Naming a South Asian Character
“I need a name for a South Asian character”
We’re going to need a little more information than that…

That’s a lot of languages, right?
Names in South Asian cultures are primarily dictated by religion and language. While there’s some overlap between cultures, we can make an educated guess of someone’s ethnicity & religion based on their name. For example:
Simran Dhillon … is a Punjabi Sikh.
Priyanka Ghosh … is a Bengali Hindu
Maya Srinivasan … is a Tamilian Hindu.
Harsh Patel … is a Gujarati Hindu.
Amin Usmani … is a Muslim from a traditionally Urdu speaking community.
Teresa Fernandes … is a Goan Christian.
Behind the Name is a good place to start looking as they state the specific language the name is from. As for religion, there are more factors to consider.
Sikhs
Sikh first names are gender neutral. The 10th Sikh guru designated Singh (meaning lion, for men) and Kaur (meaning heir to the throne, for women) as Sikh surnames. These surnames were designed to be equalizers within Sikh communities. However, many Sikhs keep their Punjabi surnames (many of these surnames are now primarily associated with Sikhs) and use Singh and Kaur as a middle name (eg. Ranjit Kaur Shergill, Amrit Singh Cheema). More devout Sikhs use only Singh and Kaur or use the same format legally but do not share their surnames.
Sikh first names are derived from gurbani (Sikh holy texts), so they are often uniform across cultures. Most Sikhs who aren’t Punjabi use Singh & Kaur or cultural surnames in the same format. The latter is usually seen among Afghan & Delhiite Sikh communities. While most changed their surnames to Singh & Kaur, some families still kept the surnames they had before they converted from Islam and Hinduism (eg. Harpreet Singh Laghmani, Jasleen Kaur Kapoor).
If you’re stuck on a surname for a Sikh character, Singh for men and Kaur for women is the safest way to go regardless of ethnicity.

Christians
South Asian Christians naming conventions depend largely on who brought Christianity to the region and when. For example, Christianity was largely brought to Goa by Portuguese Catholics so you’ll see Portuguese surnames, while many Christians in the Seven Sister States didn’t change their names. South Asian Christians will also often have Christian first names, either in Portuguese or in English.
Hindus, Jains, castes and gotras
Hinduism is the majority religion in India and the South Asian region overall. A key thing that many newcomers overlook when writing about Hindus is that rather like feudal Europe, a person’s last name can also tell you what their family used to do because of the caste system. Both Hindus and Jains employ gotras (or lineage systems) designed to keep people from the same patrilineal line from marrying each other. Thus, if your Hindu character is a Vaishya (tradesman/ merchant class), but you have chosen a last name for them related to farming, or if your Kshatriya (warrior) character has a last name that means bureaucrat, you’ve made a mistake. Most Hindus and Jains will have last names derived from Sanskrit, or a language with Sanskrit roots.
A note on middle names: in South India, Hindus will often use the father’s first name for the child’s middle name.
For what it is worth, South Asia is hardly the only region to have these particular features. Japanese society until the end of the Edo era was heavily segregated by caste, and to this day, many families with samurai last names occupy relative positions of privilege compared to other castes, even though the Japanese caste system ended with the Meiji Restoration.
A note of caution: Baby name websites tend to be inaccurate for Hindu names, often confusing Farsi and Arabic-derived Urdu names with the more traditional Sanskrit-derived names. Behind the Name is by far the most accurate website, but it doesn’t hurt to check multiple sources. For Hindu and Jain surnames associated with different castes, regions and gotras, Wikipedia is surprisingly thorough.
Muslims
Islam is the majority religion in Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as the second largest religion in India, but the differing ethnicities and arrival periods of Muslims in South Asia over the course of history can have a significant impact on a character’s name. For example, think of when your character’s family will have arrived in South Asia or converted to Islam:
During the Delhi Sultanate, when Hindustani would have been spoken?
Under the Mughals when Persian was more common?
Are they from Bangladesh and thus speak Bengali?
Do they have ancestors from Afghanistan or Swat Valley, and thus have Pashto last names?
Does the family speak Urdu?
All of these will impact what their name might reasonably be. As a general rule, Muslims will have last names that are in Farsi/ Persian, Urdu, Arabic and Bengali. Bangladeshi Muslims may have Hindu names (both first and last) as well.
Buddhists
When discussing Buddhists in South Asia, we are primarily talking about Nepal and Sri Lanka. The majority languages in these countries are Nepali and Sinhala, respectively. Both languages are part of the Indo-Aryan language family, and like many Indo-Aryan languages, show heavy Sanskrit influence.
Others
Don’t forget that India also has a large number of lesser known minority religions, including Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Tibetan Buddhism and a host of indigenous religions.
Judaism: There are a number of historical Jewish enclaves in India, as the result of specific waves of migration. Like South Asian Muslim names, Jewish last names will vary depending on the ethnicity and arrival period for each particular wave of Jewish diaspora.
Zoroastrianism: People who practice Zoroastrianism are likely to have Farsi last names.
Tibetan Buddhism: Tibetan Buddhists will obviously have Tibetan names and are often a part of the Tibetan diaspora who entered India as refugees during the Chinese government’s invasion of Tibet.
In Conclusion
An in-depth coverage of name etymology in South Asia would probably be the size of an encyclopaedia. The above is hardly exhaustive; we haven’t scratched the surface of the ethnic and linguistic variations in any of the South Asian countries displayed on the maps above. We hope, however, that it motivates you to research carefully and appreciate the cultural diversity South Asia has to offer. Just like in any setting where issues of lineage are plainly displayed by a person’s name, names in South Asia tell stories about where a person is from, what language they speak, and what their ancestors might have done, even if this has little bearing on the character themselves. It may seem a little elaborate to try and imagine the ancestors of your character before you even decide who your character is, but the reality is that most South Asians know these things instinctively, and whether or not you do your due diligence will be part of how we judge your work.
Name a thing to fight over, and South Asians have probably fought over it at one point or another, whether it be religion, ethnicity, language, or caste. However, one thing many South Asians have in common is pride in our individual origins. Respecting this love of identity will be invaluable as you plan your story.
At the end of the day, there is no substitute for actually talking to people who share your character’s background. We will always recommend having someone from the community you’re writing about check your naming.

All of which saw 85 to 99 percent population losses in 2 or three generations after the others.
Multiple factions if European interests killed all the natives they could and destroyed all the culture and history they could. They were not limited by gender, language, religion, culture, ethnic group, nationality, geography, or time period; just every single person they could.
That’s not even genocide, it’s apocalypse.

When Columbus realized the pigs they brought were getting the Islanders sick he arranged to loose as many as possible ahead of them primarily into the Benne region, I believe. Cortez loaded sickened corpses into Tenochtitlan’s aqueducts, Spain deliberately targeted the priests of Mexican society first because they knew it would severely undermine the public ability to treat disease. When the post Incan city states developed a treatment for malaria, the Spanish deliberately targeted the cities producing the quinine treatment and made it illegal to sell it to non-christians. The Spanish took all the sick and forced them at sword-point to go back to their homes instead of to the sick houses or the temples throughout the new world, and forced anyone who wasn’t sick to work in the mines or the coin factories melting and pressing their cultural treasures down into Spanish coins. The English were just as bad, they started the smallpox blankets. A lot of the loss was not deliberate infections like this but it was preventable at a million different crossroads and every European culture took the opportunity to weaponize the plagues when they could.
They knew what they were doing, just cuz they didn’t know what germs were doesn’t mean they have some accidental relationship with it. Alexander the great used biological warfare after all, so it’s not like you can pretend the concept was alien to them, they wrote about it.
Besides they did plenty of old fashioned killing too, there were Spanish conquistadors that estimated their own personal, individual killings might have numbered over the ten thousands. They were sure they’d killed more than ten million in “New Spain” alone. They crucified people they smashed babies on the rocks, they set fire to buildings they forced women and children into and cooked their meals over the burning corpses, they loosed war dogs on people. They sold children into sex slavery to be raped by disease riddled pedos back in Europe and if taking their virginity didn’t cure the sick creeps the native children would be killed or sometimes sent back.
The English were just as bad, shooting children in front of their mothers and forcing them to mop their blood with their hair. Turning human scalps into currency. Feeding babies to dogs in front of their mothers and fathers. Killing whole villages and erasing them from their maps so that historians would think God had made it empty just for the English.
The Americans after them burned crops and drove several species of bison to extinction just to starve the plains tribes. They pushed the blankets too. On top of the wars of extermination and scalp hunting and concentration and laws defining natives as non-persons so that we’d never be protected by the Constitution.
And even if you wanna live in some dreamy fairytale where God just made a whoopsie and then there were no natives left, nobody forced them to erase our history. The Spanish burned every document they found to erase the literacy and literary tradition of the Central and South Americans. There are essentially three Aztec documents left and some excavated pottery, and some archeological inscriptions and that’s it. The single most advanced culture in math and anatomical medicine erased probably forever. Same to the Inca, the most advanced fiber and alloy engineers and economists gone forever. Nobody made them do that. Nobody forced the American colonizers to steal political technology and act like they invented democracy or sovereignty. Nobody forced them to build their cities on top of native ones and erase them from history forever. Baltimore was built on Chesapeake, which translates roughly to “city at the top of the great water” in most Algonquin tongues. My favorite example is Cumberland in Western MD, they didn’t even reshape the roads or anything, they paved the steps and walking paths natives had used for hundreds of years and now it’s almost impossible to drive cuz the streets are too narrow or steep. The culture that built them didn’t have horses. Phoenix AZ, called Phoenix cuz the settlers literally found an old city and “brought it back to life.” Did they save any history or cultural artifacts? No. Most cities on the east coast are like this. Nobody forced them to erase that history.
Colonizers are not innocent just cuz the germs did a lot of the work of the apocalypse.

I don’t really remember the exact mindset I was in when I wrote this but it was probably something like “ohhhmmff english lamguage cool”
What I love about trends like this is it demonstrates our adaptability when it comes to our medium of communication. Text communication by its nature runs the risk of being dry and boring and very difficult to use expressively by traditional means. But the difference between “I’m hungry” and “im hongry” is distinct and vivid. We’ve found playful, interesting, and fun ways to use what could’ve been an incredibly dull and boring and ‘same-y’ means of talking to each other.
We’re playful beings and I think this is one way we demonstrate that, and I guess I also just think that’s kind of adorable of us.

How to Play as Raven in DnD 5e
I’ve made a build for Raven before, but as with Zelda, I felt it was worth revisiting my original build. Raven was the second character I ever built, and while I think she works as a Theurgy Wizard, it was stretching things a bit to make her a healer when she only shows healing abilities on rare instances. However, I’ve actually found that there are two appropriate builds for Raven, and I want to give each one a fair evaluation. Normally, I’d list out all the build options then provide a formal build I see as the best all-around option. But, as Raven is my absolute favorite superhero, she gets special treatment, and thus, two totally separate builds. So, let’s meditate to suppress our joy as we delve once again into the build for Raven.
First up is race, and we’re obviously a Tiefling. But more specifically, we’re a Winged Bloodline Tiefling. My main reasoning for this is that in the 2003 Cartoon Network show, Raven tended to move around through flight or hovering a lot. Not to mention, having permanent flight saves Raven a 3rd level spell slot, especially if you choose to play Raven as a Warlock. As a Winged Bloodline Tiefling we get +2 CHA +1 INT a flying speed of 30 feet when not wearing heavy armor, and no subrace spells. I personally choose to ditch the literal physical wings and allow Raven to fly through levitation or lifting herself with her telekinetic powers.
For alignment, we’ll pick Neutral Good. Raven’s surprised and disgusted when she learns that Robin’s begun to commit crimes to gain Slade’s trust. She’s even the first titan to state that if Robin’s turned into a criminal, they have to take him down like any other crook, as much as it pains her to do so. Yet at the same time, she has no qualms using intimidation and revealing something horrible under her hood to get Gizmo to help the titans repair Cyborg when he’s corrupted with a computer virus. Thus, Neutral Good.
For background, Raven is an exile from Azarath, making her a Far Traveler, and also giving her the very helpful feats for Insight and Perception, making her good at reading people, and sensing things, both vital for a good empath character.
Going Rogue
One great thing with Multiclassing in 5e is that the final ASI comes at level 19 instead of level 20, meaning you’re free to take a 1 level dip into another class. While I wouldn’t recommend starting as a rogue, she should pick up a level of it at some point. The main reason being that it gives her another skill, and more importantly, it gives her expertise. Raven is an empath, able to sense the emotions and presence of other people. So by taking expertise in both Insight and Perception, even with a WIS mod of 0, she’s still rolling better Insight Checks than any proficient skill with a maxed out mod. Bards get expertise too, but not at level 1. So as much fun as it might be to give Raven Dissonant Whispers and Bane, it would just clutter up her build. If you feel you should start as a rogue for more skills, I’d pick up Intimidation, Insight, Perception, and your choice of Stealth, Sleight of Hand, or Acrobatics. Then take Cloistered Scholar for your background for proficiency in History and Arcana. While it provides Raven with better DEX saving throws, she loses all WIS saving throw bonuses, leaving her more vulnerable to magical effects.
Warlock Raven
It should come as no surprise that for our Warlock patron, we’ll be empowered by our daddy issues and picking the Fiend. Both Pact of the Tome and Pact of the Chain work for Raven, so it’s a matter of what bonuses you want to bestow upon her. To make this easier, I’ll list out the best Eldritch Invocation options for Raven, since you only get 8 and there’s plenty more than that which work for her.
Eldritch Blast Enchancements
Agonizing Blast: Take it. Don’t fight me on this, just take this Invocation. Grasp of Hadar: Great for control. Chasing someone? Hurt them and then pull them closer. Enemy just left a continuous AoE spell? Pull them right back into the blast zone. Flying? Pull them into the air toward you and watch them fall back to the ground. Wish it worked on objects too, but it doesn’t unfortunately. Though if your DM is cool with that, it’s basically an extended magical hand that also deals damage, and very in-character for Raven. Repelling Blast: Similar to the last point, you can push someone who’s walked out of your Hunger of Hadar right back into the affected area. Or just keep enemies away from you or your allies.
Pact of the Tome
Book of Ancient Secrets: You get two extra ritual spells. I recommend Find Familiar and Tenser’s Floating Disk. Eldritch Mind: Your high CON stat and Resilient Feat already gives you +10 or +11 on all CON saving throws, but now you roll with advantage on spell concentration saving throws. With this Invocation, broken concentration will become a forgotten relic of the past. Or at least much less common. Gift of the Protectors: As long as your party isn’t more than 6 people, you can protect literally anyone in your party from dying at least once. Once per long rest, the first of up to 5 people who have written their names in your book of shadows to fall to 0 HP retains 1 HP instead.
Pact of the Chain
Voice of the Chainmaster: You can see through your Shadow Raven’s eyes, speak with it telepathically (which I mean, it’s your soul so of course you can), and your familiar can deliver messages with your voice. Investment of the Chainmaster: Your familiar can gain a flying or swim speed, no longer needs to breath, its attacks become magical, and the familiar uses your spell DC for saving throws. Raven has sent her soul into space and under the sea, so this is perfect. Chainmaster’s Fury: Your familiar can now attack as a bonus action instead of an action, allowing your familiar to flank and support you in battle.
Bonus Spells and Extra Features:
Armor of Shadows: Just take it. permanent 16 AC. No questions asked. Ascent Step: It doesn’t make you fly, but it makes things float. Need to get something out of your way or stop something from falling? Boom. Unlimited utility spell. Eldritch Sight: Raven is an empath, so you could call this an extension of her sensory powers. Eyes of the Runekeeper: Raven’s a bookworm and has scoured ancient texts. This is a great way for her to flex her brain with such a low INT score. Ghostly Gaze: A lot of spells specify needing to see things, so being able to see through walls makes it super easy for Raven to teleport inside a fortress or castle, which flexes her magical kinda-sorta not really a rogue role.
After giving it some consideration, Raven’s final stat distribution I came up with was STR (8) DEX (14) CON (20) INT (10) WIS (10) CHA (20). You can play around with it all you like, but this is what I saw as the best possible distribution for Raven’s Warlock build.
For skills, Raven’s background as a Far Traveler gives us proficiency with Insight and Perception, great for a sensing empath. Then I’d recommend Arcana so you can be a magic know-it-all, and History to be an exposit faucet for your team. Otherwise, Religion works just as well as History. For your one Rogue skill, pick up Intimidation to make use of your high CHA stat, and put your expertise into Insight and Perception to make up for your lackluster WIS mod. This is not the only way to distribute her stats, of course. You can easily make it STR (8) DEX (14) CON (18) INT (10) WIS (14) CHA (20) but I felt that with her already having expertise in her main Wisdom skills that it would be better to put her attention on her CON stat, but if you’d rather improve her WIS I’m certainly not going to get in the way.

As you likely saw with Raven’s Spell List, the Warlock version of Raven is almost entirely a dedicated blaster with a few utility spells. She also has an unlimited access to Mage Armor that gives her a standing AC of essentially 16. Her HP is also much higher than the Wizard build provides. Between all of Raven’s spells upcasting to 5th level, her damage-focused spell list, her good AC and high HP means that Warlock Raven is the best choice if you want to be the magical muscle of your party. Taking the level in rogue does keep you from your 20th level captstone ability, but the expertise and bonus skill do make up for it at least somewhat in my opinion.
Wizard Raven
The recent Unearthed Arcana handed us a perfect subclass for Raven, the Psionics Wizard. With this subclass, Raven can keep enemies from getting mad at her when she casts Friends on them (not really a show or film power, but Comic Raven has shown the ability to change other people’s emotions), she can enter her thought form that lets her cast spells silently and without any requirements except gold costs and she resists melee damage as well as psychic damage in this form. She can add her Intelligence modifier to Psychic and Force spells, cast Telekinesis once per long rest without components or using a spell slot, and finally, her thought form improves to let her float, fly, and move through solid objects, working Raven’s astral bird form nicely into her build without having to use passwall.
We can achieve a very similar stat distribution to our Warlock build just with the casting stats flipped. STR (8) DEX (14) CON (20) INT (20) WIS (10) CHA (10). Like with the Warlock, we can alter it to so that WIS is 14 and CON is 18, but Wizards have even less health than Warlocks. That increase to her Wisdom score is a much steeper price here, as Raven’s 20 CON HP as a Wizard is about equal to Raven’s 18 CON HP as a Warlock.

As a Wizard, Raven becomes a lot more frail, but her wider selection of spells and larger pool of spell slots makes Raven a Swiss army knife of utility, meaning she can take a long rest and then cherry pick the right spells for the job ahead. This build also works better with her rogue build. Not mechanically necessarily, so much as abilities. Spells like Passwall and Knock are far more effective as a Wizard where there’s a lot more where that came from, allowing Raven to magically infiltrate places without hampering her spell slots nearly as much as a Warlock does. As a wizard, Raven’s far better at bypassing security, creating shields and barriers, teleportation, and dimension hopping.
Ultimately, which build you use depends on the player. If you want her to hit like a truck, pick Warlock. Raven’s the strongest member of her team for a reason. Between Eldritch Blast and Concentration spells, Warlock Raven can really pack a wallop, while having the HP and AC needed to be a real threat on the battlefield. Wizard Raven on the other hand sacrifices her high AC and HP in favor of more versatility and utility in her expansive spell list. She’s better at handling hazards and controlling the battlefield, but she’s not quite cut out for the front line as her Warlock counterpart.
The Crevasus - A sub-species of pegasus adapted to live deep in the chasms, far below the layers of mist. They’re wings, now all but featherless, have been re-purposed to be an additional set of legs. They use these to help traverse the steep walls and floors of the chasms.
They have developed other adaptions to cope with the incredibly dark environment: small amounts of bioluminescence, which they use to not only see with, but also to form and maintain social bonds. Larger eyes, or multiple eyes that capture infrared light, large, sensitive ears, and feet with 2-3 toes to help grip the walls are other common adaptions.
Their size varies from a small pony to average horse. The larger ones are slow and graceful, able to reach the mosses, lichens, and even fern-like plants that thrive in the low light and high-moisture environment. The smaller ones move quickly to chase small prey such as bugs and lizard-like vertebrates.
Crevasi tend to live solitary lives, but will occasionally congregate, or meet up with other individuals that they have met before. Rarely they will stay together in sibling pairs.
No human in the Sky Cowboys world has ever seen these. Only when man has the ability to survive the journey below the mist will they, and their unique ecosystem, be discovered.

The first time it happened was on the Ark.
Crawly had tried to sneak on board under cover of night to escape the rising waters, and been almost immediately discovered by Aziraphale. He was soaking wet, sprawled inelegantly on the deck, pretty defenseless all things considered, but Aziraphale magnanimously decided to hold off on the smiting on account of having had quite enough of death in the last few hours, even if Crawly’s demise wouldn’t be permanent. He did, however, give him a righteous ticking off, but tender mercies and all that.
When he was done listing all the reasons Crawly being on board was a terrible idea, Crawly looked up at him from his exhausted heap of robes and feathers, and said, “Don’t let anyone know I’m here, don’t interfere with the ineffable bloody plan, got it. Tell me there’s booze on board.”
