BACKGROUND.

The Demirel family have been vampire hunters in Turkey for as long anyone can remember. Lilya’s parents, lawyers by day, hunters by night, had officially started training their children at age three. They learned everything about vampires, from A to Z, different fighting styles, weapon fighting, and different languages.

Kerem and Ada Demirel had been the leaders of a group of hunters operating in Turkey with the unsurprising aim of eradicating vampire existence in Turkey. It wasn’t mandatory for the kids to take over leadership, but they had shaped them all for the rule if they wished to do so. Lilya had been raised in a loving environment, her parents giving their all to give their kids a good life, despite the busy life they both lead. It was also a norm for the kids to attend meetings for hunters whenever they wanted.

At age fifteen, during one of the meetings, a big group of vampires had broken into the secret meeting spot, with the intention of killing every single hunter in the room. Lilya had been the only one who had managed to run away, unable to save any of her siblings, Altan, Ediz, and Serra, aged 18, 16, and 10, respectively at the time, or her parents or any member of the group.

Against her better judgment and in a state of shock, she had went back to the meeting venue to find a massacre. Every single hunter in that room, including and her parents and siblings, had been killed and left. Who she didn’t find was Serra.

Fellow hunters who hadn’t been at the meeting at that time had took Lilya in, finding her sitting amongst the bodies of her family. Ever since that night, Lilya worked her absolute hardest, and her priority was finding Serra. She had no idea if she managed ran away or if she was taken by the vampires, and she hoped with everything in her that it wouldn’t be the latter. Her second goal was finding the group of vampires that had killed her family and taking them down, too.

After years of searching, Lilya, aged twenty-four, had managed to find a lead, coming face to face with Serra, no longer human, but a very bloodthirsty vampire. Killing her that been the hardest thing Lilya has ever had to do. She had sent out a group of hunters after Serra’s vampire clan, but she was not there during the raid, too overwhelmed with the aftermath of killing her own sister. She had gone through a period of shock, unable to do her duties, and her adoptive parents had thought it would be a good idea for her to move to New York City and find out more about the council and how it operates, to see if they can implement something similarly in Turkey, and because they thought a change of environment would do her good. Against her better judgment, she packed her bags and moved continents.

PERSONALITY.

It goes without saying that Lilya hates vampires with everything in her. It’s a conscious effort not to kill every single one she sees on scene. There’s a rage and grief that are always boiling, but she had learned over the years to maintain composure and not let it show, even if she comes across as cold and mysterious sometimes. It’s a very small number of people who she’ll let past her walls and will let see a different side of her.

     GABRIEL DOESN’T, but he’ll try to save the opportunity for another day. it’s not like this is a new attitude for lilya anyways. “that’s what rude people say,” he scoffs, though it’s not like gabriel is at all a warm and fuzzy person anyways. lilya’s just more blunt than he is. he doesn’t know how she’s going to react to his story, and he just hopes it’s not pity. he’s gotten enough of that to last a lifetime unfortunately. he can’t read her expression, so he wonders what’s actually going on in the woman’s mind. the question isn’t shocking to him, lilya always seems to just want the facts of it all. “my mother thought of a few potential leads, but i don’t even know where to start.” even with his family apparently being a founding family, his mother had been so distant from them, it feels weird to ask them for help. 

“AND THAT’S WHAT SENSITIVE PEOPLE SAY,” she counters easily, waving her hand dismissively. The idea that Gabriel’s going through something she had been through makes her feel a sense of protectiveness over her friend. She can understand the frustration that comes with not finding answers, the need for closure. She felt them all and in good force for years before she had managed to locate her sister and the vampire group who had changed Serra and killed her family years ago. “List the leads and go one by one, that’s how you start,” she replies. “From there, whatever you find you just follow it.” She folds her arms. “It’s... potentially a long road, if you’re ready and prepared for it,” she warns him, just so he knows what awaits him. “I can help.” If anything, she wants to.

“My GOD!” Anthony’s brain was fried, but he was awake enough to see several people surrounding an ambulance. And… some site of an accident, too. Not to mention, there were several details that just looked… wrong. “How do you break a leg in four different places? Don’t tell me it was somehow a parkour accident.”

“WHEN YOU’RE STUPID ENOUGH TO ACCEPT A DUMB DARE.” She’s been here for only a few minutes, but it was enough to understand it was a dare gone wrong. “Not sure what the dare is, I’ve only been here a few minutes, though whatever it is, the boy’s going to be in a cast for a while.”

“ YOU MEAN ARE PEOPLE USUALLY POLITE ENOUGH TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS ? ”   cassius asks wryly, flashing her a small grin.   “ yes. i’m certainly not used to having to work so hard to get someone to like me, but i don’t mind so much. the fact that we’re sitting here means it’s worth it. ”   already this dinner feels world’s different than the last one they had sat through together ;   lilya hadn’t been rude, but it was clear she didn’t think much of him, with walls high up. from cassius is standing now, the walls still seem to be there, but they don’t seem as high or strong as they had been. he knows he’ll have to prove to her that she can trust him, but it’s a challenge he’s willing to face. his smile widens when she beckons at him to clarify, eyes darkening a bit as he watches her. it’s hard to believe they’re talking about food.   “ well, i don’t know firsthand how similar the food is here from what you’re used to in istanbul, ”   he tells her,   “ but i’m willing to bet you’ll be pleased. ”   otherwise he wouldn’t have brought her here.

he hesitates at her question, and he knows that a few weeks ago his answer would’ve been a lot more simple.   “ it’s possible, ”   he says slowly, but cas is already shaking his head.   “ but as long as my family is here, i can’t see myself going anywhere for too long. time is precious—it should be spent with the people you most care about. ”   cassius wondered, for lilya, who those people were.   “ i imagine it must’ve been quite an offer, ”   he reaches for his wine glass. he doesn’t get the sense that she likes new york very much, from the way she’s talked about it.   “ do you see yourself going back to turkey, or going somewhere else in the future ? ”   

cassius shouldn’t be surprised that this is her first date in awhile, considering how taken aback she had been on new years when he asked if she was with anyone. but he’s a little surprised anyway, because lilya had too much going for her to to not garner the attention of other men. it seemed more likely that this was the first date she’s agreed to in years, which makes him feel a wave of pride.   “ i don’t do this very often either, ”   he admits, with a small smile.   “ my sisters blame my job, but honestly, i’ve learned from my past relationships that dating is a lot more fun when you only go out with people you’re genuinely interested in. none of those dating apps, ”   cas lets out a short laugh, waving the thought away with his hand. hera and evie have forced him on them once or twice, but it’s safe to say cas isn’t a texter.

“IF PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO ANSWER, DOESN’T MAKE THEM IMPOLITE,” she counters matter-of-factly, scoffing lightly. There’s no bite or snark in her tone, one that is was somewhat of a norm for her whenever she talked to him before. She tilts her head at his words, somewhat surprised by his blunt honesty. She shouldn’t be, when she’s equally a blunt individual, but maybe it’s because she’s not used to people being the same with her. More than that, he just admitted to her he’s been trying to get her to like him. The feeling she gets, fueled by him saying it’s worth it that they’re here together, overwhelms her a little bit and it annoys her. It’s totally a feeling she wants to control, but is and has been unable to. She’s fully aware things right now are nowhere near the same as when they had dinner together the first time. “Working for something isn’t all that bad, takes you down a few notches,” she teases subtly - the only way she can reply to him without revealing too much of what she’s feeling is that way. “I’m hard to please, Lallement, just a warning.” Though, she’s made that very obvious already.

It’s interesting to her he’s talking about the preciousness of time, when time is one thing he has an infinite amount of. She wonders if the death of his best friend has him talking that way, when as a vampire, he’s surely lost a lot of loved ones over the years. It’s a curse going through that countless times. “I get that. It feels like something’s missing when they’re not around in the same place as you are,” she says quietly, that topic hitting too close to home. If her family was still alive, she wouldn’t even think of leaving Turkey, and ever since their passing, there has been a void in her that won’t seem to close. “Good enough to make me stay,” she effortlessly lies, shrugging lightly and taking a sip from her drink.  “I’d like to go back to Turkey eventually, yes, it’s home.”

“Going out with someone you’re not interested in just seems like a waste of time and energy.” She waves her hand dismissively, taking another sip of her wine. “Dating apps? You’ve been on dating apps, Lallement?” This makes her laugh, because the idea of Cassius on a dating app seems like something out of a comedy movie. “Pray tell, do you have any funny stories?”

“ NO, OF COURSE YOU WON’T, ”   he nods seriously. if she had told him, what would be the fun in that ?   cassius rather figure out what impresses her naturally. his smile widens slightly when she decides to try the same thing as him.   “ i’d say you won’t be disappointed, but i’d hate to raise your expectations too high, ”   he says coyly,   “ but i have high hopes for you, lilya demirel. ”   regarding how she likes their dinner. obviously. it’s been awhile since cas has been on a first date, so he feels a little rusty, despite it not being the first time they’ve gotten dinner before. maybe he shouldn’t have asked about her family immediately—and his suspicions are confirmed when she gives him a quick look that makes his heart sink into his stomach, especially at the evasiveness she gives him. cassius hasn’t forgotten that look she gave him last time they were together, that she understood loss. maybe he’d underestimated just how much loss she’s been through. happy to redirect the conversation onto him, he nods.   “ all the family i have is here, yes, ”   he tells her.   “ it’s the main reason i’ve never left new york. i hate being away from them for too long. ”   cassius leans back in his seat.   “ tell me something about you, ”   he changes courses a bit, wanting to know more about her, but didn’t want to ask any more questions that’d step on her toes.   “ that i don’t already know, which feels like a lot. ”

“ARE YOU USED TO GETTING ANSWERS RIGHT AWAY?” Something tells her he is, that he’s not used to having to try so hard. He probably doesn’t have to with other people, not when he’s so charming and kind, and not the heartless vampire she thought he was. She’ll admit that, at least. Seeing him try so hard with her the past few months must mean something, even if it’s not something Lilya was ever anticipating would happen. If she wasn’t a hunter and he wasn’t a vampire and her past didn’t haunt her, then she would’ve had butterflies in her stomach from their very first meeting. What she doesn’t want to admit or acknowledge is that they are there, but pretending they’re not makes it all more acceptable in a sense, despite the fact that yet here she is, on a date with him. “Why, aren’t you confident enough, Lallement?” She tilts her head slightly to the side, eyebrow quirked in a challenging manner. His other statement confuses her, and it shows. “Clarify,” is all she says, still not used to him catching her off guard with things he does and says.

She’s relieved he doesn’t further press on the topic of her family. Vampire or not, it’s not an easy topic for her, but surely, him being a vampire makes it even more sensitive to her. She expects if she told him, he’d sympathize, offer his condolences and apologies, and this isn’t what Lilya wants to hear, because then she’d want to yell out the fact that it was his species that took her family away from her. She’d rather things stay the way they are right now, pleased with how things are going thus far. “Do you ever see yourself leaving? I don’t think I would’ve ever left Istanbul if it weren’t for the job offer.” A lie, but also not a lie. She never planned on ever leaving her hometown, but the whole investigate the supernatural scene in the city and learn from it had made her. “Oh, you’re by the book, huh?” On how dates go. Her tone is teasing, yet she decides to oblige anyway. “This is my first date in years,” she admits the first thing that comes to her mind. She’s so used to being closed off, she doesn’t really know where to begin or what to say.

“What the hell happened here?” Whatever this sight was, Anthony hadn’t intended to come across it, but it was… gruesome, to say the least. All after playing a fucking Pokemon-ripoff videogame. For glitches.

“APPARENTLY THE DUDE BROKE HIS LEG IN FOUR DIFFERENT PLACES,” Lilya says casually, watching the ambulance stop on the side of the road. It’s unsurprising injuries don’t faze her, not when she’s a hunter and injuries are a typical part of the job. “Not sure how though. Someone fainted, too.”

“I suppose one of many, depending on the field you’re in. I’m sure you’ll do well here, there’s a lot of excellent companies.” New York was one of the cities that Thad always came back to amongst other where he had his own, small businesses that he’d revisit every so often. New York was one of his favorites, though that’s because his family is here. “I see. It must have been difficult making the move away from your family.” It’s not really a question, or an observation, just something he knows from his own experiences. He’d never forget his family, his human family. It was difficult being apart from them in the beginning, even though he stuck around for a long time to watch his wife and children live, grow and move on. After that he stuck with the Lynn’s and they became his family. He smiled softly, as he thinks of his favorite place. How could he choose when there were so many great places. “Leptis Magna. It’s on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, now a world heritage site. It’s really something.” He knew the ruins there didn’t compare to those in Roma, but it was his birthplace, and it held a place in his heart.

“I’M NOT WORRIED. The company I work with is already one of the leading law firms in the city.” She assume he’s already heard of the firm she works with, since he’s been in the city for a long time. She understands the New York hype, understands why people love living here and why people gravitate to it. Maybe if she wasn’t dealing with everything and maybe if her reason for coming here wasn’t indirectly related to the loss of her sister, then she’d see it the way others did. “I’ve been here a few years now, you get used to it.” Except, she’s still low key grieving the loss, not in the healthiest of ways, given she distracts herself rather than actually deal with it. But she can’t say she’s gotten used to it. “I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never been there. Though I can’t say it’s something people mention a lot.” As opposed to the typical cities people like. “Must be unique, then.”

“ AND WHAT DOES IMPRESS YOU ? ”   cassius lets out a laugh, glancing down at her with fondness. he doesn’t know much about lilya, outside of the work environment, but he’s quick to pick up that she’s not someone that’s easy to impress. cas has never really had to do this before—work so hard just for a sliver of someone’s time—but it’s worth it in the way she smiles back at him, however small and demure it is. it’s nice that they can joke, because a few weeks ago they hadn’t even been able to do that. not to mention it’s a welcome distraction from everything else going on in his life, choosing to focus on trying to make lilya smile than everything that’s been making him frown.   “ i typically order kofte when i come here, ”   he tells her, and he’s going to order it again, closing the menu and placing it in front of him. when the waiter comes he’s quick to order them a bottle of wine, a red.   “ is all your family back in turkey ? ”   he asks, curious to know more about what her home looks like back there. 

“YOU THINK I’D TELL YOU THAT?” She quirks an eyebrow, a small smile playing on her lips. It’s actually nothing. Hardly anything impresses her nowadays, but she won’t tell Cassius that. Maybe it’s a little fun to see him try. What she won’t admit is that it’s not just fun, no, there’s something about how much he’s trying. She refuses to dwell on it, because she’ll be going down a very dangerous and unwise route. “It’s a popular Turkish dish.” Which makes her unsurprised it’s what he goes for, but then again, kofte’s the way to her heart. So she smiles. “Good choice. I like kofte, too. Let’s see if it’s as good as the ones back home.” Surely the restaurants here are run by Turkish people, but she hasn’t yet found a place that’s as good as the one she has back in Istanbul. Him asking about her family doesn’t come as a surprise. They are on a date and they’re talking about her hometown, it’s only natural. There’s a slight change in her eyes at the question, but it’s only a flicker, a millisecond, and she hopes Cassius doesn’t catch on it. “They used to be. Is your entire family here?” Maybe changing the topic so they’re talking about him would help.

THEY’RE ON A DATE, AND SHE’S STILL CALLING HIM LALLEMENT. cassius would laugh if he didn’t find it so surprisingly charming, which probably says a lot about how much he likes her. is it strange that he likes her so much, given how little they know about each other ?   maybe. but amidst everything going on in the city right now, his harmless crush on the human woman was the least of his worries, and he knew that.   “ i’m a few minutes early, ”   he smiles sheepishly,   “ i was already in the neighborhood. ”   and cas has always hated the idea of meeting someone for a date, for them to already be there waiting for him. it seemed so awkward. by now he knows enough about lilya’s dry sense of humor to tell that she’s kidding, snorting to himself as he leads her down the street. the fact that she’s heard about the restaurant seems like a good sign, if it’s somewhere she would’ve gone another time anyway. cas shakes his head, scanning the menu.   “ i really enjoy turkish food, ”   he tells her, knowing better than to mention his last girlfriend had been turkish.   “ i’ve never been to turkey, but i’d love to go one day. where in the country are you from ? ”

“JUST A FEW MINUTES? Not very impressive,” she jokes again, a small teasing smile playing on her lips, because in reality she does like that he’s early. She doesn’t know when that happened, but messing with him is too entertaining to her. Maybe because she likes the reaction she gets from him. Anyway. She thinks he looks better tonight, in comparison to when she saw him last in his office when she stopped by a few days ago. Though she knew best, grief wasn’t necessarily something that always manifested physically. Just like she’s still low key grieving the losses she’s experienced in her life. “Yeah? What’s your favorite?” she asks, interest peaked, wondering what he’s tried. If she were to guess, it’s the most popular foods, as expected. Maybe he’ll surprise her, he seems to do it at least once every time they talk. Annoying. She quickly skims through the menu, already knowing what she’ll go for, eyes going back on the male. “That’s a shame. It’s a beautiful country.” It surprises her he hasn’t been there. She wonders if he knows the vampire group there, particularly the one that massacred her family and turned her sister. “Istanbul.”

     “WELL, WHAT IF I TOLD YOU YOU’RE WRONG?” he won’t, but gabriel has to be annoying just for a little bit longer. a part of him knows lilya wouldn’t judge or fault him for what’s been on his mind, but it’s the act of verbally expressing his thoughts and feelings that’s making him feel nauseous. he rolls his eyes as he mutters, “well, that’s a backhanded compliment if i’ve ever gotten one.” of course, he’s trying to just prolong expressing himself. “no,” he shakes his head. frankly, gabriel couldn’t care less about a dead vampire he’s never met before. “it’s just making me think a little bit more about my brother. and how i don’t even know what happened.” he isn’t expecting to feel lighter after admitting it to her, but he feels like it’s slightly easier to breathe talking to someone about it. 

“BY ALL MEANS, GO AHEAD.” She waves her hand, thinking he won’t actually go for it. Even if he does, she likes to believe she’s not wrong. “I’m just honest.” Brutally honest, but still honest all the same. She’s always been like that, though her tendency has increased over the years. She doesn’t understand beating around the bush and she also expects people to hit her with the cold truth. She’s not a fan of babying people. Gabriel’s story hits a little too close to him, and there’s a softness that flickers in the brunette’s eyes. She has to compose herself for a few seconds. This was here all those years back when she had no idea where Serra was, and had dedicated every minute she wasn’t studying or working on tracking her down and finding out what happened - and the answers she got had wrecked her. “I take it you’ve already attempted to look for answers?”

He’s slightly surprised at her answer. He’d expected her to have moved over to be close to someone, family perhaps. Or even just for the New York city sights, something that draws tourists in and holds on to them till they decide to stay. “That’s a long way from home for a job. Do you have family here too?” he asks. He’d always been with his family for the most part. His human family, and then his family in the afterlife – the Lynn’s. He nods his head in answer to her question. He’s well-travelled. There isn’t many places he hasn’t been or many things he hasn’t seen. He takes another sip from his cup of coffee before speaking. “America is great, New York is home, but there’s a lot more to see out there.”

“NEW YORK CITY’S ONE OF THE BEST CITIES TO BUILD A CAREER, wouldn’t you agree?” She’s always been career-driven and ambitious, but she never wanted to leave Istanbul and work elsewhere. If it weren’t for her work in the supernatural field, she wouldn’t have thought for one minute to leave. She doesn’t hate the city, per se, she’s actually okay with it. It’s just not home. “No, I don’t. It’s just me here. They’re attached to Turkey.” They were attached to Turkey, given they’re all dead, due to his species, she adds in her head. “I agree. I guess with how demanding work has been, I never really got the chance to go on proper vacations.” Besides the fact, for most of her life, she had been on a mission to locate her sister-turned-vampire. After that was dealt with, she was sent here. “What’s your favorite place?”

HE’S WAITING FOR HER AT THE CROSS STREETS HE INSTRUCTED HER TO, purely so cassius wouldn’t give away where they were going. part of him missed the day when a man would pick up a woman for a date from her home, but he didn’t even offer that to lilya, assuming she was the progressive type that would find that strange. instead he arrives at the street early, the cold air of january no match for a vampire. cas didn’t think she’d stand him up, but he was aware that her agreeing to go out with him was a stroke of luck on his part—therefore, when she finally comes, a small smile blooms on his lips.   “ lilya, ”   he greets with a small nod, not sure if he should be hugging her instead, or some other alternative. typically first dates were reserved for strangers or someone he’s grown close with ;   somehow lilya stands in the middle of both, which makes everything a little more confusing. but it’s a GOOD kind of confusing, the nerves in his stomach easily mistaken for the excited anxiety that comes with a first day at a new job, or seeing someone important after a long wait.   “ i hope you’re hungry, ”   he adds as he starts to walk down the street, letting her fall into step with him. he had told her it was going to be dinner, after all.   “ i stumbled on this place a few years ago, so i hope you like it. you’ll have to tell me how it compares to the food back home. ”   holding the door open for her, cassius walks them into a small hole-in-the-wall turkish restaurant, where they’re seated by the window.   “ i was told it has the best turkish food in the city, ”   he tells her,   “ but i’ll let you be the judge of that. ”

SHE’S LYING TO HERSELF SAYING THIS DATE wasn’t that thing she thought most of the past couple of days. Besides the fact she hasn’t been on a date in years, purely because she was too busy and preoccupied with priority issues to even think about dates, the date is with a vampire. If you told Lilya three months ago this would happen, she’d laugh till her stomach hurt, saying this is the most absurd and insulting thing she’s ever heard. Yet, here she is, walking down the street to meet Cassius. She can spot him from a distance and it gets her a little more nervous the closer she gets there. What possessed her to agree to this, she has no idea. To be fair, she could’ve cancelled - she had a few days to do so, and she did think about it. But she didn’t do it and she doesn’t want to dwell on the why of it all.

“Lallement,” she greets, giving him a small smile - a rarity. Surely if you’re going on a date with someone you’d stop calling them by their last name, but it’s become a habit of sorts for her. This date marks a change in their dynamic, one she’s not ready to acknowledge. “It’s a first time someone arrives somewhere before I do,” she notes. She’s always been very punctual, and appreciates punctuality. She tries not to look at him too long. He’s too handsome. She shouldn’t even be thinking about that; it’s annoying. “I just ate actually. Does that ruin your plans?” She’s messing with him, waiting to see if he’ll catch her on it. She hasn’t ate. After all, he did tell her it’s a dinner plan. When she sees it’s a Turkish restaurant, she can’t help but smile, shaking her head. There’s something very amusing about how cliche Cassius Lallement is, and for some reason, it doesn’t bother her as much as she thought it would. She looks around the restaurant as she walks in, looking back at Cassius. “Yeah? I’ve heard about it, but I haven’t gotten the chance to try it out yet.” She never thought her first time would be with a vampire of all people. She moves to sit down. “Is it your first time trying Turkish food?” She moves to sit down, looking up at him. She’d bet it’s not, especially when he’s lived such a long time, which gives him ample time to try different things.

SHE’S WRONG ABOUT ONE THING :   there’s not always a reason for everything. for people who only listen to logic and reasoning, maybe, but human beings—and all creatures, really—are much more advanced than that. some things are just because of a feeling of the heart, and that’s partly how he feels when he looks at lilya. he’s made peace with the fact that he’s drawn to her, not unlike how he’s been drawn to others before. it doesn’t happen often for cassius, a vampire whose become comfortable in letting the years pass with just him and his family, but when the time does come, he doesn’t let himself hesitate. and maybe he should, since the reality of the situation is that she’ll never know everything about him, a part of himself hidden in the shadows—where they belong. but he can’t give her a better answer than the one he provides with her, smiling despite everything when she tells him it’s cliche. cassius just shrugs his shoulders once. maybe it is. he lets out a genuine laugh when she asks him why she should say yes, though he’s grateful that only moments later she takes it back.   “ you’re a piece of work, lilya demirel, ”   he tells her, head shaking slightly. that could easily be another less cliche reason, but cas is too pleased by her agreeing to point it out. a smile breaks out on his lips, the first one in days.   “ how about saturday, six o’clock ? “   he already has a place in mind he wants to take her.

THERE’S A SHADOW OF A SMILE THAT FORMS ON LILYA’S LIPS AT WORDS. “You don’t even know,” she points out, gently pushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Cassius’s not the only one who’s hiding a part of himself. She’s hiding a big part of herself from him too. The part that dictates their dynamic, the part that explains why she’s the way she is and why she treats him the way she does. It’s the part that would ultimately make Cassius fully understand Lilya Demirel and answer every question that may be running through his head about her. The more they discuss this - the date - the more real it becomes and it already has her head in a whirl. Her head will stay in a whirl till Saturday comes, and most likely it won’t subdue even after the date’s over. She’ll have to bury herself in her work to distract herself from it and what it all means. She doesn’t want to think about it, doesn’t want to make a big deal out of it. The last thing she expected out of all of this is earn the attention of a vampire. Though, if he had known she’s a hunter from the get go, then maybe that would’ve placed a big brick wall between them. “Works for me, Lallement. Saturday it is. Where are we going?” It’s not a surprise she’d prefer to know and not wait. Though something tells her he’s not going to divulge.

He would have thought he would have crossed paths with her if they’ve been here for the last five years. If she was at the party, he’d assume they ran in the same circles, unless she was just a human in the dark about the kind of world he was from. “What brought you to New York?” he asks, curious about what might have made her travel so far from her home country.

Not knowing how much she knew, if anything at all, about the Lynn’s it made her question a difficult one to answer. His native language was now extinct, and the accent that he once carried had faded long ago, it made it easier to convince people he was from wherever he wanted them to think. He spoke many languages fluently which also helped. He didn’t want to lie to her, but it was easier to let her believe that he was a New Yorker. Explaining his family could be even more complex. “I have. Though I don’t often stick around too long. I like to get out of the city every so often just for a change of scenery or for business.”

“WORK. I’m a lawyer at Brown & Mackenzie.” That’s not even half the reason she’s here, but it’s the reason she tells people. Surely, her stay has been longer than she expected. After all, she only came here to study the supernatural scene and learn from the the way things are managed so she could carry that information back to her hometown and feed into the implementation of something similar. However, in between learning and the craziness that’s been happening, Lilya kept extending her stay till a point where she has no anticipated date of return. “I can imagine the craziness of the city does motivate one to leave every now for a breath of fresh air.” She feels that way about the city. As busy as Istanbul was too, she’ll always consider it home, so she never really felt that way about it. “I take it you’ve been to a few places?”

     “WHO SAYS I’M LYING?” he asks, and there’s a small amount of defensiveness in his tone. gabriel’s realizing he’s either making things obvious, or lilya is really good at reading him. either way, he doesn’t like it. gabriel groans, and he feels like lilya is making a big deal out of nothing. “my punches have been fine.” not as good as they could be, but certainly better than before. “i just haven’t been getting a lot of sleep. things have been rough lately, but it’s fine.”

“I DID,” she answers simply, eyeing the male. She’s confident she can read Gabriel, and she’s definitely not fazed by his defensiveness. If anything, it only proves her point: he is lying. She doesn’t want to pry or interfere, as it could be something that’s entirely not her business, but she’s not used to the other being so out of it, which makes her inclined to believe it’s serious. “They have been fine, just not today.” He has shown a lot of progress in their training sessions, which is why she’s curious about what has him so unfocused. “With the murder? Or is it more?”

“I DOUBT ACCIDENTAL INVITES HAPPEN AT AN INVITE LIKE THIS,” she states. “Though, if it makes you feel any better, I have no idea how I landed an invite, too.” There’s no way an invite as sophisticated and big as this made errors or ‘accidents’ in the invites. However, she’s been unable to theorize through whom she had gotten an invite. She wants to let it go because it feels a little in the past now, especially when there are bigger things going on, but Lilya’s hardly one to let things go. “Who’s your brother?” she asks, maybe she knows him or at least heard of him. “You’re fine, ramble away.”
