from a professional anxious student
Prepare yourself. This may seem obvious, but it’s the best you can do. If you’re well prepared, you’ll be a lot less stressed (or not stressed at all!) and your inicial anxiety will dissipate as soon as you start answering questions!
“What is difficult today, may seem much easier tomorrow.” Be patient with yourself and don’t freak out if you don’t learn everything the second you start studying it. Don’t give up and you’ll eventually get the hang of it!
Get confident! With a negative mindselt, you’re digging your own grave.Who says you can’t do it? Go to that test thinking that you’re gonna ace it!
Review notes right before the test. This one helps me a lot because I know the information is, once again, fresh.
Make sure you have all the material you need. Make a list the night before so you’ll be sure you won’t forget anything.
The basics: pencil, erasers, pens, water bottle
First thing: write down the main points on your paper. Formulas? Key words? Write it down.
Calm down. Close your eyes and take deep breaths.
hold it for seven seconds
Do this at least five times.
Can’t do it? Next question.
“I can’t remember anything” Yes, you can, you just need to calm down. Anxiety is confusing your thoughts and making you think about the worst case scenario.
Start by quick and easy questions, this will make you more confident and also more secure.
Don’t panic if you think a question is too hard. Read the easy ones again, this may help you get the information you need.
Don’t leave blank answers!! You never know if your “bullshit answer” is not the right one. Been there, done that.
Focus on the test. I can’t stress this enough. Pay attention to what you’re doing right now. Don’t start making assumptions about your grade, don’t start thinking that you’re going to fail. Don’t even think about the last/next question.
If you have time, review your answers.
Spare at least twenty minutes to copy your answers to the answer sheet.
Hand in your test like you’re conquering a kingdom.
Again, calm down. If you need to, repeat the same breathing exercise.
Discussing answers can be a russian roulette. If you get matching answers, it will be a relief, if you don’t, it’s only gonna make you more stressed. See what’s best for you.
If you think that you had a bad grade because you have several “wrong” answers, remember that your classmates don’t always have the right answers. I have been in situations in which I thought I got the wrong answer, but ended up being the only one who got it right.
If you do fail, it’s not the end of the world. Focus on your weak spots and try harder next time. Failure is part of the road to success.
Drink water, eat well, rest. Treat your body well.
Don’t forget to write your name. Seriously.
Perspective is the key: focus on the bigger picture.
Okay so you’re SURE you’re going to fail your chem test, but you had great grades so far. What’s the big deal? Yeah, you have one bad grade, so that means it’s a lot easier to bring it up again.
If you need, get help. This may be from your parents, your school principal, your teacher, your psychologist, whatever. Sometimes, anxiety gets too strong and you may need the assistance of a professional.
