Hooker Lawyer ft. Rider Strong
I’m so sorry.
etamorvitae:
She leans and just sobs. Cries so hard that she can’t speak. Or even think. Because right now she feels safe enough to do so.
When she finally calms enough to answer his question, Topanga pulls away so that she’s not muffled. “I was afraid of divorce. Getting a divorce like my parents was my worst nightmare. But I realized…it wasn’t divorce at all. It was becoming them. Two people who stayed together for the baby but made each other miserable until there was nothing left to them. No friendship to salvage, no meaningful love. Just a shitty existence. And this baby…if he and I stay together…it’ll be for this baby because I-” Until now she hadn’t said it out loud and the words catch in her throat. “I don’t love him, Shawn. I haven’t for, well for too long, and I’d just gotten brave enough to walk away.”
Maybe it’s the universe again. Could it be that her and Cory are really meant to be together? Is this the sign that she should just tough it out and eventually it’ll be good? The very thought makes her sick. And it makes her mad at the universe for having the audacity to think it gets to control her in any way.
Placing her hands gently over her stomach, Topanga looks at Shawn and for just one forbidden moment wonders what it would be like if things had gone differently.
“I want this baby, Shawn. I’m going to have this baby. And I’m going to be honest with Cory because I won’t let us become like my parents. He’s going to hate me.” Topanga looks back down. “Will you really be here for me? I’d understand…I mean you two…your friendship…” Wiping her eyes with the heel of her hand, she fixes her gaze back on him. “You know he’s not going to be rational about this. Are you sure it’s really worth being caught in the middle?” Are you sure I’m worth the trouble she doesn’t let herself ask out loud.
"...I understand.” All too well. Hadn’t that been why his mother, why Virna, had stayed? For him. Came back. A child that wasn’t even hers. Even though she was unhappy with her marriage, her life, she endured it all for the sake of him. Let it take a toll on her mental health. Until it became too much. The idea of Topanga going through something like that...
He noticed that she and Cory had been growing apart. While she had grown up, he really... hadn’t. Maybe she still loved him, but wasn’t in love with him? He didn’t presume to know how she felt. It was the type of love you felt for someone who was in your life for so long, such a big part of it... but there was no real romantic feeling. Again, he thought of Virna. “...You’re my friend too. I care about his feelings too, yeah, but sometimes... they’re not always valid. You need to do what’s best for you, what’s best for your baby. Topanga, I love you. Both of you.” Nice clarification, there. “There’s nothing more important to me than seeing to it that your baby grows up feeling...”
It wasn’t even his kid, but he didn’t want them to grow up with anything resembling the home life that he had. They wouldn’t, of course. Cory and Topanga were two different people. Their situation was different, but. “I’m going to do everything I can to see to it that you have a good life, a happy life. Both of you. Hopefully, Cory will... he may not be rational, not at first. When push comes to shove though, you know he’ll do whatever he can to make sure that you’re okay. Both of you. The real concern comes from whether or not he’ll respect your decisions... cause you any extra, unneeded stress. I’ll talk to him, I’ll try to mediate, but... I’m on your team here. Let me make that clear.” Giving a weak smile, he pressed a kiss to her temple.
etamorvitae:
Topanga barely heard a word he said as stepped in. She’d already prepared herself for a battle. Or a debate…which given how she did it was pretty much the same thing and she always won. “Now before you call me crazy, just think about it. We both could use this. A chance to-” And then it all catches up to her and she turns on him. “Wait what. You said what now? Yes…I mean you’re in? I mean yes of course I’m serious!”
He said yes. Which meant she could go. Not that she needed him, but also maybe she really kind of did. A swell of relief rushes through her.
“I really though you’d say no,” she admits. Smiling, Topanga pulls him into a happy and excited hug. “Are you sure though?” For as happy as she is she can’t help but worry. The last thing she wanted was for him to regret this. “Because I’d understand if you want to stay here.” She says like she hadn’t been prepared to give an entire speech on why he should come with her.
Smirking as he returned her hug, he drew back with a shrug. “I mean, it’s unexpected and spontaneous, but as soon as I processed what you said? I had to ask myself why I shouldn’t. Couldn’t come up with any real solid reason. There’s... too many memories, here. Yeah, there’s the Matthews, but... everyone’s got somewhere to go, and instead of waiting to be left behind, again. If I stay here, I won’t really go anywhere. If I go with you, I’ll be... somewhere.”
Sound logic.
"Like you said, or were going to say. It’s a chance for both of us to... I don’t know, flourish? That sounds too flowery. No pun intended, but... Turner’s in New York, I haven’t seen him in years... and if you’re going to be there, and you want me to go? You think I’ll be able to sleep at night knowing you’re all alone there, working your butt off? No one there for you when you? Not that you can’t take care of yourself, but... nope, I don’t like that picture. Again, while I myself am here, alone and miserable. It’s more fun to think about finding myself some work, and then meeting up with you at the end of the day.“
He didn’t know what Cory had planned for himself, but... that was Cory’s life. His decisions. This was his. Topanga wasn’t making it or him so much as presenting an option, and it seemed like a damn good one the more he thought about it.
Explicit Shawn Hunter.
I am deeply ashamed.
The year has been hard for Topanga. Admittedly one of her hardest. What she wished she could say was that she felt stronger, freer, independent. But the truth was that half the time she just felt like an open wound. Raw. And aching. Weak even. Not that she was filled with regret. Leaving Cory was the right choice. Even at her lowest moments she still can’t doubt that.
But that doesn’t change the fact that someone she’s known since she was a toddler was out of her life now. Any friendship they could maybe have was far off. And now she was being presented with an opportunity so big she couldn’t imagine turning it down. A full scholarship. New York City. Life outside of this small world she’d held onto for so long. Too long.
It seemed like an easy decision. Except for the part where going all alone terrified her. She would have asked Angela to go had she not been given her own incredible opportunity. As Topanga packed she came across an old picture of her and Shawn. Their friendship had become more complicated. Of course Cory was his best friend, but since Angela was hers and he was with Angela they’d maintained their friendship more than they may have if not for Angela.
And she could only imagine how much he was hurting right now, too. Maybe it was a bad idea. Or really it was absolutely a bad idea. She’d already had it though and found herself outside his door knocking until he answered. “Come to New York with me,” Topanga blurts out before he can even ask why she’s there. // @lifemakesyourich
Well this was unexpected, but it only took a brief moment after processing what she had to weigh the option. Why not? What was keeping him in Philadelphia, really? Aside from Cory. He had no parents. Jack would be graduating soon. Angela herself was leaving, and Topanga...
Turner had moved to New York, after marrying that nurse he met after his accident. He was family, and it would be nice to get back in touch with him, maybe. A place to start fresh, figure out who he wanted to be, what he wanted to do. Come into his own. Plus... well, if Topanga wanted him to go with her? How could he really say no? The thought of her, all alone, trying to make it on her own. Isolated, stretching herself too thin what with the likely overachieving... it was probably vaguely sexist to say she needed someone to take care of her, so he wouldn’t. Still, to be there when she needed a break? Needed to be reminded to relax? Fuck, when she just needed a friend.
“ can't just pack up and leave. I mean, I've got a mother and a father and a girlfriend and a good job.“ Slowly, his straight face cracked and he broke into a smirk before ushering her inside. He was the one who got left, he didn’t usually do the leaving. Well, he left after his dad died, but he came back. What he had been looking for... was right there the whole time. Cory, and Topanga, and the Matthews and Feeny. Family. A place he belonged. Now everyone would be going their seperate ways, and rather than being left again... why not hit the road again? Only this time, maybe with some company? Maybe this time, instead of the whole ‘keep moving’ approach... he settled down somewhere. New York. Maybe this was what they both needed, an escape. A chance, to be their best selves. There were too many memories around here, too much baggage weighing them both down.
"...You’re serious? ...Okay, sure.”
“I can’t do this!” Topanga is near hysterical as she rants to Shawn. “This is insane, Shawn, in-fucking-sane and I can’t do it!”
Her and Cory have been on the rocks…well if she’s being painfully honest, since high school. But here, just a few years into their marriage she’s finally had to accept the truth. They weren’t built to last. He wouldn’t admit it. His unwavering faith in the universe was sweet when they were kids. It just pisses her off now.
Topanga was so close. Getting ready to tell him she wanted a divorce. Until a stupid little test with it’s judgmental pink lines decided to tell her something positive. She still hadn’t told Cory. It seemed cruel to say hey you’re gonna be a dad, but like a single one because I’m out. So she came to Shawn. She already knew she could trust him to keep her secrets, even from Cory, he’d done it before.
Finally she sits down next to him. “Shawn, I’m scared.” She admits, voice small as she hides her face in her hands. // @lifemakesyourich
He doesn’t know why, but somehow he always managed to become rational in times of crisis. Well, not always, but when it was the people he loved having a crisis? He couldn’t help but think back to the complications that arose around Josh’s birth. What should have been a happy occasion. This should have... well... it wasn’t for him to say whether it was or not. He had his thoughts, his feelings, but they were all irrelevant. What mattered right now was Topanga, her peace of mind.
“You know I love you. That I love Cory. This is your life though, Topanga. It’s your choice. Your body... do you want to have this baby?” If she didn’t, he’d go with her. Wait with her. Support her every step of the way. If she did? He’d go with her. Wait with her. Support her every step of the way. “...or do you want the baby, but not Cory, not anymore, and you’re afraid that you can’t do this on your own? ...Because you wouldn’t be alone. You’d have me... and even if you two weren’t together, I’m sure he’d...”
Why was he still talking? Wrapping an arm around her, he let out a heavy breath. “...you have every right to be scared, but that’s okay. I’m here. Let’s try to figure out... what you want. What you don’t. What you think you can handle, etc... we don’t have to do that now, though. Not if you don’t want to.”
