i gotta take a break from drawing so much from reference for a while.
i often find myself having problems with sticking too close to references to my detriment. when i was able to start drawing again a few years ago, i promised myself i would make the most of it and be studious. but in the last 6ish months I haven't really done anything NOT from reference, except for the ffxiv contest image. i find myself getting fatigued and missing the clarity in my art i had before i got injured. i think i was trying to make up for the loss of my skill and artistic vision by borrowing the stuff from nature. so i'm gonna just try to doodle and discover some things that i can't find in a reference.

I had a lot of fun doing this series as fish aren't something I normally draw or paint.
I have this as a print up on INPRNT, as well as a portrait-layout version!

So the FFXIV art contest finalists were announced, and I didn't make it, but here's what I submitted!
It's about my journey beginning playing FFXIV in 2.0, then becoming injured and being unable to do my work, hobbies, or play. Then by 2023 I was able to recover enough to play again. I decided to show my journey of healing through my Warrior of Light. (It seems like the short description you provided in the application isn't published on the website, so I'm not sure people wouldn't figured out that's what this piece is about, haha)
I tried hard to make the piece feel airy and free, like setting off on a new journey, while trying out new color and composition choices (for me).
haha i found this screenshot I took of the layers because it's probably the most I've ever had on a painting. I did NOT expand the folders but there's at least 3 more layers in each one. I feel like I mastered masks thanks to this painting.
Oh yeah, I guess I didn't post this here, but I did an inventory of all the bird families I have drawn a member of (based on what was already on my computer, I didn't go back through my sketchbooks)! 20 of the 40-something families is pretty good without intentionally doing it!
The family with the most pieces of art is... Strigiformes! Because I did a whole month of owls way back in 2011 or something. Second is Columbiformes (of course).

(maybe it's confusing why it looks like the tinnitus is coming from outside myself, but to me it really feels like the ringing is like, blowing up my ear like when a cartoon character is inside a bell and someone else hits it with a mallet. but just the ear)
In fifth grade, in 2000, I came up with a little mascot/sona for myself named Gemberly! I only drew her for about a year or so, but I remember she exists from time to time so I doodled her!
Originally I think she was based on a tern, but I decided to make her a tyrant-flycatcher because I think it fits me more! The gem doesn't do anything, that was just fifth-grader design brain.
I saw this really beautiful scene while driving today so I had to doodle it when I got home. Happy Earth Day, to my one and only favorite planet.

I got a new keyboard!!!
I had a piano as a kid and took lessons for 4-5 years but when I went to college I gave my family permission to sell it. I changed apartments often and was too busy to play so I’ve fallen way out of practice, but I’ve always wanted to continue! So I finally did!
I noodled around a bit and decided to try learning the first two measures of Fisherman’s Horizon tonight. Hey I forgot how hard it is to have your hands doing two completely separate things!!
