The Selki story was told to me by Giada some day in the fall last year. Now I’m going to tell it to you.
The Selki is a mythological creature found in Nordic folklores.
Watch the ocean in the dark...
Seal ladies would emerge from the ocean to come out of their fur and dance on the empty beach.
One day a lonely fisherman that lives in this deserted part of the land stole one of the seal costumes as the ladies were dancing under the moon light. He was seeking a companion for this lonely life, but he doesn’t know how but to trap.
When the dance was finished the seal ladies one by on put on their fur and one by one they went- returning into the dark water under the moon.
Except for one who could not find her fur. She sobs and stares far into the dark water to see if her pack had realized she was left behind, but she could see nothing, except the reflection of the moon in the pitch black ocean.
On one clear night after 7 years, the lady is taking clothes down in front of the house. Her little son came running to her, he has found a seal fur in the deep storage when he was playing.
She couldn’t believe her eyes, as this fur reminded her of the deep blue sea and a kind of wild that has been put in storage for 7 years. She remembered that night when she parted with her pack and their wild...
She negotiated with the fisherman that she wanted to take her son back to the ocean to visit her family, they finally made a deal that she could go for 7 days.
Down they plunged, into the deep blue sea.
They swam and swam, the boy saw things he’s never seen before but yet felt so familiar. The mother saw things in her memories that she knew by heart what they were but yet felt so unacquainted.
Her pack was ecstatic to see her return, they had a feast and sat around to tell stories to each other, the boy was initiated into the family with warm welcomes.
When it was time to return again, the seal lady swore she would never forget about this feeling ever again.
Take out the fur, get back to the deep, we are all her, the fisherman and the child. that is what I learned from the seal ladies.
