jackie is still so... jackie , and it causes something inside shauna's chest to break a bit. she knows how cruel they can be out here to her , this idea that her ( ex ) friend is useless. but sometimes shauna thinks jacke's the only person reminding her who she is , who they all are. it's a talent so singular she's scared to think of what they would become without it here to guide them back to what still exists outside the wilderness.

" oh yeah ? and what were you , jackie taylor , gonna do in the face of a vicious beast ? " and for a moment , shauna smiles and it's like they never fought. that string that connects the two of them snug around her waist. safety in a harness. but the smile fades too soon , the cold snuffing out any warmth. and that string feels more like a noose.

" i don't hate you , " she curls further in on herself , words muffled against her knees. it feels selfish to admit , like it would be kinder to play into this role of enemy. but it's not so simple. why isn't it simple ? she can't even look at jackie , eyes glued to the sky like the stars will protect her heart from whatever this is. " you hate me. "

"in the face of a BEAST? i think right now, i'm hungry enough that i might actually just look it in the fact and scream. who knows?" and for a moment, it was normal. for just a moment, they were who they always were. but moments break just like friendships and when it passed, jackie still found herself in front of a stranger. because isn't that what SHAUNA told her? that maybe she didn't even know her AT ALL?

"i don't hate you." and it was said so sincere that it almost caught jackie by surprise. so much for guarding her heart, keeping shauna at arms length for the rest of her life. but jackie could never -- she was too soft, too sentimental to let this friendship die in the snow. "i hate what you did. i hate how you made me feel," came the truth, teeth clenching after she spoke so as to fight the familiar feeling of tears. she was too easily brought to them -- she had no choice but to thicken her skin. the last thing jackie wanted to feel in front of shauna was pathetic.

there was a pause before jackie took an experimental step towards the other, testing the waters to see if it might be alright to sit next to her. shauna was hurting and even though jackie was at the center of that pain, her only goal was to comfort. wasn't that always her intention?

"i'll never understand why you did it until you tell me and, like, i REALLY don't expect you to." the truths shauna had thrown in her face before were still too hard to face, jackie constantly licking her wounds and trying to push forward. but those words replayed in her mind every second of every day. "i just figured you HAVE to hate me. everything you said... i had to quote a MOVIE to be mean to you, shauna." they both knew that and honestly? it was kind of FUNNY in hindsight.

"but everything you said... like, i just don't understand shauna. but i'm willing to listen now if you're willing to tell me the truth."

the only one she trusted. god, what kind of life was that for a high school aged anyone? let alone someone with jackie's pressures. a hand ran through the once spiky dark hair that now messily hung around his ears and eyes. he nodded once and smiled slightly at her taking the jacket. a little bit of parallel there in that, accepting something that was an extension of himself. even if he couldn't console her. that would have to do for him.

"that's no way to live, but...i get how it tumbles into that," his body relaxed slightly against one of the shelves, hearing it creak. there was so much on her shoulders, it was hard to hear. not that it turned him away, but it made charlie a little on edge. like he wished he could do something to help her. something more than listen. but that wasn't his place. an ear and a shoulder, that's what she seemed to need. and some time away from everyone else, clearly. he just got lucky on that part.. "we're here now though. not many of those people are out here. it's mostly out in the open now. what do you want to do?"

that made his face shift, the way she talked about her own problems. head cocked, the lips turned ever so slightly down. "a problem is a problem is a problem. it's not stupid, your feelings are valid and should be felt. as for me not understanding, there's truth in that. i can empathize though. emp-...sympathize? i understand what you're going through without having gone through it myself is what i mean. you don't sound pathetic, jackie. really."

putting everything out on the table was such a relief, an untangling of string that had gotten all fucked up and twisted inside of herself. but she still didn't feel BETTER -- maybe because there was no solution yet. shauna was still upstairs hating her, jeff was still in new jersey not giving a shit about her, everyone out here still despised her for not being as good as them. every second of every day made jackie feel as though she were drowning -- like she was screaming in the middle of a crowded room and nobody cared enough to pay attention. stupid, she thought. they had more important things to worry about, but this is what took the forefront of her mind.

as he spoke, she pulled the jacket around her as though for protection. it was roomy and warm, made her feel safe. nothing could get her right now. she could feel her heartbeat begin to calm and shoulders slowly start to relax. a good beginning. "it was just supposed to be high school. once i graduated, it was all going to change -- shauna thinks that i made her some sidekick or something but, like... i really thought she wanted the things that i did, y'know? i really thought she wanted to go to rutgers too, that's why i fought SO hard to make our future perfect. it's like i really have no idea who she is. i'm not sure i ever did." everything jackie did had been for shauna -- their future, giving the other her own rations to keep her from passing out. hell, before she knew who the father of her child was, jackie told herself that this was THEIR burden now. their problem. she would've been there for whatever shauna needed.

"i want to go HOME." it was quiet and childish and true. she was sure he felt the same way -- didn't they all? she wanted to go to sleep tonight and wake up in her rose covered bed, go to school in her best friend's car. god, she wanted. "both work. you can empathize AND sympathize," jackie told him with a soft smile, a huff of a laugh on her lips. "i'm sorry for, like, unloading all of this on you. you're just... the only person here who doesn't seem to hate my guts." a beat. god, she was so pissed. "which, honestly, is like -- fucking crazy considering i'm the person who DIDN'T trip on shrooms and try to have an orgy and then try to kill a guy. but hey, maybe that's just ME."
