Don’t get angry at yourself for feeling drained. Growth takes a lot of energy. It’s really not as simple as it looks.

“Get out there and accomplish what it is that you wish to achieve, for the biggest thing that stands in your way is your own mind. Tell yourself that you can do this. Tell yourself, at each and every moment, that you can and you will fight passed every other obstacle that may present itself.”

Your existence is not insignificant, my love. Just because you may not have found your passion yet, it does not mean you have no purpose. Just because all you can manage to do at the moment is getting through a day without breaking down, it does not mean you are wasting your time. Just because you are not doing big things to change the world, it does not mean you are a bad person. You do not need to achieve big things to have meaning in this world, my love. You may feel as if you do not make a difference but trust me, you do. There are so many little things about you that make this world a better place. Your smile can make someone reconsider their choice to give up, your words can make someone finally feel happy again, your gestures can make someone believe in the good again. Even if you feel like you are just a tiny little light on this planet, you are actually the sun to so many people. Your existence matters. You are significant.
When you have been doing, so damn well.
When you have been getting up everyday, almost, effortlessly.
When you find yourself “happy” for moments of the day. You are able to see the sun shining through the clouds.
But then.
You wake up, and today, you just can’t.
I did it yesterday. Tomorrow is looking better. But today? Today I just can’t.
What I can do today I try my best to explain, to those who care, what is kind of going on.
I can sleep. I can give myself the break I do obviously need. (But will always feel badly for taking)
Today, all I can do, is my best.
And today, my best is me, in bed, taking care of ME! Focusing on healing ME!
And this is what that looks like on my, best-good days.
This photo was taken about 2 yrs ago. When I look at myself in this photo, I see that I did my makeup this day. I see that I look rather happy (I don’t always smile wide in photos) and I look alert. What I do not see in this photo, is the pain behind my eyes or in my soul. This photo was taken at a very dark and lonely time in my life. It was not quite the bottom of the rock bottom, but I was close. The girl in this photo was in so much pain. So much internalized pain, that she didn’t know the source or treatment for. The girl in this photo rarely smiled or laughed at this time. The girl in this photo had lost any will or reason to live any longer. She could not have cared less about her existence. This girl is forever grateful that she made it too the next year, and then another! I am grateful to talk about this part of my life, in past tense. It was scary. It was harder than living a good and happy life! It was, to this day in my 25.5 yrs on earth, the hardest thing I have ever done. To pull myself through each and every day. To push to survive just one more. Just one more. Maybe one more?! And one day, I was able to look back and smile without trying.

I was a cute kid, just saying ❤️
I don’t actually “hate” men. Hate is a strong word. But sometimes men royally piss me off. That’s what this book is about, with a comical glaze. It should be titled, “How to live in the same world as men..and not lose your shit”
I am angry and I am bored
There’s still a little bit
Of my sanity left,
Enough, maybe, to decipher
How I feel when I wake up
From a bad dream.
Nowadays they appear to be
parodies
Of my day-to-day
Life
But they run too fast with my thoughts
Of self-deprivation and loneliness
To be parodies worth laughing at.
I try so hard
To ignore them
And block everything out
But I’m angry
And I’m bored
Of sounding like a broken record.
But maybe I’m broken
And I’m angry
And I have every right to be.
Perfect.
“stop trying to hide within your trauma, you’re more than what they did to you.”
-a book that’ll be too hard to write
Damn.
Hit me hard.
I think people have this idea of mental illness as something that can be overcome rather than something that someone may live their entire life with. Can you recover from a bad period of it? Yes, but might you have to be on medicine your entire life? Yes. Are there symptoms you might have to put up with daily? Weekly? Yes. Are there ways it’ll impact the way you have to live your life, making your life look completely different from someone else’s? Yes.
Some mentally ill people can live life like everyone else. They can drive, have a 9:00 to 5:00 job, take care of the tasks that we’ve now dubbed “adulting,” have relationships. Some can only do one of those things, some can do none. Who’s more valid here? And the answer is none. No one is more valid here, but I think we need more representation and understanding of the people who can’t pull off living life like someone who is healthy.
A lot of the time if someone can’t live life like everyone else because of mental illness they’re seen as lazy, or to be wallowing in it, or living in the past, but that’s not it. Mental illnesses come with symptoms, debilitating symptoms, scary symptoms, annoying symptoms, frustrating symptoms.
Sometimes I can’t get out of the bed till the afternoon. Sometimes I can’t feed myself. I can’t drive. I can’t work a 9:00 to 5:00 job. Am I suddenly a failure because of all this? No, and anyone else struggling with this isn’t either. I have symptoms and illnesses that are causing all these issues in my life, traumas that have made me incapable of functioning like someone else who might’ve had a fairly stable life.
It is good to applaud those who can find workarounds with their illnesses, actors we see who have depression who do have families and work, or people in our lives who are still going despite it. But it’s also good to recognize that just because someone else can live like that it doesn’t mean everyone can. Sometimes mental illness is ugly. Sometimes it’s not getting out of bed and going to work despite being sad. Sometimes it’s frantically doing distress tolerance skills and grounding exercises for a week in an attempt to not hurt yourself because you think you’re dreaming. Sometimes it’s staying up for three days straight, and then having nightmares when you do finally sleep. Sometimes it’s not feeling anything despite everyone telling you how you should feel. Sometimes it’s being hounded by your traumas on loop day in and day out even as you try to live you life as is. Sure, sometimes it is getting yourself to drink a glass of water, opening your curtains, washing your face, and maybe washing your hair over the bathtub. Sometimes it’s going for a five minute walk, or changing into your favorite shirt, or maybe baking your favorite treat, or petting a cat, or listening to a song you really like. Sometimes it’s talking to your therapist, or psychiatrist, or using a coping skill, and other times it’s barely hanging on to life, and not functioning like everyone else is.
Mental illness can be ugly. Really ugly. And I want people to recognize more of the ugly without bringing down the people who are experiencing it. We’re not monsters, we’re not lazy, we’re not insane. We just need to live our lives differently, and that’s okay.
Beautiful and genuine ❤️
