Straight up - scary stories, scare me. So why did I chose a story titled The Fear In The Unknown? So I could add a flower and a butterfly to the artwork. No - really I wanted to challenge myself. Dip my toe into a new world. Turn myself towards something I would turn normally turn away from. Be brave as we are shown. A shout out to @lightwoodsmagic for bravely allowing me to take this journey with them and their story.

I'm honoured to share a bit of @lightwoodsmagic's story. One eye opened, one eye closed, here we go.

The Fear In The Unknown

“That’s the difference between you and me, Bones,” Louis murmured, eyes bright and teasing as he leant in close. “I can’t shut all those feelings in my head off.”

Harry wanted to laugh, wanted to tease him with a quip about Louis always leading with his heart, but Louis was pressing closer now, a grin on his face and his arm against the wall next to Harry’s head and he smelled like coffee and sandalwood and -

“Don’t call me Bones.”

Eyes opened - see that wasn't so scary.

In This World (It's Just Us)

“So, you understand, Mr. Tomlinson?” Harry says, watching as Louis glances around the room, curious and clearly more than a bit distracted. He gets a non-committal answer, an ‘um, yeah’ that Harry hadn’t even fully believed the first time around, let alone now, but he knows his job, knows the part he has to play.

“Alright, well, then we’d like to start our first trial immediately, if you’re alright with it.” Harry says as he opens the door to an adjacent room. He knows that it’s what he’s supposed to say, but even as he says it all he wants is to tell Louis to say no. To at least ask more questions. He wants him to stop and think for a moment, to realise that this all doesn’t entirely make sense. A facility that tests the strength of memories? That forces people to stay for an indeterminate amount of time? He wants to grab his arm and shake him, tell him to stop being so impulsive for one damn moment and actually think this through. 

“I’m alright with it,” Louis says, and Harry swallows back everything, instead leading him to the room next door and gesturing to a seat. He even manages to plaster on a smile when he hears what Louis says next. “though if we’re going to be working together, then, I’d like to know your name, if that’s alright. Seems a bit daft, calling you H. Styles in my head. Or that guy.”

It’s weird. It’s weird how all of this is exactly the same as before. He’d expected it to an extent. The clothes, the impulsiveness with which he’d signed all the papers, barely even glancing at them, nevermind taking the time to read them, seduced by the money that was promised. But the whole scene? Down to the same jokes, the same words and inflection? It’s eerie.

It means the world to me how much y'all SHOWED UP for this list -- I can't express how grateful I am to see the love for Liam. With 29 fics, it is officially the second-largest list we've had all year. It has a wide range of ships, from Ziam or Larry to OT5 or Lilo, as well as genfics. There's also as usual a variety of types of fic -- word counts from under 1,000 words to over 100,000, ratings from General to Explicit, stories from Porn Without Plot to So Much Plot to Both Porn And Plot.

I can't believe it's been a month tomorrow -- it feels like it just happened, and also like it's been forever, and also like it's still a bad dream that isn't quite real. Grief catches you in the strangest places, surprises you when you least expect it. To everyone still trying to wrap their minds around this tragedy, trying to figure out a way forward through it -- I see you, I love you, I'm glad you're here, and I support you in whatever you need.
