Tara was asking about how she felt, if she felt any different. Sheâd been there when Kennedy had discovered that her powers were gone, and she owed Tara nothing but the truth. But the truth was, she wasnât sure. She didnât feel any different, but by logic, she should have her powers back. But somewhere, at the back of her mind, she knew she didnât. She knew that this was some sort of divine punishment, laid onto her, not just by the jinn, but some higher power that saw it fit to strip her of everything that had made her who she was. Had been. Had grown in to. Sure, Kennedy was defined by other things, but being a slayer, being given a power to help people, it had been something that sheâd chosen to define her. A duty, a giftâ it always came with a price, and even if that price had been living a normal life, sheâd been willing and ready to give that up. And now it was gone and her sacrifice was for nothing. And she couldnât help people like she had been before.
âNo, I umâŠnot yet,â she said back quietly. âBut Iâm sure itâll come back soon. It might just take a sec, since itâs so powerful, ya know?â she said, shrugging, then followed Tara to the couch and sat down, setting the popcorn on her lap. She sat next to Tara, her free arm between the two so that her cast wouldnât accidentally hit Tara or something. Thatâs what she told herself. Itâd been about a week since sheâd hurt her arm. She was due for a check up and a new cast, one that wouldnât require a sling, and she was thinking of asking Tara to come with her. Maybe. Her mind was pulled from the funny thoughts by Taraâs soft voice. She turned to look at her and watch as she pulled some popcorn out of the bowl in her lap. Kennedy blinked and smiled. âOh, you know,â she said, shrugging. âOnly a few times. Four or five.â She giggled and watched as Tara smiled. It was as if every time she heard Kennedyâs voice, she got a little more happy. A little more grounded. A little more here, and now.
The movie started but Kennedy couldnât focus on it. Not because sheâd seen it so many times, but because there was definitely a lot of other things on her mind. It started out like most Jim Carrey movies started and Tara was chuckling here and there and Kennedy found it to be the most adorable thing ever. Instead of watching the TV, she found herself glancing at Tara more often than the TV. Every time Tara would say something about the movie or giggle, she would avert her eyes back to the little glowing box and pretend she hadnât been staring. So far her best distraction was the soda on the table and the popcorn in her lap. She wasnât sure why she didnât just set the popcorn on the table, and with a reluctant sigh, she pulled it from her lap and set it down on the table, and grabbed her soda. The movie was at the part now where Jim Carrey was talking to Morgan Freeman, who was God posing as a janitor. Kennedy chuckled. âFigures Morgan Freeman is God, right? He always plays those kinds of parts,â she snickered and Tara smiled at her and agreed.
Setting her soda back on the table, Kennedy reached back into the popcorn bowl to grab a handful when she felt something bump her hand. It was Taraâs own hand, reaching into the popcorn bowl as we.. Sheâd been caught up in the movie and hadnât noticed Kennedy reaching over as well. Her heart thumped loudly and caught in her throat and she half choked, pulling her hand away. âS-sorry, didnât see,â she muttered quietly, looking away. Tara pulled away nervously as well and they both re-focused on the blaring TV. Her heart was still fluttering and she found herself tapping her fingers on her lap. She looked over at Tara again, who was still trying to focus on the TV. Her eyes lowered to Taraâs hand, on the couch. She wasnât sure why, but something compelled her to reach out, and set her hand on top of Taraâs, like some reassuring gesture, saying âthis is it. This is real. Youâre realâ. She curled her fingers around Taraâs and gave her her best smile when Tara turned her head to look at her. She didnât have words, but they somehow seemed unnecessary right now.
She wanted to hold Kennedy's hand the moment she first moved in. But she was a ghost then, and she had reached to touch the slayer's hand just to have it slip right through it. She wanted their fingers intertwined, tangled together. Because she was sure, when he held that hand, she was sure she'd find home. She'd find peace. She was sure that the spaces between her fingers were right where Kennedy's fit perfectly. And Tara was right. The spaces between her fingers were right where Kennedy fit. Their hands were hopelessly twisted in their own embrace.Â
She had this theory. The overlooked art of the world was holding hands. It was often seen as only a small sign of intimacy. Something off hand and thrown away. But to those few individuals that could truly appreciate holding hands for what it really was knew the significance such a gesture can hold. Holding hands was the way one person could tell another that they were not alone, that they would always have each other. And Kennedy had shown her that she would be there for her, no matter what. Through thick and thin and everything in between. The palm of her hand felt warm, and Tara could not help but give it a few squeezes.
She tried to concentrate on the movie. On what Jim Carrey was doing, but when Kennedy spoke, her thoughts were interrupted and she once against focused on her. She looked at her lips, the way they moved and she thought about kissing her. When one person kisses another they were only able to see the one they love, the outside world would fade away and they became oblivious to reality. Moments like this were beautiful and lovely but love was so much easier in this fantasy world. And for those brief moments, you lose yourself and forget all of your problems. But Tara was not sure if Kennedy felt the same way. If kissing her would only make things more complicated. She had to ignore those thoughts and focus on something else. It was harder now that Kennedy had moved a little closer. Close enough for her to wrap one arm around her frame and pull her in.
"N-no, it doesn't make me uncomfortable at all", she replied with a smile as she herself moved a bit closer herself. She reached for the popcorn and placed it in between them to make it more accessible. The movie was still playing, but she had no idea what was going on anymore. "I d-don't know what I would do if I had God's power. Help people. F-find homes for all those animals in the shelter. F-fix your arm." She smiled again, and without really thinking things through, she placed her head on Kennedy's shoulder. Hands still clasped together. "This is nice."
Call @ Tara
Anya: Just wait â it won't be long now. I've gotten the go-ahead from all of you. [Now that she has permission from Damien, Cordelia, and Tara to reverse the wish, all she needs to do now is actually reverse it. It's a large wish, and not altogether /vengeful/ in the way D'Hoffryn would most likely prefer, so she'd have to make moves to slip it under the radar. Do it at a time when he wasn't likely to notice, like during a coffee break.] Oh, and one more thing. Don't tell anyone we spoke. Uh, not that it would make a huge difference since I'm a complete stranger that nobody knows, but, you know, professionalism and all that. If anybody asks how you regained your hearing, just chalk it up to your own magic, okay?
Tara: A-alright. I can be patient [She can't stop smiling. This is just too good to be true. She wants to thank her. Not the creepy voice that she is hiding behind, but her personally. Tell her that she knows who she is and that it doesn't matter. That she won;t tell anyone because she can trust her. But Tara respects her wishes and decided to still play along and treat her like a total stranger] I won't mention it to anyone kind stranger. Thank you so much for your help. If I ever find out who you are, I shall give you a gift of some kind.
Call @ Tara
Anya: [Lets the silence hang for a second, making sure that Tara is absolutely sure of her decision. It's a big choice to make, and indecisiveness would hardly surprise her â she isn't sure what she'd do herself in Tara's place, honestly â but she sounds as sure as a person can be of where she wants to be. Really, it's quite admirable. It's difficult to come back to Earth and then make the decision to leave it again, she supposes, and Tara's one of the lucky ones, with people like Kennedy to support her all of the way. People cared when she died and came back.] Okay. Good choice. Cordelia opted to stay here too, you know. I guess there's something to be said for staying on Earth. There are friendly people, and stores where you can customise your frozen yoghurt. Though... maybe both of those things exist in heaven, too; I'm not sure. [Pauses. Her tone sobers as she regroups her thoughts.] You thought your wish over. Not that many people do. So I don't think you'll regret it. [Frustratingly enough, she finds herself hoping she doesn't.]
Tara: [It was a very big decision to make. At the end of the day, Tara knows that staying here on earth would be more beneficial. Not only would she be getting the chance to live again, but she could never abandon the people she loved. The first time had not been her choice. Warren's bullet had made that decision for her. It's her time now to right that wrong. She couldn't be more grateful to Kennedy and Anya for giving her the opportunity to be herself again] That's great. Maybe now I can have the chance to meet her. A-and we can't forget about ice cream with sprinkles and puppies. N-not together, of course. [She never had the opportunity to meet the infamous Cordelia Chase, and the prospect of doing so now brought a smile to her face] I won't regret it. Is there anything else I need to do? Or will it just go poof?

She curled her fingers around Taraâs and gave her her best smile when Tara turned her head to look at her. She didnât have words, but they somehow seemed unnecessary right now.
Tara could not hide the excitement on her face. She could not stop smiling and for a moment she felt like actually singing and twilling around like a little kid. This was everything she wanted. And to think that she had once lost hope that this day would ever come. Now that it was here, all those moments of solitude and detachment from the word seemed like a distant memory. Just an echo and nothing more. That waking up in some alley surrounded by darkness, not knowing if she was back on earth or if she was suddenly in some hellish dimension. She did remember opening her eyes and looking up at this light post for what seemed like hours. The first moment of lucidity, when she realized that she was actually a ghost. That two years had gone by like a whisper and that all the people who knew her had moved on with their lives. That her grave was buried under tons of rumble back in Sunnydale. The days that melted into one another as she dragged herself along a world she didn't understand anymore.Â
And then, Kennedy came along and like a light at the end of a very dark tunnel, guided Tara along. She brought her back to this world, from the dead, from the obscurity of her own mind. She gave her something that she thought was forever lost -hope. And now, just as she had promised her, Tara was herself again and there was nothing to hold her back. She could finally start letting go of her past and start looking into the future. A future that was looking brighter my the minute. And she wanted to share that joy with Kennedy, since she was the one responsible for most of it. "I could never thank you enough", she said to her as the initial credits began to appear on the screen. And it was true. She felt like there was little to nothing she could give Kennedy in return that would have as much significance as what she had done for her. "You gave me my life back. I'll never forget it"
She find;t want to make things awkward, so she turned her attention to the images on the screen. Jim Carrey and his goofy smile and over the top personality. Jennifer Aniston with her golden hair and sparkling eyes. The funny punchlines and special effects, and of course, there was Morgan Freeman as God. "I always pictured God as being a woman", she laughed as she enjoyed the taste of the buttery popcorn. She could feel Kennedy's eyes locked on hers for a few moments before they turned away, and it made all the blood rush to her cheeks. Of course, she tried to ignore it and focus on what was happening in the movie when in reality she was more interested in what Kennedy was thinking. Maybe she had something on her face or something and Kennedy did not know how to tell her. Wouldn't that be hilarious? If Anya had returned her hearing but had given her a horn or a third eye or something? No, that wasn't it. Kennedy would have said something right away.Â
The popcorn bowl was sitting between them on the table, and when she reached to grab some her hand brushed against Kennedy's. Kennedy apologized right away, but Tara had liked it. It only lasted a few seconds. Not enough for it to register on any radar, but it had caused Tara stomach to flutter. Butterflies with gigantic wings were flying frantically inside of her belly. And it only got worse, when moments later, Kennedy's hand reach her own - interlocking their fingers. Her breath was caught in her throat, as her own fingers closed around her hand. She could feel the warmth of her palm on her skin. Was she shaking now? She probably was - a little. There was a loud ringing inside of her ears now, and her vision was starting to blur. She licked her lips and tried to say something, anything , but no words came out. Instead, she decided to sit there and enjoy the movie and the holding hands. It was nice and Tara had missed being cared for.Â
Call @ Tara
Anya: [Panic briefly sets over her. Kennedy'd told Tara that she was helping? A second later and it all turns to relief; Kennedy'd presumably kept her identity safe, referring to her as just a "friend".] Oh, that part doesn't matter. There'll be some unspecified magical shenanigans and then the jinni's catch-22'll turn into a catch-zero. What matters... is what I'm calling you about now. You've got a choice. A big one. [She doesn't know how much Kennedy's told her, so she starts from the beginning.] You can be corporeal without the deafness, and stay right here. Or! You can go back to a heaven dimension for good. [Adds this as an afterthought.] Straying from the point here, but I think I know which one Kennedy's angling for.
Tara: [Has a little bit of trouble understanding Anya through that dreadful apparatus she is using to disguise her own voice. So, she perks up her ears and squints her eyes. As if that simple gesture would make the voice sound just a little more clear and a lot less muffled] O-of course. Magic. [Because she knows nothing about magic and its repercussions apparently] I'm all ears [Oh, she has a choice. Tara is not sure if she likes the sound of that, but waits for Anya to explain to her what that was. When she finally hears it, that lump in her throat seems to grow a few inches wider. Heaven? She could return to heaven and be at peace. It's a nice sentiment. She knows what she wants, though. Even if its scary. She wants to stay and get a second chance at life. She wants to get to know Kennedy and spend time with Dawn. Time that was once ripped away from her. She wants to find love and happiness here on earth, even if she runs the risk of stumbling and finding heartache instead. She wants to live] I ... [She clears her throat and takes a deep breath before answering.] I want to stay here.
Call @ Tara
Anya: [Makes sure the device's coupler is properly fitted over the cell phone before she continues. It's difficult to ascertain whether Tara sounds nervous because of the voice scrambler or because she's receiving an unexpected call from a blocked number.] A friend of a friend. I'm helping Kennedy reverse the... big ol' bungle she made of her wish to the jinni. [Pauses and regains her professionalism. It's vital that Tara doesn't recognise her voice; enough people know she's in town already.] Which means talking with everyone affected, which means calling you. So.
Tara: [Waits for a respond, and for a moment all she can hear from the other side are weird shuffling noises. Then, the voice starts to speak again and her words begin to make perfect sense to Tara. Of course. This was Anya. Kennedy told her that Anya wanted to help with this jinni situation but in secret. That she didn't want anyone to know that she was involved. This was her trying to be inconspicuous. Alright, she would play along] Right, she told me she had a, uhm, 'friend' that wanted to help out. [She is smiling now. Part of her missed Anya's crazy antics] She d-din't say just how you were going to help though.
Call @ Tara
Anya: [Clears her throat. She's had her fair share of practice at this whole anonymous-benefactor thing by now. From the slight stammer on the other end, she surmises that Kennedy's given her the right number, but checking never hurts.] Am I speaking to Tara Maclay? [Also, she realises, asking in such a manner rather than indicating she recognises her voice straight off the bat preserves her anonymity. Hopefully the voice scrambler is doing its job in that department too.]
Tara: [Is taken by surprise when she hears the strange and creepy voice at the other end wanting to talk to her. She feels a small lump on her throat and takes a small breath before answering] Y-yes. Who-who is this? [It dawns to her that maybe, just maybe she should have hung up instead of telling the strange voice who she was. Last thing she needs right now is to have some crazy stalker calling her and asking her questions about her favorite scary movie]
Metric - âHelp Iâm Aliveâ
Itâs nice if you like, dull and boring. Still, canât complain I guess.Â
If you would like sometime, I could help show you around?
It could be worse, I guess. At least this is not some ghost town. You still get to meet new people every day. And that would be very nice of you, thanks.Â
Yes I have, and yourself?
Not very long at all. Still finding my way around actually. It's nice though.Â

The look Tara was giving her alone scared Kennedy enough to think that something really wrong had happened. So when Tara rushed over to her and gripped her shoulders, something like fear and bile bubbled in her stomach and throat, causing her mouth to gape. But then it wasnât fear that Tara was expressing, was it? Kennedy felt something stirring within her, but it wasnât the fear anymoreâ it was ascending hope. Say something, anything. Kennedyâs eyes searched Taraâs quickly as she looked up to her. Had it worked? Was she fixed? Could Tara hear Kennedy again? And hope fully everyone else. She cleared her throat. âUuuhhâŠhey there. Popcornâs ready,â she said, giving a half smirk up to Tara. She watched her eyes light up, like matches being lit. Beaming, shimmering. So blue. She blinked, pulling her gaze away before she got lost. âDid it work?â she asked again at Taraâs stark silence. She was just smiling and staring at Kennedy, like it was the first time sheâd seen her in a long time. âCan you hear me?â
A nod from Tara and Kennedy felt her own heart beating faster, her body filling with air. For a moment she felt like she was floating. âIt worked!â she exclaimed, a smile plastering itself on her face, from ear to ear. Without really giving it a thought, Kennedy threw her arm out and hugged Tara. It hurt a little, but that wasnât what she focused on. This was their first hug. Their first contact, really. Besides when Tara had helped Kennedy not die when they were attacked by a vamp, they hadnât really interactedâ Kennedy had guessed it was because Tara didnât want to get her hopes up only to have them dashed if she had to go back to being a ghost. It was a sad thought, one that Kennedy was determined to prove wrong. And now she had. Tara was corporeal, alive, and could hear her again. That was definitely something to hug about. She pulled away and rubbed the back of her head, feeling heat rising in her cheeks. âIt worked,â she repeated, quieter and less erupting this time. âIâm so glad.â
She didnât know what else to say. Or do. Tara looked so absolutely happy it was contagiousâ like glitter. Kennedy smiled again and pulled down a bowl. âShall we get back to movie night?â she asked, pouring the popcorn into the bowl and holding it out to Tara. âI hope you realize, now that you can hear me talk again, Iâm gonna gab your ears off. I have this bad habit of being a peanut gallery for movies Iâve already seen,â she joked, following Tara as they headed for the living room. âBut for you, I promise I wonât be too annoying.â
If Tara could hear her again, that probably meant that Cordelia and Damien were healed, too. Eagerly, she looked down at her arm, as if waiting for some flag to pop up and say âoh yeah, youâre a slayer againâ or âsurprise! your armâs not broken anymoreâ. But Nothing. She didnât feel any different, didnât feel like she was healing faster. Though, she wasnât sure she would feel anything. Sheâd felt something strong and powerful when sheâd first become a slayer, but losing her powers hadnât felt like anythingâ maybe them coming back hadnât either? It was the best she could hope for. There was a tingling in her fingers and she looked back at her wrapped cast again, slightly anxious. Focus on the now, she told herself. If theyâre back, youâre still injured. Letâs just watch a movie with Tara and worry about that later. But god, she did hope her slayerness was back.
Kennedy's eyes were wide and for a moment she looked terrified. As if Tara had just lost her mind or something worse. It was for a brief moment though, because once Kennedy realized what was happening, she relaxed and her face appeared more calm. Then, she spoke. Just a few simple words about popcorn. Nothing special. However, it was the best things Tara had heard all day. Her smile grew and her eyes blinked away a few happy tears as Kennedy wrapped her arms around her. She welcomed it, and returned the hug with enthusiasm. "I heard you! I heard you Kennedy!" So Anya had done it!
Tara was starting to think that it would never actually happen or that if it did, that it would tai some time. But here she was, alive and with her hearing intact. Tara could not remember the last time she felt this happy and excited before. Even when she became corporeal at Dawn's house, she could feel this way because she had discovered that she was not able to hear Dawn's words. Now, everything was alright. Nothing seemed to be going wrong or backfiring. Still, there was this echo at the back of Tara's head that was screaming at her to stop celebrating s soon, but she couldn't help herself. This was all she really wanted.
The smell of popcorn filled her nostril, and so she released Kennedy from her embrace took a few awkward steps back from her. She didn't want to linger on the hug for too long and make her feel weird. Her mind was suddenly going a million miles an hour. She had her life back, and she had Kennedy and Anya  of all people, to thank for this. She really had no clue what she would be doing right now if it wasn't for the woman standing in front of her. As she watched her pour the popcorn into a bowl, she realized just how much all of this had meant to her.
One moment, she was sitting alone in some hotel room feeling hopeless and with absolutely no idea how to make things work. The next thing she knew, she was moving in a nice apartment with her new friend who seemed to stop at nothing to make things better for her. Tara had to stop and wonder why. Why did she do all of this for someone she hardly even know. Her broken arm was a direct consequence of Kennedy trying to help her. To fix her. Her slayers powers were gone because she wished for her to be corporeal and this was the price she had to pay. She had sacrificed so much for her already, and all Tara had to give in return was her friendship. Somehow, it didn't feel like enough.
âI hope you realize, now that you can hear me talk again, Iâm gonna gab your ears off. I have this bad habit of being a peanut gallery for movies Iâve already seen." The more Tara heard her voice, the happier she felt. "No, please. Talk all you want. I don't think I could ever get tired of hearing you." she was not even aware of what she was saying anymore, but she didn't care. They were alive, and they could have long conversations now without the use of a cell phone. It was wonderful. It didn't occur to her, however, that her slayer powers might have returned. She felt a little selfish for just thinking about herself and not even ask about her and how she was feeling. "Are you feeling any different? If Anya fixed my hearing, then she definitely fixed your slayer issue, right?" I mean, why wouldn't she? Why would Kennedy make a deal with Anya to get Tara back to normal and not herself? Maybe she did have her powers back and she would finally start to heal and be as good as new in no time.
"I'm ready for this movie if you are. I'm excited for it actually, because its Jim Carrey and he always makes me laugh. And now, I can hear you laugh. It couldn't be more perfect." She grabbed the sodas and made her way to the living room. Kennedy was right behind her with the popcorn. Tara took a seat on the couch and reached for the remote control, turning on the television. Kennedy had figured out how to stream the movie directly to their television. The wonders of technology! Just another thing she had missed by being dead. The discovery of netflix and television on demand. "How many times have you watched this?" She asked as she stretched her hand towards the bowl on Kennedy's lap to get a handful of buttery popcorn.Â
Itâs quite all right, I suppose. Iâm Clare, Clare Hewitt.Â
It's nice to meet you Clare. Have you lived here long?Â
Darling, thereâs no need to stutter. Speak up, I donât bite.
Oh, sorry. It's not really caused by you. It's just a habit. I'm Tara by the way.
How did you spend your birthday?
Kennedy and I made chocolate chip cookiesÂ
Call @ Tara
Anya: [Dials Tara's number, waiting for the 'click' of her picking up. Tara, unlike Cordelia, would recognise her voice straight off the bat as soon as she started speaking, so Anya'd decided to resort to more desperate measures. A voice glamour was incredibly hard to acquire, and hardly worth the magic, so she'd gone with a piece of classic human technology instead: a voice encryptor, like on the cop shows. She'd bought it on eBay, and it fit right in her pocket, just as the advertising had claimed; now it is attached to the body of her phone, ready to scramble whatever she says into an unrecognisable tone.]
Tara: [Sits around the apartment doing some light reading when she hears her phone buzz on the coffee table. She places closes the book and places it on her lap before reaching for her cellphone. There is no name and she doesn't recognize the number. Part of her is unsure if she should even answer, but she does so anyways.] H-hello?
text @ willow
Tara: I suppose you found her and everything is alright?
Tara: Kennedy and I are making cookies.
Tara: I would invite you, but I'm sure you and your girl would like some time alone on your first night back
Willow: Tell Kennedy I say hey! I didn't mean to leave her out, it's just been sort of crazy coming back.
Willow: And you're um, probably right about that last bit...
Tara: I will. I'm sure she understands
Tara: I shall levee you to it then. Maybe now that everything is back to normal, we can plan our little dinner adventure?
Tara: But we can talk about it some other time
