“I never said I was a prince. And I don’t pretend to be okay, we all know better anyway. I’m fucked up, and it’s none of anyone’s business why or just how much.”
He startled at her own conclusions about the stress that he mentioned, turning red as he did. “I–what? Why would you even say that? It obviously has nothing to do with anything, you’re just being entirely inappropriate–”
He could have gone on, but he heard what she said about his eye, and both of his narrowed. “I don’t know why you’d say something that specific when you’ve just met me and obviously know nothing about my eye. I had a procedure recently, and its after-effects have been affecting my eye. That’s all.”
And technically, he wasn’t lying about that.
"Mmmmmhm okay, ouji-sama! As you wish.” An innocent smile was pasted nonchalantly on her lips. “Or should I call you oji-san?” Nothing like a stupid pun to enhance the conversation. She reeked of childish humor but didn’t think much of it or really couldn’t care to. She found a suitable name to call the boy and was gonna stick with it like glue...well, until he told her his name. Or not.
Mission success! She had finally elicited an emotion from her newfound company! (Or one that wasn’t the broody expression he consistently wore). Continuing her frivolity, she gasped. “So it’s true, then? Our dear ouji-sama is having some issues down there? Oh, what shall we do?” She placed both of her hands on her face in exaggerated distress. “How will our country survive without a future heir?”
It only took a second for her to return to business. She lowered her hands from her face and opted for crossing them instead. “I’m asking because I don’t know. What kind of procedure was it?” He could tell her at least that, couldn’t he?

22. Lost in the middle of the woods
Having been practically raised in a war, it was odd for Shinoa to go for so long without using her scythe. She missed holding Shi-chan in her hands, swinging her skillfully in the air while simultaneously slashing vampires into oblivion. She would not be a Hiiragi if she didn’t at least long for the battlefield, for the destruction of the vampires. Actually, she was one of the few Hiiragi’s who stood furthest from the pack. The rest of her blood was busy caught up in politics and all that nonsense she wasn’t interested in. How could one be a soldier and a politician? Their army was quite misleading.
But given how peaceful Koi was, the young sergeant dared not disturb the peace and found reason in her decision to give Shi-chan a swing in the forest instead. Not many people ventured off from the center of Koi anyhow, which ensured both that she would not be seen and would not accidentally hurt anyone. After walking around and admiring the foliage for a bit, she settled into a clearing and took our her cursed gear.
It was quite something to be practicing in solitude with no real threats at hand, but at the same time, it was somehow relaxing. Shi-chan was, of course, ever-present, and the two spoke in her mind as the petite girl marked the air with the scythe. Hours passed by and she didn’t realize the setting of the sun. After returning the weapon to its miniatured form, Shinoa wandered back to where she thought was the edge of the woods…she wounded back in the same clearing. How could that be? She needed to get back before it got any darker. Would she even make it?
Then, as if some omnipotent being had heard her concerns, she saw a person, yes really a person!, from the corner of her eye. She ran up to the figure and realized that she recognized her. This was the cute girl she shopped with!
“Um!” She tapped her shoulder. “Remember me? Older sister?” She gave a small laugh. “Funny we’d meet again like this! I was just admiring nature for a bit…yes, how beautiful the plants are!” She gestured her head to the side. Her grip on the key-sized weapon tightened. “…but, I think I’m lost.”

Standing at yours’ front door at 3 in the morning
It was about time for her to have a proper conversation with her roommate. But unfortunately, she never got around to introducing herself. That left her somewhat stranded in cases of emergencies dealing with her room key. She never thought something like this would actually happen to her. After all, she was a responsible adult, retaining the qualities of a mature leader. Obviously.
But being responsible didn’t prevent mishaps and during the sergeant’s (really) early morning patrol of the city of Koi, she had lost her room key. She had no backup lying underneath a plant pot or a welcome mat, waiting for her when she got home. Maybe she would’ve had she actually talked with her roommate and laid out the logistics. From the looks of it, she had to resort to seeking external help and unhappily, she did.
Around five minutes had passed and Shinoa was still standing in front of someone’s apartment door, her fist hovering uneasily to knock. Maybe it was better to just wait out the night. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d stayed up outside. But, it seemed better for her to just knock and ask. After a few moments of hesitation, she finally succumbed and tapped the door with her fist, hoping it was loud enough for the apartment’s inhabitant to hear.

“It doesn’t matter what you’ve seen; you won’t like what you hear, and there’s no point to me saying it. The people who are responsible are dead; there is no more festering to be done.”
He paused, unsure at first how to explain Marie Antoinette syndrome without revealing too much. “It’s… the sudden whitening of the hair, usually under extreme amounts of stress. It was named after Marie Antoinette because it reportedly happened to her three separate times. Naturally, though, my hair is black, not that it’s been that way for awhile.”
“And as for my eye, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
"Hm, the cold-prince-with-a-dark-past type, huh? Those are the hardest to get through to.” She spoke softly, as if muttering to herself, but loud enough for anyone nearby to hear, including the white-haired mystery who stood not too far from her. “Pretends to be okay, but probably isn’t,” she continued her muttering front. Maybe she was pushing him too far. It wasn’t like she didn’t have a past she didn’t want to talk about either. But perhaps it was because she felt she understood him and she wanted to play the part of support. And above all else, it was the parallels she made in her head, him and Yuu-san...they were too much for her to simply ignore.
“Stress?” It couldn’t be school, could it? The only other thing she could think of...was torture. But for what? She let out an exaggerated sigh, as if she knew all his secrets and had come to her own conclusions. “It’s tough being a virgin, isn’t it? Stressful, yes, very stressful.” The sergeant nodded in agreement with herself.
He was trying to dodge her. But she was not going to let him have his way. “Does your eye ever occasionally change color to, say, a dark blood red? Maybe sometimes blood just comes out and rolls down your cheeks like tears?” An image of Yuu flashed in her mind’s eye, his bleeding eye, those terrifying wing-like structures protruding from his back. She would never forget it.

Although his initial reaction upon seeing the girl vanish into the aisle of clothing was a low, uncertain ‘huh’—what was the meaning of this? Where was she going? What was she up to? Both his confusion and gut urge him to stay in place, which he does—unmoving, waiting for the girl to come back… which she does, after a few moments of silence, with something else in hand.
“Ah, is that so?” he begins, setting aside the two blouses that he had picked up earlier while accepting the statement as if it were the unquestionable truth (he knew no better when it came down to fashion). With great care so as to not appear violent and be rude to the girl who had so kindly taken time to help him, he gently receives the article of clothing.
“Thank you for your help, big sister, I appreciate it! Eh… we can look for the skirt together, and then after this, could I do something to return the favor? Maybe get you something to eat, perhaps…”
She was very pleased when the twin-tailed stranger took the top. Calling her 'big sister’ had definitely released some of the sergeant’s mischievous tendencies, although lingering thoughts of her own dead sister threatened to ruin her fun. Well, who could blame her? It was hard not to play around with cute ducklings, like those in her squad. As the leader, it was her job to guide them in the right direction, or rather, the direction she wanted them to go, whatever that may be. In this case, she was going get this shy girl to show off her midriff! A quick analysis of her current outfit could lead anyone to believe she was wearing layers of clothing, covering just about every inch of her skin. Shinoa planned on getting her to dress just the opposite and was happy to hear that the girl wanted her presence extended.
She smiled. “You want to treat your big sister?” The word felt foreign and unfamiliar though she acted naturally. Shinoa never really knew the relationship between siblings but she made sure not to show it. “How thoughtful of you. Sounds like a date!”
"Let’s see...I’m sure I saw the skirt in this aisle...” She swiftly took the girl’s free hand and pulled her deep into the maze of clothing aisles.

[Henry was walking down the street when his eyes caught a glimpse of a somewhat interesting situation going on. He realized that the girl was trying to get something from the ledge and even though Henry could probably reach out and take it himself, he thought maybe she wouldn’t like other people taking it first and decided to do something different instead. He walked behind the girl and without warning but with a degree of care, he timed his movement so he grabbed the girl by the waist in the middle of a jump in order to lift her up more easily.]
Up you go! Hurry up though!
Had ten minutes passed already? It felt even longer. Was she better off actively seeking help rather than futilely attempt to resolve the height issue? Oh would she get those cats, for sure! She wondered if this torment would continue when she suddenly felt support from her waist lift her high enough that she could reach the ledge.
“Huh--?!”
Of course, she was stunned by the sudden boost in height but, following the (kind) stranger’s words, reacted quickly enough to grab Shi-chan’s shrunken form.
Volleyball | Open???

“Oh, uh, I was trying to play handball with a volleyball.”
She says this rather sheepishly as she scratches the back of her head, “Although the poor volleyball isn’t good for that being it was supposed to be for volleyball.”
Minako shrugs lightly, “But I didn’t know anyone who wants to possibly play with me, haha.”
Play? Were those games? The sergeant was unfamiliar with both handball and volleyball, whatever those were. Besides, she had no time to indulge in games...but she was curious. The subject of her mission was nowhere to be seen anyway and it wasn’t like she was restrained from doing other activities.
She tossed the ball lightly back to the girl. “So you need a partner to play?”

“This is Belladona, a downtown of Koi City, which is full of…some strange places. Rumored to be unsafe as well.”
According to the map she ever read before paid a visit to Cappuccino Apartment, that is. Not that she ever visited this downtown before–due to the bad rumors spread throughout the city–but in this state, she couldn’t help it.
“Unfortunately, in this unsafe downtown of Koi, this is the only place we can visit, and seek for any temporary shelter.”
“Unsafe how?” It wasn’t that Shinoa was afraid, but that somehow it was better for them to move somewhere else to carry out their conversation in case anything...attacked them per se. She had her weapon handy in its little trinket form so she’d be able to defend herself and the girl if need be.
“...how long have you been here? Are you by yourself?” The sergeant just realized that she had found this girl wandering alone. It wasn’t safe for her to be out and about in this supposedly dangerous area so she would stick with her until they were in a secured location.

“I should’ve known something freaky was up with this city…”
One moment Kamanosuke had been lying in his bedroom with the ceiling fan on full blast in an attempt to sleep off the heat. The next he knew, he had awoken on a patch of grass in an empty lot where his apartment should have been. His first instinct was to slice at the shadowy phantoms populating the area, though their lack of reaction proved it to be pointless. So he spent the next several hours exploring this soundless, warped version of Koi.
The situation was very inconvenient, but as a former mountain bandit, Kamanosuke had no shortage of survival skills. He spent the next couple of hours scouring Belladona’s abandoned shops, but found nothing useful. Eventually, he entered a nearby house and had barely begun searching the kitchen cupboards when another person’s voice and footsteps approached. He swiftly drew his chain sickle and emerged, pointing his blade at the girl.
“I found this place first, so back off or I’ll kill you!”
All of a sudden, a delicious aroma that hadn’t been there before wafted over to them.
“Wait, how’d that food get here? Aaahhh, who cares! I’m starving!!”
A step inside the seemingly harmless building proved Shinoa’s initial thoughts wrong. Suddenly a weapon was pointed her way and hostile words found themselves ringing quite harshly in the young sergeant’s ears. So there was someone here already. She was going to ask him for help but...his violent behavior may prove to be too troublesome for her to bother with.
But the moment she was about to peacefully leave, an enticing smell, like none she’d ever smelled before, reached her and she suddenly found herself walking to the dining room table. In the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, the only food they had were rations, which were nothing short of canned dog food (for humans, of course, but they tasted pretty awful).
“Where did this...come from?”
She stared at the table full of food.
“Hey, where did this come from? You didn’t make this, did you?”
Hm, this one was perceptive. And persistent. It made something in his chest ache for a home he no longer had, one that was a person rather than a place. Still, it didn’t make him more likely to open up. Well, some things were harmless.
“Some things are better left unspoken. But no, I’m told the white hair is called Marie Antoinette syndrome, and the eyepatch isn’t a fashion statement.”
He didn’t offer any information besides what she had asked directly, and even then, only that he felt was safe to share.
“Left unspoken for too long and they fester into something bigger, nastier. It’s better to just lay it all out. I’ve seen a lot so...” She smiled. “Try me.”
“Marie Antoinette syndrome?” She’d never heard of it. “But there must be some cause?” It couldn’t have just happened spontaneously overnight. “And your eye...” She gasped. “Are you...?!” Just like Yuu-san? She didn’t know exactly what those experiments did to him, but her fellow soldier also had something with his left eye. It had turned into a gruesome bloody mess and he almost killed her when he was like that.

He wasn’t an easy person to get answers out of. As much as it would probably do him some good to talk about things instead of breaking people’s arms, it wasn’t something he was used to doing.
Shinoa was very much used to not-happy stories. Besides, she lived in a time of war. Everyone she met had a tragic backstory. But this guy? He was different. His appearance, his mannerisms... Something told her he wasn’t just a victim of war.
“Mind if you enlighten me? I’m guessing you didn’t intentionally dye your hair that way. And that eyepatch isn’t some fashion statement, is it?”
