I know my phone doesn’t do The Moon 🌚 justice BUUUUT last night was a huge lunar event! A red crescent moon! ——- The crescent shape is just one of the Moon's naturally-occurring phases. Contrary to (and VERY sadly) what teachers in secondary schools are teaching, and misinformation being disseminated by the general (and uneducated) public, this is NOT caused by the Earth casting its shadow onto the Moon. Phases only occur due to the geometry involved in a 3-body system between the Sun, Moon and Earth. It's all about viewing angles. And if you apply logic and think about it reasonably, we also see phases of Venus, as did Galileo. There's just absolutely no way that can be caused from the Earth casting its shadow onto the surface of Venus. So that means without a doubt, it happens because of the angles between the 3 bodies. ——- The reason you're seeing the red colour is due to something we call refraction. When light--in this case, reflected sunlight onto the Moon--enters a medium (our atmosphere), that light gets bent, almost like the way light gets bent when entering a prism. Because the angle at which this usually occurs is low in the sky from your particular viewing location, that refracted light is passing through the most areas of the atmosphere; when low in the sky, the light has furthest to travel. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSkjeL7hkYf/?utm_medium=tumblr
