Well, this is another important issue that has come up in the fandom, and I think it's necessary to mention this, especially with the reaction of the fandom, involving the controversy with Michael, Ashley, that... joke, and racism.
So, what should be a common sense is : Any joke that involves this specific subject is distasteful, even if it's just "teetering" to the idea ( as Michael himself said. )
It's... a fact that they owned up to it and apologized, making it clear it's WASN'T cool AT ALL that they did that. Though, ideally, they should've acknowledged this way before. And it's also important to note that I wasn't just one joke as most are saying, it was... multiple times they made the same joke.
The gap of time they took to finally acknowledge this honestly has added even more fuel to this situation in the present, making it even worse and brow raising.
Now, I can see the possibility that Ashley and Michael did have the capacity to grow and learn from this. I don't think they're entirely bad people, but this is definitely a bad side they have to them, and I CAN recognize that what they did was ( and still is ) a terrible thing. No matter how much I admired them and their work before, it's was still a shitty joke to make, even if it wasn't ""explicitly"" racist. It shouldn't have taken 7 years for them to be held accountable for these jokes ( remember, "THESE". in plural. It was multiple times. )
And with that said, here's the truly important thing :
Stop invalidating people who got hurt by these distasteful jokes. Racism is a grave problem, people die because of this shit, and any kind of "joke" about it should be unacceptable.
I've been reading people's reactions to this and, honestly, we should only consider the opinions of those who ARE part of the black community itself.
Because they're the only voices that matter in this situation.
I saw people saying they understood that this happened a while ago, and believing Michael and Ashley wouldn't do something like that again in the present;
I also saw people say that were still hurt, angry, and genuinely disappointed about the whole situation. ( Justifiably so )
Both perspectives are valid.
It's okay to feel hurt, disappointed and tired. This is something that goes deep, and no one can fully understand how the roots of this kind of thing can deeply hurt someone, except for the people that are forced to live with that every single day.
We'll never know how it is, except for them. They have every right to be hurt and express that.
So, let's NOT mistake these people—that are rightfully disappointed—with others that are actually doing bad shit ( doxxing/sending gore to Ashley and Michael )
Even because, the people who are doxxing them aren't from the black community or even care about this important topic, I mean, it's the UTTP for fucks sake! They don't give a fuck.
And this makes me mad because this type of shit always happens :
A famous creator screws up regarding a extremely important issue we should be talking about, but the attention always and up being redirected to these motherfuckers who just wanted an excuse to do fucked up shit. Then the importance of the subject ends up being watered down and the responsibility of the creator(s) that said/did the bad thing ends up never being taken seriously, because—in the fandom's view— the victim ends up being the creator that fucked up in the first place, all because of the UTTP harassment.
And even if there wasn't a UTTP situation. White fans would still drown out black voices, just like it's happening right now; just like it happened 7 years ago, hence why this is only surfacing right now. White fans are way too quick to let these things go because it was just a "edgy joke".
Sure it was, to YOU it was. It just goes to show how safe you are in your own privilege.
We should be focusing on the fact that : they ( Ashley and Michael ) did most certainly screw up, apologized and that black people are STILL allowed to feel disappointed. Yes, even if it was 7 years ago, because racism has always been real and, disgracefully, it still is.
This shit leaves open wounds.
Actual criticism is different from harassment, we shouldn't let those crazy fuckos that harass anyone, just because they want to, take away the validity of the actual people that were affected by this whole situation.
And also, here's the worst part, is that there's white fans who are using this whole situation as an excuse to be racist and joke about it as well; now, that's the kind of people I think should definitely go fuck themselves with a brick alongside with the UTTP.
I add this because THESE fans should be held accountable as well (in a responsible way). people are genuinely defending these jokes as if Michael and Ashley were gods or something.
Like, I adored them; their content helped me a lot through some dark times since I was younger, but we shouldn't idealize anyone like this, especially famous people we don't even know personally. Especially when it's a situation that hurt a marginalized group were not part of; we don't get so say what they should feel or not, if they should forgive or not. White people aren't the ones who should decide if what Ashley and Michael did was forgivable or not. BLACK PEOPLE SHOULD.
Your favorite creator did a shitty thing? fucking deal with it; THIS NOT ABOUT YOU.
Let's just stop trying to simplify things and let the ACTUAL people that were affected by this express themselves.
Let black people express themselves.
