Museum of the Moving Image

The Museum of the Moving Image has wonderful exhibits that demonstrates the aspects of media production. The “Behind the Scene” Exhibition was extremely fascinating where we see the whole process of media production through the materials and artist decisions for the film. The use of 3D blueprints laid out mini versions of what the set in a film would look like. What amazed me the most weren’t the mini layouts, but the bigger models. I learned that actual life size models were used in set to replace actors/ people in a scene. Reasons in doing so are that sometimes people don’t want to have a bunch of makeup placed on the actors/ actress’ skin, so they create life size beings to recreate the scene (ie. a dead body).

The use of technology has gradually evolved from the 1900′s to the 21st century. The early television screens were extremely small, but the whole television set was extremely big. They were designed just like furniture and were built in size just like any other furniture. As the years progressed, the television screens became larger, while the television sets became smaller and some were portable. The ratio of the television screens became larger than the set itself. They no longer made television as a piece of furniture, but more of a luxury. The Museum of the Moving Image also presents more wonderful materials that allows us to see how much technology and film has progressed since the early days of moving images.

This is a major scene from “Strangers on a Train” 1951 directed by Alfred Hitchcock, where Bruno follows Miriam at the Amusement Park and kills her. Hitchcock does a wonderful job in leaving the audience to anticipate in what is going to happen. For example; from 0:58 where Miriam and the guys get off the boat, Hitchcock does not choose to cut into a different angle, the camera is remain in the same position until 1:06 when Bruno arrives at the dock. The slow shots allow anticipation to the climax; to when Bruno attacks Miriam and kills her.

At the climax, Hitchcock decides to continue playing the amusement music in the background instead of something more intense. The whole idea of choosing to kill Miriam in an amusement and the music makes the whole murder seem like a play. It represents how Miriam's life is insignificant and Bruno’s plan was just as easy as a child’s game. Since this film was produced in 1951, it is still in black and white. But it is definitely noticeable that the lighting during the murder was extremely darker than the lighting in previous shots. 

The transition from the first shot to the second shot was a very noticeable because it went from a neutral shot of Bruno looking at Miriam’s boat in front of him to a shot from a distance; where both Miriam and Bruno’s boat enter the tunnel. Hitchcock may have done this on purpose so that the audience can feel the playful sensation through Bruno’s point of view, but then suddenly realize the tension of what Bruno is going to do.

"What I hear"

The Notes of Shore Parkway

Sometimes the loudest places can be the most peaceful while the quieter places bring out the noise, the motion, the tempo, and the liveliness of nature. Where I live, there aren’t many stores or groceries; just houses upon houses. Once in a while a pedestrian rolls into the driveway and the fallen branches crunch underneath the tires of their automobile. The wind howls through the one way alley and hisses at the trees that smack against each other.

The wind traps in the alley for awhile; whistling, then decides to make its way back to the sea. It turns left into the expressway where the cars rush side by side in a synchronized fashion as if they are racing with the wind. Here and there the tires screeched, but that didn’t stop them from racing. The wind continuously blew; pushing the waves onto the shore furiously but never able to reach the expressway.

Right before the exit, there is a playground. A space full of children’s laughter, baby’s crier, and little one’s screeches of excitement. The swings squeak every time the child pulls back. The basketball thumps every time the player bounces the ball between his legs. The handball pops every time it leaves the palms of ones hands. And then you hear the beat of your heart pump faster as you slow down and gasp for a breathe. Everything loud becomes quiet, and everything silent forms a rhythm.

What Keeps You Rolling?

What I find beautiful may not exactly mean it may please your eyes. Honestly, a lot of the times I just point and shoot a picture for the sake of doing so. Because, who cares?! You can never judge something unless you have something to judge upon. It’s all about taking chances and looking at things in different angles and perspectives. A lot of the time I find myself lost and unsure of what I want to do. We as people, know that there are opportunities out there, but it is really about whether or not we are willing to take the step, and seek out for what is right for us.

The idea of creating an effective picture and/ or video is intriguing because there are just times where a picture and/or video will make you feel something, and yet there are no words to explain that emotion. My goal is to allow my audience to be able to relate to my work but also allow it to bring uncertainty of feelings and emotions that triggers a weird connection. I find myself fascinated with taking landscape pictures and photos of nature. Landscapes and nature tend to sway our emotions back and forth depending on the initial intention of the work or sometimes just how the audience approaches it.

I first encountered Film and Acting in High School and I fell in love with it. My experience being on camera and behind the rolling camera has allow me to see myself and the world in a different way. The advantages of pictures and film, are that you can manipulate what you want the audience to see and be creative to attract your audience. I would’ve never thought that I would want to pursue my dream in Film because of the effort and patience you have to put into it. But then again, you never know unless you try. I am still trying to find what is right for me and along this path, I want my work to be effective and meaningful to the ones that find connection to it.
