Just so the fucking writers know,

Nobody wanted to see a pathetic, codependent Crowley.

Not the fandom who are heavily in favor of Crowley. Not in the book. Not in S1. Not in S2. Nobody wanted to see a pathetic Crowley who looked like he was begging his way to love in S3. Not even the Crowley criticals or Aziraphale lovers.

Why?

Because everyone sees them as equals. They wanted to see the both of them find ways to be able to manuever the 2nd Coming. Overcome their misconceptions. Find their way towards each other like they always do.

Nobody wanted a sad looking husk of a demon that couldn't even have the courage to stay at the bookshop nor understand why Aziraphale left. It is understandable for there to be anger, resentment, and even a bit of grudge. However, these are two beings who had been around each other's side for 6000 years.

How fucking dare you turn them into these puppets for your entertainment?

That abhorrent miscommunication and misunderstanding trope you abused too much was distasteful to his character. It did not serve a good plot device when Crowley was literally known to be an optimist and quite intelligent even if he and Aziraphale are stupid together?

Any being in love would be stupid with each other for the love of the game.

In the 4 fucking years that Aziraphale was gone, he'd have moved on within the first year and actually find a way to help Aziraphale because he undersrood. I can sure bet that Aziraphale would find a way to communicate Crowley, like idk, the rats perhaps?

So how fucking dare you make Crowley into this caricature of human depression that seems to be the stereotype of what people think depression looks like in general? You could've done better in representating it, instead, you are probably stigmatizing depression even more for other people.

I like him as any other character, but you cannot tell me that not all of you managed to think what message it would be to send a depressed, gambling addicted, homeless, codependent, suicidal person to kill themselves due to them thinking they have a flaw is?

This could've been any of your chance to show how to overcome misunderstandings and show how to actually stand against authority. You gave us nothing but drama until the very fucking end, and the message that authorities would always end up winning and that dying is the only way to "resolve" everything. Fuck that and fuck you. S3 will never be fucking canon to me, you fucking lobotomizers.

Not only did you motherfuckers hate Aziraphale, you're turning Crowley pathetic when he didn't have to be is a fucking fetish at some point. Tell me, did it somehow scratch an itch to read a character, that the fandom loves so much, say those dialogue to you?

Istg, there were many layers in S3, and those layers were full of fucking hatred for a character with hope and desparation and fetish for a known optimistic character to be codependent, pathetic, and angry.

Aziraphale deserved to be shown he is loved, just as Crowley deserved to be a stand-in-his-own-two-feet character.

Let Crowley be naughty again. I love secretly soft, not-actually-that-bad Crowley as much as the next person, but demons are demons. He likes being a little mischievous. Season 3 wants to say that Crowley realized something was wrong when Azi was talking like this:

One thing I noticed on my latest rewatch about Aziraphale during the end credits.

At first, his expression reminds me of the look on his face after Crowley pulled away, when Aziraphale was trying to hold back his tears.

Then his eyes suddenly widen, as if he's just seen something horrifying. I think it reads as fear, since his eyebrows are lowered and his lips are pressed tightly together.

He's breathing heavily

Then, at around the 23–24 second mark, he starts trying to suppress a smile. You can see it for the rest of the sequence.

He looks at the Metatron a few seconds before giving that same mysterious smile. The one which true meaning we'll probably never know.

My point is, he didn't suddenly start smiling. He was suppressing that smile for about half of the time he's on screen in the elevator.

Aziraphale is the most character ever. He ran out of ideas so he declared war on hell. He canonically says fuck. His favourite colour is yellow. He’s literally an angel and can speak every language on earth but still isn’t fluent in french. He told his boyfriend to shoot him for his magic act and made him go through with it when their miracles weren’t working. He gave away his flaming sword and then lied about it for the next 6000 years. He has a bookshop that never sells books. No one’s doing it like him.

Because of who I am as a person, I can’t stop noodling about what the Good Omens Finale was actually trying to do. Temporarily setting aside whether I liked it (I did not) — what was it trying to do? What was the writers’ logic and thought process in the decisions they made?

Okay, let’s work backwards from the dramatic climax, and see if we can follow the critical plot path. What had to happen so that the climax could happen?…

Aziraphale and Crowley sacrifice their existence, because apparently that’s a necessary condition to create a world without God judging people for their choices, which seems to be Crowley’s definition of “real free will.” (This condition has never been so much as hinted at before, but okay, sure. For the sake of argument, let’s accept it.)

Aziraphale and Crowley have to be able to summon God using the Book of Life so that they can negotiate their sacrifice.

Michael’s Book of Life rampage has to happen, so that Aziraphale and Crowley have a reason to summon God.

Aziraphale and Crowley have to be together when Michael’s Book of Life rampage happens, so that they can negotiate the sacrifice together.

Aziraphale has to come back to Earth so he and Crowley can be together when the Book of Life rampage happens.

Heaven has to lose Jesus so that Aziraphale can have a reason to come back to Earth.

The Second Coming has to be planned so that Heaven can lose Jesus.

Aziraphale has to go back to Heaven to plan the Second Coming because ???

This is where working backwards falls apart for me. If the ultimate goal was to get A & C together in the same place for the climactic Book of Life destruction… they were already in the same place at the end of S1. Why did they need to be separated and then brought back together?

Ordinarily, I’d think it was done to ramp up the emotional stakes for the poignant climax. You know, give them a happy reunion, really give them hope, so that the sacrifice hits that much harder.

But the reunion isn’t written as happy at all — it’s bitter and angry and cold. If anything, it lowers the emotional stakes for the sacrifice, because their getting back together already feels hopeless.

So, narratively, what was the breakup and reunion for?

Maybe there’s an argument that Michael losing out on the Supreme Archangel promotion is what set off the Book of Life rampage? So Aziraphale had to get the promotion? And the breakup was just a side effect of that?

This gets hazy. Was that actually what set Michael off? And why was Aziraphale’s promotion needed for that to happen, as opposed to someone else’s?

All I can come up with is that the entire F15 breakup existed so that the ultimate sacrifice scene — where Crowley sacrifices their chance at happiness for the greater good of humanity — could be a callback to an earlier scene where Aziraphale had been the one wanting to make that sacrifice.

Something something, Aziraphale is foolishly willing to sacrifice their happiness for a pointless reason, all in the name of being “good” and “angelic,” but in the end we get the ✨ ironic twist ✨: Crowley the demon is the truly good and truly angelic one, because he’s the one willing to sacrifice their happiness when it really helps humanity.

I don’t like it. But setting that aside, it’s all I can come up with for what the thought process might have been.

Temporarily accepting for the sake of argument that Aziraphale had to go back to Heaven, we can start working backwards through S2:

Gabriel has to run away with Beelzebub so that Aziraphale can get promoted so that Aziraphale can go back to Heaven

Gabriel has to lose and regain his memory before running away with Beelzebub so that ???

It’s unclear what any of that Gabriel amnesia plot was needed to set up.

Why not replace the whole “hiding amnesiac Gabriel from Heaven and Hell” plot in S2 with a “hiding Jesus from Heaven and Hell” plot? Then A & C are together when they need to be. It also gives them the realization that their happiness can never really be safe while Heaven and Hell still exist, because they’ll always be dragged back into the power struggle. They realize that all of humanity is in the same boat. That no one can ever truly be free. That sets up a motivation for their sacrifice.

I still don’t like this storyline. I would still argue that Aziraphale and Crowley would never give up on their universe. That thematically, the whole idea of “sacrifice themselves to create a new universe” contradicts the book/S1.

To me, the ultimate thesis of the book and of S1 is that humanity has the power to save itself. That humanity’s real power lies in imagination, empathy, self-determination, love and friendship and family, and making our own meaning out of everyday joys. That this power is stronger than any god, if we only choose to claim it.

Aziraphale and Crowley sacrificing themselves, erasing their whole universe to get God to start over with a new one, making that decision for humanity… because humanity is helpless and hopeless in the face of God’s ineffable game, so helpless that humanity has already been destroyed … it contradicts everything I understood and loved about Good Omens.

But if S3 insisted upon a “noble sacrifice to erase everything and start over” storyline, at the very least it could have been coherent about it.

What the shit was up with their lack of communication? One moment we're getting vindication that Aziraphale didn't leave for "just is" reasons. Next we see him acting like he's above forgiveness. That Aziraphale??? The Aziraphale that's quirky, kind, sarcastic, easily interested, greatly loving his tight assed demon boy acting like he's above forgiveness? The same angel that somehow forgave fucking Michael, suddenly acts like he's not one to earn forgiveness but to demand it?

Fucking excuse me?! Who the fuck are you wearing that angel's face? You're a lot of things but you're not the Aziraphale we know of. Also, what the fuck was up with the fuckass "Did I say the wrong thing?" and you didn't even make him have a fucking point to add. This is the angel that literally played with technicalities against the big shots and suddenly he's fucking mute against NONEXISTENCE???? HELLO??? Have we not seen the same angel go against armaggedon TWICE and now he's suddenly 'uwu, can't say shit to my bb' the same angel who told Crowley to try and find something???

Also, Anthony "I do not care for it" J. Crowley suddenly not seeing Aziraphale's something's wrong voice during that fucking question??? What the fuck are you even? Who the fuck are any of you??? You mope for 4 fucking years like your dumbass didn't sleep for a fucking century and suddenly you ran out of creativity with solutions??? Where was the least way of defending Aziraphale knowing how much Heaven was shit and yet allowed God to talk smack? Or at least your version of fighting back, too? Also, lost miracles. What kind of stupid made that a plotline?

Where was your strength? Your dumbass faced Hell itself for eons and suddenly Aziraphale leaving made you lose autonomy? This some bullshit ISTG. I know your dumbass would miss Aziraphale but you were able to at least fucking fight your way out most of your problems. Your optimism. Creativity. Innovation.

This is either some nightmare or somewhere along Season 2, Aziraphale escaped Heaven with Crowley. Took their shit out of that universe and Heaven and Hell replaced them with caricatures of themselves because they were not it. It wasn't them.

Fanfic authors do their best to do their goddamn homework to be as accurate as possible and we got fucking professionals not doing the most basic of all shit in writing.

Did the writers of GOS3 forget that the reason queer people enjoy fantasy is to escape to a world where we don’t have to deal with all the shit we do and retreat into a world of something bigger. Especially a fantasy like good omens where every single person is unapologetically queer without need for explanation. Yeah go ahead and destroy that universe, have the characters kill themselves for our universe, which is supposed to be so much better?

Sadly, the bad writing started at the end of season 2, not in the finale/'season 3'.

We knew, deep down, that Aziraphale was OOC when he asked Crowley to go to heaven with him. That's why we had a lot of theories and we were waiting for season 3 to confirm any of it. There was no way that Aziraphale could think that The Metatron 'wasn't so bad'. There was no way that he could said that heaven was 'the side of light/truth' when they had punched him and afterwards tried to kill him, and kill humanity. There was no way he could think Crowley would want to go back to heaven as an angel.

I never believed the coffee theory, of course, but the scene was so OOC that I thought it was some kind of performance for the Metatron. I trusted it would be explained.

And the OOC is more than the final 15'. Michael was threating Aziraphale to erase him from The Book of Life and Crowley didn't even flinch? Comfortable much in Aziraphale's couch? The same protective demon that almost made Jim jump out a window because he threatened Aziraphale before? I also thought that he knew something about The Book of Life, like he had it hidden or something. He goes from 'extreme sanctions don't exist' to really worried about Aziraphale being erased in the first part of season 2, to no worried at all in the last episode, to 'I know everything about the book of life' in the Finale. It's bonkers.

Another thing the finale gets wrong is the exaggeration of how much Crowley and Aziraphale want to save humanity. They want to save the world. They want to save the things humans have made more than they want to save humans themselves. Restaurants, fruity little cocktails, museums, books, all of that. Saving humanity is just a bonus that comes with it. They do love humans, and are fascinated by them, but they wouldn't sacrifice themselves for the species while erasing what they previously fought for, all their inventions, and habits that built up over time. The finale ties those 2 ideas of humanity and the world too closely, as if they're the same thing, but in Good Omens, they're much more separate ideas.

Imagine that they're still in s1 or in s2 (depending on what did you see in the f15), waiting for us to write them the ending they truly deserved. Get your pens right now, we can't let them down!

It's an odd choice to put Asa and Anthony things on the Aziracrow bench when they have absolutely no way of knowing what that bench represents. If you really wanted to honor Asanthony properly, you'd take the bench, feed it into a wood chipper, replace it with a new bench that looks kind of similar to the old one but obviously isn't the same bench, and then pretend the original bench never existed.
