With their bag slung over their shoulder, Lian had hastily wrapped her jacket around her, trying to hide the maid costume she had to wear for work. Normally they finished work with enough time that they wouldn’t miss the weekly potions class that were held. She was still trying to get comfortable in the coven but there were a few kind mages had taken her under their wing.
Life hadn’t given them many chances to refine their powers but since moving to the city, Liam had taken an active interest in progressing. Glancing at her watch, she decided that there wasn’t time to walk there and a taxi was her best bet. Hurrying down the street, she almost ran directly into a man who was standing in the middle of the path.
As much as she wanted to complain, his apology put a stop to it. “It’s quite alright, I’m just trying to get a taxi,” they explained, looking up the street. Nothing yet but surely something would come past. “Are you waiting for someone?” she asked.
…
They were quite beautiful, he made immediate note of that. Perhaps even more beautiful than the girl that had caught his attention before. “At this hour?” he questioned with a raise of his brow, before he looked down to his watch. “It may take a little while.” He thought for a moment before he gave a shrug. “How important is your appointment?”
He was not an exceptionally kind person, despite the initials behind his name, but he had a habit for liking to get closer to those that were of interest to him. “I’m about to leave, myself. I could spare a couple of miles.”
-
Lian frowned and looked down at her phone. "Damn, it's later than I thought," they admitted. It wasn't going to be easy to get a taxi but she had to hope where someone would come by and stop. Her eyes dragged up and down the street, hoping to see a light in the distance but there was nothing. "I think it would depend on your idea of important. It's important to me. I have a late class that I'm meant to attend."
She was cursing to herself, she had missed a few lessons already. At some point they were going to stop letting them participate. "Are you sure?" they asked, looking up at the man. There was something ringing in the back of her head about accepting lifts from strangers but isn't that what a taxi was? "If you could spare the time, I'd really appreciate it."

The mage knew they should be more cautious around Chthonic’s. There was nothing saying they were bad people, at least not in theory and not based on their species. In her experiences with Jing Lei, he had never given her a reason to not feel comfortable around him. Besides, on a hellish day like this, they would take any seat they could get at the Grill.
Slipping into the open seat opposite him, they placed down their food and got it organised. “Well I appreciate it because it was either this or eat it on the sidewalk,” she commented, giving him a warm smile. “It’s been busy… so busy that I didn’t realise it was dinner time. How about you, Jimmy?”
“No problem. I prefer eating with people than without. Makes food more enjoyable if you eat with others.” He took a bite of his wrap and some of the sweet potato fries, only continuing once he was done chewing.
“Busy myself. Lots of highschool biology papers to grade. Didn’t get out until later than I usually do. Would’ve gone home and made some Laksa or Bak Chor Mee if I’d felt like making a grocery run. But at least I don’t have to take work home with me tonight. Other than busy, how’s yours been?”
-
"Agreed. I miss hawker markets," they admitted. At least when you had so many food stalls around, everyone just ate where there was a free seat available. Still, the city had plenty of other things to love and enjoy. In the pause between them, Lian took a few bites of her wrap. "I can imagine that is riveting," she chuckled. Lian couldn't remember a thing about biology though they might have paid better attention of someone like Jing Lei was teaching.
"I bet your students pay attention though, unlike me in high school." Maybe if they had, they wouldn't working as a dress up maid but that's just how life went sometimes. She hummed in agreement, wishing they had time to cook like that at home. "I just finished up for the day so I thought I'd grab something on the way home. I try and cook normally but you know how it is, some times you just don't have the energy."
"I really need to use a bag next time like Uncle told me..." She muttered, staring at the books on the ground. The man handling her estate was not her family and yet was her family all at the same time. She'd taken to calling him uncle and referring to him a such when she talked to other people so it didn't raise too many questions about why she would have a handler at her age.
"I'm...I'm fine," she said, her anger dissipating at the other woman's concern. It hadn't occurred to her to ask if she was alright or not until she had been asked. "Are you alright?" She asked tentatively, canting her head to the side for a moment. She took the books from her gratefully. "Thanks." She offered. "Hopefully none are scuffed too bad...the library wouldn't be very grateful if I ruined some of their important books."
-
"Your uncle might be right," they replied. Lian didn't want to sound rude but it was a good suggestion. With a quick inspection, they could see that the woman was unharmed, it was just the books that had scattered. Lian helped collect them, adding back to the pile. "I'm perfectly okay, it was just a surprise," she said, chuckling. The incident could have been way worse, the only thing hurt might have been a book.
"Oh here, let me..." Lian's sentence trailed off as she began digging through her bag, searching for something. After a few moments, she pulled out a canvas bag that they often used for grocery shopping. "You can have this, if you like?" they offered, holding it out. "It might not fit everything but you won't have to balance all the books," they explained. If she was worried about the ruining the books, Lian could assist with that.
So weak… so pathetic. Humans were breakable creatures… wolves, too. Wolves though, they were as good as they were going to get. humans could be something better, if they were so lucky enough. If the processes didn’t kill them, at least. They had potential. It hadn’t killed him, after all. All of the screaming, all of the pain… it made him something better… Something darkly beautiful.
The girl he was watching was human. Hehad to remind himself to keep calm. They were still in the City… he couldn’t test her yet. Damn. He would have to keep a closer eye on her and catch her outside of the city… Track her on a vacation that she likely wouldn’t return from…
He heard someone near him, and the good physician looked over with a small smile. “My apologies. Am I in your way?”

On a good day, Lian loved the city with their whole heart. The people, the magic, the communities that were around the other supernaturals was something unlike anywhere else they’d lived before, or unlike anywhere their family had lived before. Today was not one of those days. Everything had gone wrong and now they were getting lunch way late and there were no tables to sit. It was one of those days where they were ready to give up until someone spoke.
“Oh, you don’t mind do you?” they asked, hesitating by the table. “I didn’t think it would still be this busy.”
Jing Lei didn’t fit the usual bill for a chthonic on the surface. He was very friendly and sunny in demeanor. Many of the usual characteristics you’d expect were muted. It didn’t mean he didn’t have the capacity for negative emotions and traits generally associated with his kind. He did have them, he just chose to be civil and jovial because it was easier to get what he wanted. Attention and adoration were so much easier to acquire for yourself if you showed your good side to people. After all, while he wasn’t violent or cruel, he was still ultimately selfish, devious, and greedy. Whether that be with people, fame, or material gain.
The chthonic gave the mage a smile and pointed to the seat across from him. “I wouldn’t be offering to share my table if I minded, Lian. It’s the dinner rush and Covaire Grill is popular. How’s your day been.”

Nore walked through the park with her arms full of books, trying to make her way home. Her shift at the library had ended about 10 minutes earlier and she'd spent most of her shift either restocking or looking through books for herself. She felt like she had so much to catch up on in the world and what better way to do it than by reading as much as she could. Even in her life before she'd loved reading and was glad to discover it was still a past time she enjoyed all these years later. Some were nonfiction about the world at large, some were books that patrons had told her were must reads.
She found herself looking up at the trees as she walked, taking in the greenery and the peaceful surroundings. Sometimes it was nice to get a break from all the noise. But she must have been looking up for too long because she crashed into someone, her books flying through the air at all angles. She gasped, anger taking over as she stared at the mess before her. Her brows furrowed, her eyes squinted and her lips pursed, she looked up at the person before her.
"Well....great."

Lian had finished up work for the day and decided to take a scenic route on the way home. After spending all day inside, it was good to get outside and enjoy fresh air and nature. It felt unnatural to be cooped up all day but such was life when you needed to make money. They hadn't gotten that far before someone stepped into their path.
Books went flying, far more than they expected someone to be carrying. "Are you alright?" they asked, looking between the woman and scattered books. In Lian's defense, the woman hadn't been paying attention and had walked straight into them but they were in a good mood that day.
Kneeling down, Lian collected a few of the scattered books before standing again, holding them out to the woman. "Here."

Jing Lei was taking some time to get something at Covaire Grill, a usual stop for him after he was done with grading his classes’ biology papers. The chthonic would otherwise have gone to Veggie Roofs to get ingredients for some more traditional Singaporean cuisine. But he didn’t feel like cooking today, and JJ and her staff made good food. He was currently tucking into a chicken wrap with a side of sweet potato fries when someone grabbed his attention.
“Don’t just stand there. There’s plenty of room at this table.”
