True Reflections

The video being presented has a video of me flexing and showing muscles in the mirror while I draw the idealistic body proportions of a man. I am also ingesting protein powder pills to express how men do not accept therapy and medicine but are heavy advocates of protein and getting bigger in muscle mass. I also applied protein powder on my face as a face mask to represent using beauty products and it is considered feminine to use such products.I focused on the concept of men that appear “soft” towards chauvinistic perspectives.

The concept is to create an installation using fabrics that she hand- sewed as a carpet that will display a scene of playing cards with the depiction of playing with someone on a video chat to demonstrate our disconnection.  There will be  a video showing our moments of connection. This would be a piece dedicated to my grandma as she is going through sever hardship. I feel that I need to honor her and show despite our vast differences in age and in location we are connected.

Sometimes the piece you create looks nothing like what you initially thought it would...and that's a good thing!

did you call me? is the beginning of an investigation I am launching regarding the sounds of my life/house. I was inspired by the ending of too much clay and how my monosyllabic shout for my mother caused viewer's heads to turn and peer into the room in which the video was being projected. I was also informed by the way my mom calls to me across the house from her room - I am so accustomed to being summoned that sometimes I go to see what she needs and she had never called me in the first place, despite the fact that I swore I heard something. This piece is my first attempt at tapping into this sensation, of hearing my name across a large distance, of the pause between and anticipation for the next time "Melina" or any array of nicknames would float through the air vents into my room.

Because the work is a first attempt, there are some aspects that need tweaking. Technical difficulties that can be avoided through a better understanding of sound design, for example. Another thing to consider would be how the work is experienced. Ideal presentation of the work would involve an empty, quiet room that viewers would be able to enter after hearing the faint calling of my name. I was even toying with the idea of including a motion detector so that once the viewer entered the room with the speakers, the audio would stop. That being said, I did not mind where the work was presented. It was tucked away in a space not unlike the room where too much clay was shown, and the space was close enough to my classroom so that, on quiet moments, my call could be heard during the critique.

Corners Project - final project

siren, 115 x 48 inches, tempered panel, 2400 pheasant feathers, and sound, 2023

            siren was inspired by my interest in sound art combined with the exploration I have been doing this semester regarding understanding my Greek heritage through the abstraction of mythology. The piece is first and foremost sound art – the main feature of the work is a recording of me vocalizing and humming a song I am making up on the spot. I wanted to create a tune that felt dreamy and haunting, something that was unrecognizable as anything you would hear on the radio but that resonated with my audience. In addition to capturing the absent-minded vocalizations, my recording also features the creaks and groans of the stool that I was sitting on as it shifted under my weight. I felt the noise added to the audio experience, especially when considering where the soundtrack would be playing from. Second to the sound, siren is about altering architecture. I created a false wall that rounded out the corner of the room the work was installed in and that created a gap between the floor and ceiling that viewers of the work could look into. The recording of my voice would play from the upper area of my construction, which, when coupled with the horizontal gap in the wall, lured viewers in to get a closer look.

There are details about how I treated this work that I think deserve a second consideration or approach. For example, in some cases the room in which the work was installed had a baseboard that affected how flush with the wall the bottom portion of the tempered panel would be. In other cases, like in the last picture, the installation was slightly off center and it affected the “rounded out” corner look that I was initially going for. Originally my design included the feathers, eventually piled up inside the structure (and then removed altogether) being attached to the wall, sticking out so that viewers may touch them. I also was going to sew a set of legs together to reference the human/siren perhaps trapped inside the alcove I created. But as the piece was installed, deinstalled, and installed again, I considered that by stripping it of unnecessary detail and information I was making the piece truer to what I was always interested in: sound as art. Do not be surprised if in it’s next iteration, siren has no physical structure at all and instead is just the disembodied singing of a mysterious woman resonating through a building.

Terracota clay and d-rings.

With no way of translating architectural features in the buildings of Brickell, Miami the most interesting feature are the sewer, electrical boxes, or just city and state signage on the floor of the streets. With the huge financial support, street development, water and power systems along with huge realtor development such as hotels. Miami on itself is a constructed life, rounded by tourist traffic and redirected water from the Everglades, all just to support the façade of the “Miami Life”.
