Thoughts of loving Natasha slipped away as he searched for his hat, his brows furrowed in frustration. He’d become so lost in his task that he didn’t listen for her. His programming, though strong, was irreparably broken. So, rather than react to her from a distance, he only realized her presence when he heard her behind him. The sound of her voice spooked him. In one fluid movement, the Winter Soldier had pinned Natasha up against the wall, his forearm pressed hard into her throat, his dark eyes completely lifeless as they had once been. His real hand held her arm down, so she couldn’t struggle and hit him. For a moment, then two, he held her there. Slowly, slowly, something came back to him. The part of him that loved the woman he was trying to smother came screaming back into his mind. “Natasha,” he gasped. His body lurched away from her as if she’d burned him, and he reeled backwards.
