Reminder that:

The Christianization of Europe and the witch hunts are two completely separate things.

The witch hunts took place in the early modern period, well after Europe was Christianized.

The witch hunts were driven by conspiracy theories. It's literally a predecessor of QAnon.

Many conspiracy theories of the witch hunts were repurposed antisemitic conspiracy theories. (For example, blood libel and Satan worship.)

Lots of Christians practiced folk magic. They didn't usually call themselves witches.

Witchcraft was associated with polytheistic religions by Christians. Polytheists didn't call themselves witches. Whatever they were doing, they had their own words for it.

Modern witchcraft is a modern construct. It is not a revival of a genuine pre-Christian tradition of any kind.

Modern witchcraft cannot be "colonized" because it's literally a modern creation made by white people. However, modern witches are capable of doing colonialism, such as when they promote pseudohistory about other cultures.

Table for Libation or Offerings

Sculpted from single block of alabaster, this altar was used either as a sacrificial altar or a libation table. It is decorated with the forms of two lions, whose front and back paws are beautifully defined.

The altar slopes downward towards a circular basin, around which the tails of the lions are curled. Magical offering formulas and prayers were recited when libations like water, milk, beer or wine were poured over the altar.

The liquids were then collected in the basin and presented to the gods or to the Ka of the deceased. The same magical and sacred formulas were required during sacrificial rites performed on the altar, and in this case, the blood of the sacrificial animal was collected in the basin.

Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College

For anyone unfamiliar with Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the entire thesis is that traditional educational models promote oppression by removing students' agency in their own learning. Freire argues that currently education functions as a "banking model" - teachers are the holders of knowledge, and students are empty vessels, waiting to have that knowledge put into their heads like a piggy bank. This reinforces a passive attitude towards information, not seeking and understanding it on your own terms, but waiting for a "banker" to deposit it into your head.

Instead, Freire proposes that teachers and students act as co-creators of knowledge, where students become active participants in their own learning through questions and dialogue. Teachers are also open to changing their understanding of topics in the process of critical dialogue - the goal is not "student learns Fact A and memorizes it as presented," but instead the goal is the knowledge itself, discovered collaboratively by teacher and student, who are acting with empathy and respect towards each other. This also starts the process of the oppressed being able and empowered to question structures of power, take agency, and actively participate in the transformation of society.

So, the irony of writing an AI essay on critical pedagogy is actually insane; because it's essentially the extrapolated endpoint of Freire's arguments that our current educational system creates passive receptacles who not only can't think critically in an educational context, but also become the perfect citizens for a world that doesn't want us questioning structures of power, to view those in power as we viewed our teachers - deliverers of indisputable facts that must be memorized and regurgitated because they command it, and not co-creators of true understanding.

We find the gods in the external world because we have placed them there. By doing so, we are telling them, "I want to find a home for you in my life." Even if we accept the existence of all gods, we deliberately choose to animate the world with the ones who resonate most closely with us. We could choose to see Geb in the earth instead of Gaia, for example, or Inanna in the expression of love instead of Aphrodite. It's completely up to us, and our unique perspectives allow us to form deeper bonds with the deities we worship. By instantiating them into the world, the gods come alive through us.
