The potential for creating empathy around issues greatly affecting our youth excited me and motivated me as we moved forward. So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections – whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status. My intention in creating this project – which could be a series of videos down the road – is not only to educate and create healthy, productive and healing civic dialogue and safe spaces, but it is also to create empathy. It’s to create empathy for our youth in a world that is sorely lacking it. (x)

Sara Ramirez came out as bisexual while giving a speech at the 40 to None Summit on Saturday morning (October 8) in Los Angeles.

The 41-year-old Grey’s Anatomy actress, who is married to husband Ryan DeBolt, shared her truth in her speech.

“So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections – whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” Sara said. “And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican & Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”

On Grey’s, Sara played the role of Dr. Callie Thorne, who also identifies as bisexual.
