can i ask what disappointed you most about warrior? i’ve been meaning to watch it because my brother keeps recommending it but tbh i trust your taste more than his so if you don’t think it’s worth it i’ll take your word for it. also just wanted to say thanks bc i’ve discovered a lot of interesting and cool stuff through your blog.
thank you! ok SO warrior sounds really good in theory: a peaky blinders-esque period drama about the chinatown tong wars in post-gold rush San Francisco, conceived by legend Bruce Lee, with an all-Asian lead cast of actors with martial arts backgrounds...
but the showrunner was a white man. idk what made Shannon Lee and Justin lin make this decision I'm guessing pressure from a racist network, but the showrunner and head writer of this show was a white man named Jonathan tropper, who sidelined the Asian "leads" and focused the story on their white supremacist enemies, Supposedly in the name of giving the show a political angle/more historical context. if you cut all the scenes where it is just white people talking out of any episode, you will be left with 20 minutes max of Asian screen time.
what's really sad is Shannon Lee and the asian cast members have talked so much about all the meaningful things they worked to convey in their storylines which they believed in so much, and when you watch their scenes it's definitely all There, but it got buried beneath all the white nonsense
the show goes through So many lengths to present the Main White Supremacist as a Cool Macho Guy who actually isn't racist he's just mad Chinese labourers are taking jobs from his fellow Irishmen so he and his gang mutilate and hatecrime them on a regular basis but he's not racist oh he even gets a romance arc in season 2 bc he deserves to be humanised apparently???? sure. also we're supposed to believe his basic boxing style can match the main characters kungfu prodigy skills which is soooo laughable
the level of graphic violence inflicted on characters of colour is disproportionate to the whites. this is a martial arts show with of course a lot of violence, but when white characters get hurt, they take it like Men and keep going, while the asian characters are shown absolutely SUFFERING pain, rolling on the ground in humiliation, lots of gore etc. they are the most brutalised
lots of white saviour romance dynamics! and just bc one of them is wlw romance doesn't make it okay!
then of course there's your standard hypersexualisation of Asian women. Dianne doan's character is the only Asian woman in this show who doesn't have any scenes that take place in a brothel.
oh and those racialised depictions of violence? it goes tenfold for the asian women characters
not as bad as the above points but it sucks seeing all these really talented actors w martial arts backgrounds performing sick choreo but it's filmed SO BADLY you can't see any of it
I only watched warrior for the asian cast members (also lol @ them casting all these people from Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam etc to play Chinese characters) but I'm truly so glad this show is dead. the failure of this show to meet its premise makes me so upset but it's better off gone, because there was no coming back from all that shit. sorry for typing up all this i held back and these are actually only 30% of my problems w the show but I gotta stop I gotta move on
