My photos of the West Point Lighthouse which is automated and the buildings have been boarded up and abandoned.
Honestly it’s heartbreaking to see such a beautiful light in such a state of disrepair, just because the light itself is automated it does not mean the lighthouse, the keeper houses, and surrounding property should just be entirely neglected. This light is a historical site and it should be preserved and treated as such.
Maybe my favorite light I’ve visited!

Sambro Island Lighthouse, Halifax, NS
The Sambro Island Lighthouse was first built in 1759 and first lit the same year. It stands at 82 feet tall and has 153 steps to the top. It’s lit with a first-order fresnel lens. It was built during the Seven Years War and was one of the first acts approved by the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia making it the oldest surviving lighthouse in North America.

Dunkirk/Risban Lighthouse, Dunkirk, FR
The Dunkirk Lighthouse was first built in 1681, and first lit in 1683. The original beacon was swept away by a storm in 1825. The tower was rebuilt in 1842 and put into service the following year. It stands at 206 feet tall and has 276 steps to the top. It is lit with a third-order fresnel lens. The light was severely damaged in the bombings of 1940 and it was repaired in 1946. The Dunkirk Lighthouse was automated in 1985 and restored in 1992.

Boston Light, Hull, MA
The Boston Light was built in 1716 and first lit that same year. It stands at 75 feet tall and has 76 steps and 2 ladders. It is lit with a second-order Fresnel lens. The original tower was briefly destroyed by the British forces in the American Revolutionary War and the current tower was reconstructed in 1783. The Boston Light is the only lighthouse to still be actively staffed by the US Coast Guard.

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, Ilwaco, WA
The Cape Disappointment Light was built in 1856 and first lit October 15th the same year. It stands at 53 feet tall and was the first lighthouse in the Pacific Northwest. A first-order Fresnel lens was originally installed but later swapped out for a fourth-order Fresnel lens due to difficulty with the lights visibility. The Light was electrified in 1937 and automated in 1973. The Cape Disappointment Light is still used as a navigational aid to this day.
Rose Island Lighthouse, Newport, RI
The Rose Island Light was built in 1870 and lit January 20th the same year. It stands at 35 feet tall and there are 56 steps. The Light uses a sixth-order Fresnel lens. It was unfortunately abandoned in 1970 due to the construction of the Newport Bridge. However it was given for free to the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation who restored the light and relit it in 1992. It is now a tourist destination.

Castlepoint Lighthouse, Castlepoint, NZ
The Castlepoint Lighthouse was first built in 1913 and was lit on the 12th of January that same year. It originally was lit with oil but in 1953 an electric lamp was installed. This light uses a second-order Fresnel lens, and was fully automated in 1988. In 1942 the Wairarapa earthquakes shook the lower north island of New Zealand resulting in the optic bearing to spill mercury in the tower. The Castlepoint Light stands at 75 feet tall to this day and is a popular tourist spot.

Wind Point Lighthouse, Racine, WI
The Wind Point Lighthouse, was originally established in 1880. It was lit for the first time on November 15th that same year. This light stands at 108 feet tall and has 144 iron steps. The station uses a third-order Fresnel lens and still operates today.
Robinson Point Light, Isle au Haut, ME
The Robinson Point Light, also known as the Isle au Haut Light, was originally established in 1907. It stands at 12 feet tall and used a fourth-order fresnel lens. It was automated in 1934. The lighthouse was than converted into a bed and breakfast and operated as such until 2007. The Robinson Point Light is still in service today.
