Liberate is a Guernsey registered charity established in 2014 to reform inequality and to include, inform and support the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) community in the Channel Islands.

Straightwashing in the media

“According to a 2011 Williams Institute report, researchers found that about half of the LGBT community identifies as bisexual. Things have been crazy here preparing for Channel Islands Pride! The banner (pictured) went up in St Peter Port this morning & rainbow flags are beginning to appear all over Town. There’s under two weeks until Guernsey’s first ever Pride and we cannot wait! Tickets to the various Pride events are below:

CI Pride 2016 - Guernsey Parade & Party - this is a free event, but if you go to the ticket link and confirm your attendance you will be rewarded with a 'buy one get one free' drink voucher for Market Square

Channel Islands Pride 2016 - Guernsey: Official Afterparty is only £6 and is going to be AMAZING! We are turning Urban Kitchen into Guernsey's very own gay club. So make sure you book this one as £10 tickets on the door will be limited to 50 people.

We don't know about you but we are going to need the CI Pride Guernsey 2016 - Recovery Brunch the morning after - Call Urban Kitchen to book (just mention it’s for the CI Pride brunch and they will reserve you a table).

And finally during the week between the Guernsey and Jersey events we have two cinema nights for you to enjoy: Wednesday - CI Pride Movie Night - 52 Tuesdays Thursday - CI Pride Movie Night - Cabaret

CI Pride week officially starts on Saturday 10th September - but we have an extra special pre-party on Friday 9th! Kitty Brucknell performed a Broadway medley in her first act at this year's Exhibitionist Ball and was so good that we've decided to bring her back for a full night of Broadway songs. Tickets are limited so make sure you get yours before they all go!

The Channel Islands Pride giant rainbow flag has arrived - thankyou so much to everyone who donated (your names will soon be embroidered on the flag!) We took it out for a test run this morning and it looks fantastic - if a little difficult to pack up!

Thankyou so much to everyone who came to our Channel Islands Pride fundraiser and summer mixer BBQ last night! It was fantastic to see the island’s LGBTQ community growing closer and to watch the diverse groups of people having fun. The event included a small tribute (pictured) to the people who were tragically killed in the recent Orlando shootings.

A Treasure Trove of Queer History Is Now Online

Want to read a gay meeting agenda from 1951? A lesbian periodical from the '70s? You can now. For LGBTQ people, printed media like The Advocate has had an important role in creating and fostering strong community ties.

Now, some of the earliest periodicals and newsletters, which shaped the perceptions of relevant issues for the LGBTQ community while providing news and information on meetings, demonstrations, events, entertainment and even LGBTQ-friendly businesses — have been digitized, preserved and made available in The Archives of Human Sexuality and Identity, the largest digital archive on LGBTQ history and culture. Developed and launched by Gale, a leading provider of resources for libraries and part of Cengage Learning,Part One: LGBTQ History and Culture since 1940 is now available, with two additional parts planned for the future.  

While one highlight of the archive is the unparalleled collection of newsletters, newspapers, and periodicals by, for, and about gays and lesbians — including some from places as distant as Latvia and Zimbabwe — The Archives of Human Sexuality and Identity goes well beyond these periodicals. It brings together in digital form approximately 1.5 million pages of rare and unique content — including personal correspondence and interviews with numerous LGBTQ individuals, organizational papers, government documents, manuscripts, pamphlets and other types of primary sources. The Archive covers social, political, health and legal issues impacting LGBTQ communities around the world, including the gay rights movement and the HIV/AIDS crisis.
