jack, here we are again. another year of life, another breath, another day. 20 years ago today you emerged in the world and i unknowingly became your big sister. we’ve spent the past 17 years together, and now 3 apart. it’s strange not to be with you today eating cake or pie or a fancy five-course meal like the ones you requested in elementary school. nevertheless, i wish i could be there to give you a hug. i hope you have had the most joyful of birthdays knowing you are loved even from far away. thank you for being the person i’ve needed in every moment. for offering me a place in your world, for the chance to know you for all of you. my first friend, my best friend. you are a beautiful, unique being. blessed by gifts and abilities. a blessing to others with your ability to feel deeply. think deeply. love deeply. people have often assumed i taught you everything. what to believe. what to do. there has been this idea that you follow in my footsteps. but i think perhaps it has been the opposite. in some ways, i follow in yours. or perhaps we wade through the muddiness of life hand in hand, together. you have taught me more than anyone. you have been my greatest blessing with every twist and turn. i love you hermana. and i miss you every moment we are apart. feliz cumpleaños. thank you for your life ♥️ . . . . no one else will get this but you and i didn’t know where else to put it, but in case you have forgotten, make sure to “turn left on south chestnut” (at Yuma, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/B82ZEQvFFsPJNZ_dw2whjpwML19zFkmf8Hmqy80/?igshid=xkdjbv8ejwi8

creston neighborhood 9/19-1/20 these are a few pictures from my time spent living in creston. i moved from creston about a month ago, but this place and its memories hold a particularly special place in my heart. i’m thankful to have lived in this place in the moment i did. i’m thankful for the ways this neighborhood pushed me to know grand rapids more intimately. how to navigate it, how to find my ways home. where to eat. how to live away from the college bubble. living in creston challenged me, grew me, and encouraged me to invest wholeheartedly and care about place. i’m thankful for my home in creston - nizhoni house. for all the memories. for bermuda (the creepy doll). the bat fiascos and broken appliances. and the creeky floors. i’m thankful for my housemates last semester and all the laughter and joy that ensued in our lives together. i’m thankful for board games, sledding on dining hall trays, christmas caroling. the silly, the serious. the commitment to caring for one another each day. one thing i learned in my time at nizhoni and in creston was to pay closer attention to the ordinary. to stop and watch the things we often pass by quickly. in my time walking around creston, i took many pictures in an attempt to capture moments of the ordinary. small things. simple things. but sacred moments and sacred things. in creston i learned that every moment is holy. every moment is sacred - a gift. here are some of my sacred moments. here are some of my holy moments spent alone and in the company of my loving housemates. these moments are ones i’ll continue to cherish as i journey on to my new home in eastown. thank you creston, sending my love (at Creston, Grand Rapids) https://www.instagram.com/p/B80ANcilTUCO9SDyvsF5wk4VRunKreSQxyIPvE0/?igshid=g531fzu5tgwj

since classes have started again, i’ve been thinking and reflecting on the month of january. at the very beginning of january i spent a few days in sunny, warm ft. lauderdale, florida. with all the snow that has been dumped on grand rapids in the past few days, warmth sure sounds like a dream. nevertheless, i’m thankful for my time spent at the q christian fellowship conference and for the communion i was invited to join in on. there is something life-giving and healing about learning and getting to know others in such an affirming, inclusive, and committed space. the theme of the conference this year was “The Great Communion”. the idea that all are welcome at the communion table. all are needed, valuable, indispensable, and of great honor and worth. at times i’ve felt unwelcome at the table, but i’ve been reminded this month that i am welcome, needed, and valuable for all i bring and all of who i am. everyone is. all are of great value and worth. we ought to remind ourselves of that more often. i’ll leave this longer reflection with the beautifully worded ethos from the conference. these are not my words, but when i first heard them, they spoke something to me. i hope they speak to you too: “We feast from one table where all are welcome; We wrestle for equity because all are necessary; We create safety for the rejected so that all are honored; We hold true to God’s undying love for all since all are God’s beloved. May we enter into this blessed Communion and, just as God loves us unceasingly, may we reflect the Divine increasingly.” (at Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8aRE07pq7ROw8uxxgdINBMOmy3OdgC_7PIlwo0/?igshid=xfavr1lf5xu4
i thought about the movie “Cars” the other day and realized it came out in 2006...which was 14 years ago....was it really that long ago when i was cracking up at Mater’s cow tipping and jamming out to “Life is a Highway”. doesn’t seem like that long but also it does. anyways, enjoy these pictures of the highway in new mexico at sunset a month ago. i’m missing my sister, family, and the warm sun in this cold MI weather. life is weird and takes a lot of strange and unexpected turns. who knew i’d end up where i am. but “Cars” taught me from a young age that the unexpected things take you on beautiful journeys. so here is to unexpected twists and turns in life. and here is to “Cars” and life before iPhones and Instagram. so simple and sweet. but life right now is also sweet. i recently found out that yuma is the sunniest place in the U.S. like it’s not in the top ten... it’s number 1. so it’s strange i ended up in one of the least sunny places in the country (but i still love it here!!)...nevertheless, enjoy the yuma sun, cabbage fields, and my favorite - the orange trees 🍊 (at Yuma, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7kPn3fFB6IbNnOvmkgvt-b5FRfIXkXkLmzjGs0/?igshid=vuxe4bcmkzqt
