i came here to send something silly on anon but then thought wait i actually do have a question you might be able to answer. is there a reason there are so many incredible broadway actresses on the gilded age? like it’s not a musical, right? is it just a coincidence? does the casting director just know a lot of musical theatre people? i am very happy they are getting paid i am just so confused. sorry if this is a question that’s been answered a bunch lmaoo
I think it's a combination of a few things.
They film in New York so the pool of actors there tends to be people who do more theatre. The same reason Elsbeth and Law and Order etc. have a lot of Broadway actors as guest stars.
They started filming in 2020 so those actors had a lot more availability. (I don't think this actually had as much of an impact as some people say as I believe they'd started doing table reads before everything shut down, but it probably had a slight impact on later seasons.)
And then when it comes to auditions and casting, I think stage actors are just more suited to this sort of show because a lot of it is very theatrical. And it's kind of become their thing, so I guess there's possibly an element of "which Tony nominee/winner's talents can we waste on this two minute scene?" going on in the casting room now.
(And you're right, it's not a musical, but they could and should find a way to let Audra McDonald sing. Her character is canonically musical.)
