Okay bear with me, Stede is dead now, so he needs a disguise and he thinks of Jim and he’s like "Ehy, they wore a fake beard for quite a while and it made for a pretty nice disguise. Perhaps I could give it try." So he gets one, puts it on and nobody recognizes him. He goes by the name Captain Edwards.

When he finally meets Ed, Ed doesn't recognise him straight away and it goes like:

"You're captain Edwards I presume"
