Underinsurance in Australia
I've been Fortunate.
Every weekend, I try as most daughters to call their mum, say hello and have a chat. Sometimes things pop up or I’m working but last weekend I made some time and finally called and we had a really good conversation. My parents live in Canada, where I am originally from, but I have called Australia home for more than fifteen years.
When we spoke I told her about what I’m doing with Lifewise, and the recent Baby & Toddler show I attended, my mum’s reply, ‘that’s nice’. She then started to say how lucky we have been… ‘If something ever happened to your dad when you were younger, we would have lost everything,’ she added. Knowing that when I was just two my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but luckily it was in a tumor and was removed, no complications, clear bill of health following. Then again when I was nine, they found another tumor and removed it. My mother never worked and my father did not have income protection or life insurance.
We have always joked that my father was like a cat with nine lives. Finally, in 2003 one of those lives almost came to an end when my father suffered a stroke. I was delivered very grim news upon my arrival, it was a mid-severe stroke and chances were he would not recover, I was told to ‘make arrangements for alternate care.’ By this time my parents were older, the mortgage was paid off, but I remember still thinking, ‘what will mum do?’ Well, within four months, and amazing strength on my father’s part, my father made a near normal recovery. Luckily, I never had to make any life altering decisions and life eventually when back to normal.
Now in his late 70’s my father has been dealt another demon, and is battling leukemia. Life is life and he understands that he’s been fortunate. It may have turned out dramatically different – if he was not here, we would have lost the house and my mother would have had to go on government support. Knowing that, and what I do with Lifewise – I’m lucky as I know better and I wouldn’t want to risk it for my kids.
So, I’ve been fortunate. I’ve never had to know what it was like to lose my father earlier in life or have our family lose everything because of his loss and loss of his income.
But I would hate to gamble on fortune. Right now, in Australia, many are. When it comes to life insurance, Australia is one of the most under-insured countries in the world, coming in at number 16 on a global listing.
A study completed by the Financial Services Council (FSC) showed that Australians with dependents were under insured by 1.37 trillion. Simply put, only 4% of our population that has children have a sufficient amount of insurance.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that 3 in every 4 Australians will be diagnosed with a serious illness during their working life.
If you were to become unable to work and your income ceased, what would you do? Sell assets at a decreased value? Rely on government payments that are considerably less than your current income?
These options would require you to decrease your standard of living dramatically, something that many Australians look to avoid after having worked so hard to reach them in the first place.
By taking out income protection or life insurance, you’re ensuring that if your income stops, your lifestyle doesn’t. If you pass away, your family can continue with financial support to live the life you have worked so hard to provide them with.
For me, it’s pretty simple, I don’t like to gamble. If you don’t either, check with your superfund to find out how much cover you already have, then go to the Lifewise insurance needs calculator to find out how much is enough http://lifewise.org.au/calculator.

DO YOU HAVE A PLAN?
Over the last week I have heard a few appeals in the media and in social media; 'Father of twins diagnosed with brain cancer, appeals for donations so family can be looked after', 'Mother and baby die instantly in accident, family seeks donations to assist living family cover their cost of living'.
These are only two, there are many more. It truly breaks my heart to think of any family out there battling these demons and dealing with the thought of their child/rens questionable future.
I have children, and to me, nothing could be worse to know I cannot be there for their tomorrows, but more, that they may become displaced, and lose everything I have worked so hard to give them and have a questionable future.
Do you have a plan?
Many think, she'll be right, never mind - it won't happen to me, and if it does family, friends or the government will take care of me. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
The fact is, all our futures have a question mark. Sickness, or an accident may happen, it's part of life but what we can do is plan to ensure if anything does happen, you and your family are safeguarded.
A guide
Income Protection is a monthly benefit that pays you up to 75% of your income and covers you for accidents, illnesses or major traumas. It pays you up until you return to work (after your waiting period), if you cant return, up until retirement age being age 65 (depending on your occupation). Income protection is tax deductible and is designed to ensure that you can continue to pay the mortgage, put food on the table and carry on financially until you return to work.
Life insurance, which pays out a lump sum to the policy holder's estate upon their death, can also provide comfort, knowing that your family will be able to pay off the mortgage, the bills or school fees if you should die unexpectedly.
Most Australians have some cover in their superannuation. By law, superfund trustees must provide a minimum level of life insurance cover for their members. So this is a good starting point.
The Steps
Contact your superannuation fund. Find out how much cover you have.
Educate yourself. Go to lifewise.org.au to find any information you need and use the insurance needs calculator to find out how much is enough.
Take action. There is nothing worse than saying 'I should have' so don't.
Everyone's circumstances are different, work out which is best for you. Your options are: Go direct to an insurer. Go seek further advice from a Financial Adviser. Contact your superfund to find out how to supplement your current cover to what is required.
In the end, one of the families which has been appealing to the public ended up with roughly $17,000. Which is an amazing effort for the community, however, we all know, with a mortgage, bills, and kids, that is just a drop in the water.
Lifewise is an awareness campaign which talks to Australians about the issue of underinsurance.
Currently, 95% of Australians are underinsured.
Time to remove yourself from that figure.
Love Life? Protect it.
Underinsurance an issue? In Australia it is, with over 95% of Australians underinsured. Holly Dorber, of the Lifewise awareness campaign discusses the topic, the issues, and the future with Tim Blue of BRR Media in this Vanguard sponsored episode.
Recently, Lifewise released some work-life balance research... the results may surprise you.
We surveyed over 1200 Australians and of those surveyed:
- 76% highly valued work-life balance
- However, 62% were working more to fund their lifestyle. Sacrificing what they value the most to afford the little luxuries, pay off their mortgage, or possibly just to pay the bills, but only 23% are putting a safety net in place to protect their income.
Seems strange? Many may dispute they do not need income protection, or that it is simply too expensive, honestly with some cover already in your super - its never been more affordable. And if you are dealt with an unexpected illness in your family, relying on friends or the government to step in and help, may end in disappointment.
Let me put it in a different perspective, if something was to happen to you or the main breadwinner in your family, how much do you have tucked away to pay your mortgage, bills, and keep up your current standard of living? Our research has shown that 1 in 5 families would last up to a month. Then what? Do you have a plan?
So, think about the 'what if' and contact your superfund to find out if you already have some cover with them. For more information, or to find out how much cover is enough, go to www.lifewise.org.au our website features a simple insurance needs calculator and a host of other information to get you started in the right direction.
