I posted something like this on my blog and was wondering what you thought on it. The full thing wouldn’t fit on the ask, but you can see it on my blog. The problem was originally that people thought that being LGBTQ+ was a sin, but now everyone thinks its a trend. Being LGBTQ+is not liking the idea of being LGBTQ+, Its feeling you are.

I understand exactly what you mean and this upsets me so much. I honestly couldn’t tell you why being LGBTQ+ suddenly became a “trend.” Maybe it’s because they want to feel unique and different, or they think being apart of the community makes you quirky and special. I really don’t know and it really sucks for real LGBTQ+ people who still go through so much discrimination and internal tourment everyday because they are who they are. This trend could worsen a situation of a LGBTQ+ person; their environment could be led to believe they’re just following a trend, that they’ll grow out of it and that’s someting so important trenders don’t see, or choose not to. The impact of their actions lead to the invalidation of so many LGBTQ+ members. The most important thing to understand it that sexuality and gender are NOT a choice. It’s not just finding someone pretty, it’s feeling a certain type of attraction to them; it’s not just wanting to be another gender because it would be cool or easier, it’s dysphoria.

Real conversation between me (f) and my 7 year old cousin (f):

Cousin: do you have a boyfriend?

Me: No, do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend?

Cousin: girlfriend?

Me: yeah! Girls can have girlfriends and boys can have boyfriends

Cousin: oh thats cool! I don’t have either

This just shows how quick and easy it is to explain to a child that gay people exist. It isn’t uncomfortable or “bad” unless you make it that way

i hope the younger lgbt+ youth (12-16) on here knows that it’s okay to play with identities. it’s okay to try out a label for a month, decided it’s not for you, and then pick up another one. you aren’t “betraying your community”, you’re figuring yourself out at an age that- you know- you figure yourself out in! do what works for you. if you don’t like labels, ditch them! if a label resonates with you deeply, try playing around with it! it’s normal. don’t be afraid.
