something i find frustrating about Life lately is how people just absolutely refuse to experience any discomfort. and i dont mean this in the boomer "wah kids have it too easy theyre all pushovers and pussies" way, but i mean people will go crazy over anything thats not totally 100% sanitised and comfortable and pure and whatever the fuck. a show has a sex scene and you dont like it? people used to just look away for a second and maybe cringe. now it's a whole thinkpiece. people would rather ghost their friends or let issues fester rather than ever address an issue in their relationship with them. they wont let their friends vent in case it makes them uncomfortable. like can you just buck the fuck up and let things be a bit awkward sometimes? it wont kill you.
I think part of the issue is all the other ways people are forced to be uncomfortable. There really is a threshold for how much discomfort you can go through and take in without going crazy and looking at every nail with two hammers in each hand. That's something I have to remind myself lately. I wasn't very sex repulsed when I wasn't subjected to daily sexual harassment, even though I've always had sexual trauma. Now I see sex and I genuinely feel dread. I am constantly pushing down my comfort, but doing this over and over and over is really not sustainable either.
That's my personal experience, but I also know many kind empathetic and compassionate people who used to listen to everyone and after years and years of woe-is-me, they just cannot take a friend in to vent. It's not sustainable.
What I'm saying is I think that when boundaries in other areas of life are impossible to enforce (work, school, politically) we double down to the umpteenth degree where we're 'allowed' to, but if everyone is doing that, it's also... not sustainable. I don't think most people are aware of why they're uncomfortable either, and the constant demand for justification means we're pumping out excuses that don't always even apply to our feelings too. I think that's a big part of Gen Z's bullying problem especially, but its a problem for everyone.
Tonight nothing may save you but kitties
Thought this might help others who struggle when writing. I know I get in my head too much.
I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
Hey OP, love your scalding take here; don't forget about commutes.
Once you factor in commute times (which even for short distances can be grotesquely inflated due to the fact that so many people are all commuting at the same time, but that's a different conversation) many people are actually devoting upwards of 10-12 hours a day on "work related tasks."
real connection feels so rare nowadays just lust and losers
why did she have to say that? 😓
This being the last post from an abandoned M.I.A. fan blog from 2016…..
I remember this campaign and the Pepsi x Gladiator commercials lol. It's so endearingly like, late 20th century consumerist kitsch.
