what really gets me about the Passion narrative is how you can really feel the Hand of God in all of the events. the energy is haunting, fateful. everything calls back to Scripture, everyone is prophesying, even the people condemning Jesus to death. some of the examples that stood out to me:
- Pilate’s wife telling him to have nothing to do with that righteous man, because of her dream
- the high priest saying it is better for one man to die for the people, than the whole nation to perish
- Barabbas meaning ‘son of the father’ being exchanged for the Son of the Father.
- my favourite: Pilate saying he is innocent of Jesus’ blood and the crowds should look to it themselves. and they reply: "His blood be upon us and upon our children." the double meaning here though they don’t realise it
- Jesus refusing to drink the wine because He told his disciples He would not drink it until He drinks it with them in heaven
- Pilate writing “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” and refusing to change it
- "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, if you are the Son of God, and come down from the cross!"
- Jesus’ criticism of the Pharisees becoming clear when they refuse to put Judas’ silver coins in the temple treasury because it is blood money, but are fine with letting an innocent man be put to death
Christ Praying on the Mount of Olives (Hans Thoma, 1893)
life is a mess and all but then holy thursday comes around and im like wow i truly do not want to do anything other than sitting with jesus at gethsemane for the rest of my life
OK but like...Gethsemane. Gethsemane, guys. I cannot express enough how important Gethsemane is and what happened there. Not to downplay the incredible importance of what happened on the Cross, of course not, but I find people really don't talk about Gethsemane enough in comparison, so I'm going to do it myself.
Gethsemane is found at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Fitting its name, the garden itself is full of olive trees, a kind of tree which holds great significance in scripture, probably the most revered plant in the bible. It is a symbol of peace, new life, prosperity, and reconciliation. It was the branch of an olive tree that the dove brought back to Noah while on the ark, signifying that the floods were receding. An olive tree is used to describe Jesus's jewish roots as the stem of David, two olive trees are used as symbolism in Revelations, and the people of Israel are likened to an olive tree and its branches. And this is only a few of the many references to olive trees in the Bible.
Olive Trees were and still are highly valued for their oil, which can be retrieved from the olives themselves. Olive oil was used as medicine, for light, for making food, etc. It was a very valuable resource, and still is.
The very name of this garden, Gethsemane, means “Oil Press”, where oil is obtained from the olives-by squeezing and crushing them. Only by being crushed can this precious oil be obtained.
When the olives are first crushed, the liquid begins to leak out, but rather than coming out as the golden-green color that we are used to, it instead comes out as a dark red hue, looking eerily similar to blood.
Only later does the oil turn into its famous golden-green color.
Like the olives being crushed for their oil, Jesus Christ was being pressed and crushed by the weight of the Atonement in the garden, suffering through such incomprehensible anguish and agony that, according to Luke's account, He literally started sweating blood.
KJV Luke 22: 44: "And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was like great drops of blood falling down to the ground."
(Believe it or not, sweating blood is an actual medical condition called Hematidrosis, which is caused by an extreme level of stress.)
Another important thing about olive oil's use during Christ's time: it was also used for ceremonial annointing, especially for sacred rituals performed in the temple, consecrating those like priests, kings and prophets. To be annointed means to be chosen or set apart for a specific role by God, often signified by smearing oil on the body or head, and what is the true meaning of Christ's title as the Messiah?
"The Annointed One."
And yet now, here in Gethsemane, Jesus has rather become the olive. He is the one being crushed, for the sins and pains of the world in the shadow of the Mount of Olives, His blood, like the sacred oil, to be used to annoint us, to not only save us but to make us into something greater than we could ever be by ourselves.
Also, very very interesting that Gethsemane is described as a garden. Only so many gardens are mentioned in the Bible, the most well known and one of the only other named gardens being the Garden of Eden, the paradise where humankind was first created and dwelt with God. Eden was a place of beauty, of innocence, and represented humanity's oneness with the Father.
But when Adam and Eve partook of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, that innocence was lost, and thus the first man and woman could no longer dwell in Eden, and were driven out. Because of transgression, humankind had fallen.
In Eden's garden, beneath a tree, mankind lost its innocence resulting in the Fall, and became seperated from its creator, but in another garden millennia later, beneath the olive trees, that same creator would begin the agonizing process required to save us and lift us, mankind, from the consequences of that fall, to bring us back to the true garden of the Lord.
In the place of the Oil Press Jesus Christ allowed Himself to be pressed and crushed in our stead, letting Himself to eventually be led to the cross, taking upon Himself the demands of justice so that we might not suffer a similar fate, if we so choose to follow Him.
That is what happened in Gethsemane.
Jesus prays in the garden of gethsemane for God’s will to be done. He also warns His disciples to watch and pray to avoid falling into temptation.
“Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!””—Matthew 26:36-46 NLT

can you believe this day?
can you believe a love SO GREAT exists that would die for us, for all of us, up on a cross?
can you believe the God of the Universe Himself would submit to being tortured and executed because it’d save us? can you believe he did it for you?
i love how insane i get during easter week
THE MOST MAGICAL WEEK OF THE YEAR IS HEREEEE
hi soooo i've been working corporate for almost two years and last month i finally decided to try and go back to my former field because i am so burnt out i can't think properly. last week i got a reply from an application and i had an interview for what would be literally a dream job, super niche, and probably better paying too. i know my chances right now are like 2% because even if i get through the first round i'd still have two more interviews so i am trying to not get too attached to this idea but its SUCH a dream role, any prayers would be highly appreaciated <333
i woke up to this having over 40 notes thank u all so much sob

HELP MY FRIEND SAVE HER CAT!!
I have helped my friend fundraising for 2 of her late cats before for cancer treatment and this time she needs help saving her cat Kyo from a relentless infection.
Earlier this year she also had to enter medical debt to help her dad with his diabetes treatment, he got hospitalized for weeks and ended up needing amputation and getting mobility aids. She is still very much in deep debt and now with veterinary expenses she urgently needs help.
Between both of us we censored any sensitive information but we still hold original documents, pictures and videos.
This is Kyo, he is only 1 year old. This may be just a cat but I have known Hoshi for the past 24 years and I know she wouldn't be here without the love of her cats.
There are many more pictures of proof I'll be adding to another reblog, right now to pay off all the veterinary debt she needs almost $13,000 mexican pesos, that is $750 usd give or take.

My friend still needs help please!!!
Catholic faith: The Pope is the closest to God and speaks His word
The Pope: Don’t be a dick to poor people
Fake Catholic: Not what I signed on for
The lion does not concern himself with the opinion of non-trinitarians
I don't mind if this comes of as "gatekeeping", but christianity and racism are fundamentally incompatible.
i think we as catholics need to bring back listening to the pope.
it’s insane the number of rad trads who are ready to fight a crusade but are criticising the pope for the basic catholic teachings of: death penalty is bad, migrants should be treated compassionately, and people of all religions should be respected and encouraged to promote peace, justice, and fraternity.
