condition/disorder/etc. There are 3 main types of IS variations - Chromosomal, Hormonal, and Gonadal. There are some variations listed on LGBTA Wikia, the main source for this masterpost.

DSD - An abbreviation meaning either “difference of sexual development” or “disorder of sexual development.” The latter should not be used, and Variation is to be used over DSD. (Link contains list of Variations)

Intersexism / Inter(sex)phobia - The discrimination, prejudice, dislike, and hatred of and towards IS people.

Dyadism - [TW] The belief that being Dyadic is normal, correct, the default, etc., and that IS people are unnatural, wrong, diseased/deformed, insignificant, etc. Can also be called Perisexism, Endosexism, or Juxtasexism.

Assignment Related [TW]

Sex Assignment - Different from gender assignment, sex assignment is the process by which a person’s “biological sex” is determined. Everyone is assigned a sex and gender at birth, and for intersex people, sex assignment can be complicated and traumatic (see; IGM and Forced/Coerced HRT).

AXAB - Assigned “X” At Birth. For IS people who did not have a sex assigned to them at birth. A similar term is UAB.

AIAB - Assigned Intersex At Birth. For IS people whose intersexuality was recognized at birth. May be used in place of/alongside “AXAB.”

IAFAB / IAMAB - “Intersex Assigned Female At Birth” and “Intersex Assigned Male At Birth.” 

CAFAB / CAMAB - “Coercively Assigned Female At Birth” and “Coercively Assigned Male At Birth.” These terms are not intersex exclusive, [TW] but in the IS community are sometimes used to describe people who underwent IGM or other medical methods of assignment.

IGM - [TW] Infant/Intersex Genital Mutilation. Used by IS people in reference to the surgical procedures used to alter intersex people’s genitalia/remove internal organs in order to assign or reassign our sex and/or gender.

Forced/Coerced HRT - [TW] Forced/Coerced “Hormone Replacement Treatment” is an experience that probably deserves its own name independent of HRT, however is called this due to lack of terminology. It refers to the hormones given w/o proper consent to IS people in order to make us appear dyadic. It also may be given as a result of IGM impairing or destroying organs responsible for the production of certain hormones.

Gender Identity

Intergender - A gender that is in some form linked to being intersex. Also known as Integender or Mera (Hydragea/Idra).

Inter-Aligned - A gender alignment for nonbinary IS people whose gender is aligned with being IS instead of or alongside being masc-aligned or fem-aligned.

Duogender - A gender that is a combination of male and female as a result one’s intersexuality.  It can be considered a specific inte®gender. A similar term is Trans-Intersexual. 

Ipsogender - A gender modality for IS people who identify as the gender they were assigned, and may or may not identify with being cisgender due to their experiences with intersexuality, dydaism, and/or cissexism. Coined by an IS sociologist! A similar term is Advenagender.

Ultergender - A gender modality for IS people who do not identify as the gender they were assigned, and due to their intersexuality may or may not identify with being transgender.

Transmascfem / Transfemmasc - A gender modality for people who are both transfeminine and transmasculine as a result of being UAB, AXAB, or intersex.

Exparfem - A gender modality for IS people who relate to transfemininity despite being AFAB. Coined by @/integender.

Exparmasc - A gender modality for IS people who relate to transmasculinity despite being AMAB. Coined by @/integender

Transition Related

XTF - A term for IS people who are transitioning femininely, regardless of whether they’re cis, trans, etc. Also can be used by transfeminine or exparfem IS people opposed to MTF. 

XTM - A term for IS people who are transitioning masculinely, regardless of whether they’re cis, trans, etc. Also can be used by transmasculine or exparmasc IS people opposed to FTM.

Culturally Exclusive Terms

Ay’lonit - A term from Jewish culture for AFAB individuals “who [have] not shown signs of typical female puberty” - “presumed infertile” and have masculine sex characteristics (Source). Historically a term to refer to intersex people, but in modern times is used by both trans and intersex Jews.

Saris - A term from Jewish culture for AMAB individuals “who has not shown signs of typical sexual maturity; a eunuch.” There are two types: Saris Chama and Saris Adam. (Source). Historically a term to refer to intersex people, but in modern times is used by both trans and intersex Jews. 

Androgynos - A term from Jewish culture for a person possessing both male and female sex characteristics. (Source). Historically a term to refer to intersex people, but in modern times is used by both trans and intersex Jews.

Tumtum - A term from Jewish culture for “a person of indeterminate gender; one whose genitals are obscured or not clearly male or female.” (Source). Historically a term to refer to intersex people, but in modern times is used by both trans and intersex Jews.

Kathoey - A term used by people in Thailand who in English may be described as transfeminine or intersex.

Let’s talk about gender neutral words in Dutch!

The reason I’m doing this is because in my opinion pronouns in languages other then English aren’t talked about enough, I know native English speakers don’t need to know this but I have seen that a LOT of languages don’t have gender neutral pronouns. And even if there are (often unofficially), the people who learn the language don’t learn about them and even native speakers are uneducated about gender neutral pronouns in their native language. So, for anyone who wants to learn, I’m going to talk about gender neutral words to use for non-binary people in my native language🇳🇱

So let’s start with pronouns. There are 3 options to use for gender neutral pronouns known to me. The first one is zij/hen; a literal translation of they/them. Note that these are painfully alike to zij/haar (she/her) pronouns. A way to fix this is to use hen/hun, which is not exactly grammatically correct but valid. the second one is het/hets, which is literally translated to it/its (SIDENOTE IT/ITS PRONOUNS ARE ALSO VALID IN ENGLISH). The last one is die/diens, literally translated to that/thats. The reason for these are that in Dutch, it is common to use that for a person as well, no matter if you know the gender or not and used for all genders.

Here’s some more vocabulary about how to call your non-binary in your life in Dutch:

Sibling: Brus; broer(brother) and zus(sister) together

Child: Kind (actual translation)

Parent: Ouder (actual translation)

Cousin: Nift; nicht(female) and neef(masculin) together

Grandparent: grootouder (actual translation)

Person: persoon (actual translation)

Partner: partner (actual translation)

As some of you might know my main/more informal page has been on the NOVA app, but recently it has been made public that the creator isn’t good to her workers and is a bad person. I’m not sure if it’s true and I’m keeping my account at least for a couple of days, so people from NOVA have time to move here. Hi guys, let’s talk about dysphoria!

Dysphoria is when a trans person feels discomfort or distress due to them being trans. There are three different types of dysphoria: Physical dyphoria, social dyphoria and dissociative dysphoria.

Physical dysphoria is the distress or discomfort about physical things to yourself. For example you are a trans man and feel uncomfortable about your high voice and chest. Or maybe you are a trans woman and don’t like your facial hair.

Social dysphoria is the distress or discomfort about not being seen as the right gender by others. So an enby person may feel uncomfortable after being called gendered pronouns or things like “girl” or “bro” because they are gendered.

Dissociative dysphoria is when you don’t recognize yourself because of feeling another gender then you have been physically born as. This also comes in the form of feeling like your mind is disconnected from your body. This doesn’t have to mean you see your body in a negative way when realizing what body you are really in.

Also, remember a person doesn’t need to experience dysphoria to be valid as trans. Dysphoria in transgender people is common, but it is possible to not experience it. You can for example be a trans man and be okay with your chest, or be non-binary and don’t feel the need to change anything about yourself. That’s why it’s fine for trans folk to not transition or transition in a diffrent way.

Hi guys, let’s talk sexualities!

These tree flags resemble polysexual, polyamory, and cupiosexual! I’m gonna explain to you what these sexualities mean.

Polysexual is when you like multiple genders, but not all, for example you like females and genderqueers, but not males. This is often mistaken for bisexual, but the diffrence is that bisexual people like the two binary genders (male and female) but this is not the case with polysexuals

Polyamory is when a person has the ability to fall in love with more then one person, but it can also be a relationship status. A polyamory relationship is a romantic or sexual relationship with more than 2 people in it. Being in a polyamory relationship does not mean someone is cheating, because all people in the relationship are aware of being with multiple people.

Cupiosexual is when a person does not experience sexual attraction, but does experience the need to be in a sexual relationship. So a person is not sexually (maybe just romantically) attracted to a person, but does feel the need to have a sexual relationship with them.

Hi guys, let’s talk sexuality’s! These flags are from top to bottom abrosexual, sapiosexual, and coeosexual. So I’m gonna explain to you what these sexuality’s all mean.

Abrosexuality is when someone’s sexuality is fluid, so when their sexuality changes all the time. One day you can be heterosexual, and the other day bisexual for example.

Sapiosexual is when you are attracted to someone’s intelligence instead of their body and looks. It’s very often combined with asexual, but it doesn’t have to be. Sapiosexual people can still be in healthy relationships regardless of their sapiosexuality

Coeosexuality is when a person only develops sexual and/or romantic attraction the first time they meet. So they only fall in love when it’s “love at first sight”, and never develop feelings after meeting people after a while.

Hi guys, let’s talk sexuality’s! These three flags are from top to bottom trixic, toric and skoliosexual. I’m gonna explain to you guys the meaning of these labels

Trixic is when any genderqueer person is attracted to girls. This label can apply to anyone who doesn’t identify fully female or fully male.

Toric is the opposite, so when any genderqueer person is attracted to boys.

Skoliosexual are people who are attracted to genderqueer people. They can be attracted to a non-binary person or an agender person, or any gender other than the two gender-binary genders (man and woman).

Let’s talk gender identities! These flags are from top to bottom demigirl, demiboy, demiagender and demigender. Again, I’m gonna explain to you what these terms mean.

A demigirl is a person who only partially identifies as a girl, and only feel partially feminine. They sometimes put a label on what their other half of their identity is, but this doesn’t have to be. The same goes for demiboy, but obviously with boys and masculinity.

Demiagender is a person who only partially identifies as agender. They also can sometimes name their other half of their identity, and can also feel either slightly feminine or masculine, or just that some other half of their identity has a gender, just not name it.

Demigender is an umbrellaterm for people that are any kind of demi-gender. Part of this are the genders described above but also demibigender, demifluid, demiflux or demiangrogyne, which I will most likely explain in a future post.

Let’s stalk gender identities! These 3 flags are from top to bottom non-binary, agender and genderqueer. I’m gonna explain these 3 gender identities and explain the diffrence.

A non-binary or enby person is a person who identifies as neither male or female, and feel like they are a gender in the middle of that. The pronouns a non-binary can use are they/them.

Agender is when a person who feels like they are no gender. This is often confused with non-binary because they are both androgynous genders, but they are diffrent becaus non-binaries do think they are a gender.

Genderqueer is an umbrella term for people who are neither male or female. Genderfluid, or a combination of genders are also part of this. People can also just call themselves genderqueer when they don’t know where or how to place their gender identity, or because they are confused about their gender.

Let’s talk sexuality’s!

These flags are from top to bottom aromantic, grayrantic and demiromantic. I’m gonna explain to you what they are and their diffrences.

An aromantic is a person who experiences no romantic attraction ever. They can, however experience any attraction that society doesn’t label as romantic, and have healthy relationships. That’s why it’a combined with any other sexuality.

Grayromantic is when a person experiences a little of what society labels romantic attraction. This can mean they only sometimes experience it or that they just lack the amount. Grayromantic people can also fall in love in other ways and have healthy relationships

Demiromantic is when a person only experiences romantic attraction when a strong emotional bond has been made. They need to really know a person well and have a special bond before they can feel romantic attraction. Demiromantic people can obviously have healthy relationships, it doesn’t matter if it is after the emotional bond has been made or before.

Let’s talk sexuality’s! These flags are from top to bottom bisexual, pansexual and omnisexual. Yet again I’m gonna explain to you these sexuality’s and their diffrences

Bisexual is when a person likes men and women. They can have preferences, for example a girl can like 99% women and only 1% men. This still counts as bisexuality. Bisexuals feel no need to be with both at a same time and can have healthy realationships without desiring to also be with the opposite gender.

A pansexual is someone who doesn’t care about gender when it comes to who they love. They see no boundaries in what gender they wouldn’t want to date and which they would. Pansexuals don’t look at gender first in a person, so they don’t have preferences.

Omnisexual is when a person likes all genders, just like pansexual, only omnisexuals do look at gender in a person and can have preferences. Omnisexuals can, just like bisexuals, still date a person without desiring to also be with any other gender.

Let’s talk Japanese substyles!

The first picture is an example of sweet Lolita style. This is part of the Lolita subculture and the most child-like and the most popular Lolita style. This style is base on looking cute and girly and follows the basic Lolita silhouette, which is created by wearing bell skirts. Bows are often worn in the hair of a person dressing in this style, and thighs are also commonly worn.

The second picture is an example of gothic Lolita style. This is also part of the Lolita subculture and darker hues and bell skirts are some of the core characteristics, as are bows. The bell skirt is used to create a more elegant look. Crosses, bats, coffins and skulls are also returning objects in Gothic Lolita style. Platform shoes and heels are also common in goth Lolita, usually in black or any other dark color. Gothic Lolita folk often don’t white powder their face, like normal gothics, because it is seen as too over the top.

Visual kei style is a style that is based on music, as it began with Japanese musicians. It’s also a music style. A lot of visual kei people wear piercings and often dress either feminine or androgynous. They also wear over the top make-up and quircky hairstyles. Dressing visual kei is also seen as a way of expressing yourself through creativity and art and embracing who you really are inside.

Let’s talk Japanese Harajuku Fashion! Harajuku style has existed since the 1980’s and it became know in western culture in the 2000’s. At first Harajuku fashion was mainly mixing traditional Japanese wear with the western. Young people used this style to give a message: they don’t give a damn about wearing normal chlothes and they can dress as they want. It is a movement against strict social rules and the pressure to fit in in Japan. That’s why it’s totally okay in Harajuku fashion to “not dress your age” and there are barely any rules, as long as you’re having fun! There are a lot of sub-styles in Harajuku wear, which I will discuss in other posts.
