thinking about when i started disco elysium, i was really lost as to how to get out of the starting room and eventually had to ask friends for help. i was completely bewildered because nobody i asked could explain why i was having so much trouble leaving the room. everyone claimed that the room had a door, but it just looked like an isolated hotel room bounded by a black void to me. i wound up slowly trudging around interacting with everything in the room and eventually died to the ceiling fan. i had been expecting the game to be kind of avant-garde and cerebral, so i kept an open mind and kept trying, desperately hoping to find some profundity in my fruitless search for a door that everyone insisted was there. only later did i learn that the game wasn’t meant to run on a 2011 imac and the door to the room hadn’t rendered

I still think the funniest interaction in Disco Elysium is right at the beginning when, if you tell Kim "hey I have a catastrophic mental condition that completely inhibits not just my ability to be a cop (if I even am one) but also my ability to function in society in any way" he just goes "omgggggg get OVER yourself have you tried helping someone ELSE about it?"

The game's plot does not happen if Kim has the appropriate reaction to learning that you have drugged yourself into forgetting everything about reality, which is to say "holy shit this man cannot be anywhere near a crime scene."

And the fact that he doesn't kinda goes to show that he is just as insane as Harry but in an opposite direction.

@eggpla yeah it's also a very early encapsulation of one of the game's big-picture messages. Kim has class consciousness for cops! He would rather do his job with a dangerously unstable person than hold another cop (or even someone who's just dressed as a cop) accountable in any way. And that's also a facet of Kim's insanity because he is so completely devoted to this solidarity even when it is counter-productive to his goals.
