Scrying 101: The Quick Basics (& How-To)
Scrying is the art of divining images and symbols from a scrying source, such as a mirror, reflective surface, or candle flame. There are many subsections of scrying, and some of the most common include:
Using a Scrying Mirror: A scrying mirror is a reflective, black mirror that is gazed into to scry. The user typically lights a candle to gaze into it.
Using a Regular Mirror: Regular mirrors may also be used to scry, particularly in conjunction with truth or glamor spells.
Scrying with Water: Gazing into a bowl filled with water can divulge images. A scrying bowl may be used here (which is often also black, like the scrying mirror), but any vessel which will hold a flat, reflective water surface works. Some folks like to set a candle in the middle of the bowl before adding water.
Scrying with a Crystal Ball: I know, it’s the quintessential movie witch’s tool! Scrying can be accomplished by gazing into a spherical crystal via candlelight or other light (moonlight, et cetera) and taking note of the visions seen. The ball is usually balanced on a ring or a pillow.
If you feel like scrying is your bag, you may want to give simple bowl scrying a shot:
Find a bowl with nothing on the inside bottom (no pattern, design, et cetera). Bonus points if the bowl is reflective!
Set up a space to scry. You’ll want to turn of all the lights, and light a candle safely.
Fill up your scrying vessel with water. (You can absolutely use moon water or other special waters, or consecrate your water with herbs and salt).
Gaze into the bowl by candlelight. Try to become attuned to it. You’ll notice shapes begin to appear.
Don’t forget to take notes! You’ll want to Google or inspect those shapes and symbols to see what they mean in terms of your own experience and personal correspondences. A simple search for “symbolism in witchcraft” or “symbol correspondences in witchcraft” should do the trick. You might also check with “dream symbolism” lists.
