“No, other people wish to know that, when I asked you if you are happy, that is exactly what I meant,” she firmly explained because it was the truth. Whatever happened was between them, and whatever her cousin wanted to tell her was at her own discretion. “What happened, is not important to me, your well being is at the end of the day, what I wish to know of, hence why asked.”
Donna could not help rolling her eyes, “besides anyone who believes that there was underhanded trickery does not know of your temper. I remember when you left for the Free Cities.”
It had -when the first rumor reached her- worried her. There was also a tiny part of her that wondered if this was another situation like Queen Daenerys, who was happy with her three lovers. Mostly, Donna was just worried for people’s hearts, one of her biggest faults, or greatest strength as Guy was fond of telling her. But, the one thing that filled her with dread, kept her at night, was the fear that they would be plagued with more bloodshed. Would there be war? Donna was tired of wars, of the sound of clashing swords and angry cries.
“People will always talk, regardless,” she added with a shrug, after all, she was Lady Paramount, but she was still the runt of the family and she knew better than to think that the rumors about her had lessened in any shape. Probably more now that she had successfully been saved from becoming a Florent. “As you are well aware, I am quite foolish, I like to trust people,” she looked down at Allison, who continued to slumber peacefully.
“If I were unhappy in any fashion, I would not linger here,” Dinah reminded, a laugh creeping up into her voice. She had shown as much years prior, taking leave and losing herself along the foreign shores of Essos. She might have stayed there if the Vale had not called her home. Dinah had been particularly fond of the Free City of Myr during her time spent traversing abroad. “You know so yourself.”
After all, Donna had already said as much in her own sort of way. Had Dinah been unhappy in anything that was occurring, she would have petitioned Queen Daenerys to have her marriage stricken and she would have returned to the Vale to rule. Such was not the case, though. And, Dinah didn’t want any individual to believe, for even a moment, that she was a woman merely turning a blind eye to her husband’s doings.
Such things dishonored her, they dishonored Helaena, and they dishonored Oliver as well, though he was loathe to agree to such a thing. Dinah had every intent to set the record straight to any who thought to broach the subject. She had been just as involved in approaching Helaena at court as Oliver had. If someone wished to lay blame, they would have to blame her as well.
“There’s no foolishness in trusting others,” Dinah reminded. She had trusted her fair share of individuals., but never without hesitance. “To trust everyone would be foolish.”
Slipping one of her fingers beneath Serena’s little palm, Dinah untangled her daughter’s fingers from where they’d become wrapped in her hair. “I hope you realize that this is not your dilemma to solve, Donna,” she went on, her formalities gone. “It is not your job to smooth the tensions that are between your family and Oliver. Lord Tyrell is in his right to be angered over our involvement with Heleana. All the same, Oliver is in his own right to be angered over the treatment that Helaena was given while she was Lady of Highgarden. I am allowed to be angered over it as well.” Dinah had thought Lady Olenna and Lady Alerie would have learned by then to turn from their plans for influence and power. It seemed that such a desire did not die easily, though.
The tensions between House Tyrell and Queen Daenerys, as well as Helaena, were another entity entirely that Dinah didn’t broach. She trusted the queen to see to such tensions as needed. Dinah held a great deal of respect for her and viewed her as a more than competent ruler.
