From Chapter 14: The concert
A few minutes later, the lights in the room get dimmer and there are a few excited whistles coming from the floor. The frontman steps up to introduce the group, lit up by a spotlight directly on him. Then, the other members make their entrance, starting from the drummer, then the bass player, then… Eddie.
He’s wearing a denim vest over... over nothing, Steve realizes, blinking rapidly as he observes from the sidelines. He has black ripped jeans, black boots and a silver chain dangling from his neck as he bends forward to let a long, sustained note ring out like a welcome to the crowd, rings glinting under the direct light. Veins are clearly protruding on his forearm. Maybe it’s the heat.
Leaning even more of his weight into the wall behind him, Steve feels a pull in his stomach as he sees Eddie smile at the shouts coming from the crowd, before throwing his hand up to demand more: more racket, more mess, more chaos. The room obliges with a roar. The drummer starts a rhythm with his sticks before all instruments erupt into organized mayhem.
Steve’s eyes are glued to Eddie, mesmerized by the way he moves, shocked at how Eddie seems unbreakable on stage, like nothing can touch him. He’s miles away from the boy with hunched shoulders who told Steve he wasn’t used to good things. Steve’s mind definitely struggles to wrap itself around the concept, as he watches Eddie’s fingers move with impressive speed over the neck of the guitar.
One moment Eddie is looking toward the bass player, his tongue peeking out as he focuses on keeping his rhythm identical to that of the other guy – the next, a moment of release, he turns toward the crowd, headbanging and smiling as he sees someone follow along. His necklace bounces back and forth, back and forth, back and forth as he does this, slightly bent forward.
Shit.

“Wanna kill it?” Eddie asks, turning and offering the joint back.
He's holding it with the filter towards Steve, pinching it between thumb and forefinger.
Eddie probably expects Steve to take it from him, but Steve wants to take the hit directly from Eddie's fingers.
So he does.
Finding courage from God knows where, he leans his head forward, so very slowly. When he reaches Eddie's hand – is it trembling a little? – he opens his mouth just enough to wrap his lips around the end of the paper filter. Inhales the smoke and holds it inside his lungs, welcoming the burn it brings.
He looks up.
Eddie's eyes are transfixed on Steve's mouth as a dark blush stains his cheeks. Mouth slightly agape.
Steve pulls back an inch, exhales against Eddie's fingers. Eddie's eyes shift to meet his own, and… his pupils are blown.
Heat pools in Steve's stomach.
Steve knows it must show on his own face – in the burning cheeks, in the way he swallows around nothing.
Shit. No going back.
