tbh it kind of annoys me sometimes when people act like all of omegaverse is just. women projecting their silly little Women Misogyny Problems onto gay men. like not to say that never happens, there certainly are a lot of common parallels with the ways in which omegas are mistreated by their society or between stuff like suppressants & birth control etc., but i feel like it can be wildly overstated sometimes??

perhaps this is just my own bias, but i think it Is important to recognize that, fundamentally, the omegaverse is a porn trope and thus the omega/alpha dynamic is often more about a kink relationship than a gendered one. and while that's certainly something that we can translate over to gender roles/expectations, for better and for worse, it's not exactly the same and trying to fit it all into the Woman Problems box just doesn't always fit all that cleanly.

(part of me also wonders if part of this bias comes from the fact that the longer/more world-building centered stories tend to be taken more seriously as Literature Worthy of Analysis, as opposed to all that other icky sexy slop that clearly could never hold any meaningful value or literary interest. but maybe that's another conversation...)

i think the better comparison to make this idea more clear is that the relationship of omegaverse -> gender stuff is similar to that of humanoid-animal stories -> race stuff.

while some stories about humanoid-animal based societies can be a clear allegory for something like race (e.g. zootopia), in some stories the author can take more of the approach of actually legitimately just trying to figure out how this society would function, with the social-allegory stuff leaking in more subtly, if at all (e.g. beastars). similarly, while some authors will directly use omegaverse as a way of trying to represent women's gender issues, perhaps even to the point of creating a kind of dystopia or pushing omega-discrimination to the furthest extreme a la the handmaid's tale, some authors also just want to write a world where this particular brand of kinky dynamic is mainstream and/or expected, and see where that leads them.

and, frankly. even when there IS an allegory sometimes you've gotta be careful in interpreting what that allegory is Of in the first place. it should be clear that not every story about humanoid-animals is going to be commenting on america-centric race relations, even if there is some kind of societal commentary baked into it about the (expected and/or observed) relationship between certain social groups. similarly, not every omegaverse story is necessarily going to have the exact same understanding of what gender even is, or be commenting on/responding to the same kinds of current or past social problems.

point is, i think we've gotta be more careful when trying to read into this kind of thing. certainly, fantasy and scifi and alternate-human society stories can be fascinating and great settings to explore more complex or realistic issues, particularly relating to bigotry or social discrimination. to a degree, i don't really think any story that emotionally resonates with a person can be fully detached from human-based, real-life problems, regardless of how fantastical of a setting they may be put in.

but that relationship is not always as straightforward as the simplest connection may seem, and our understanding and analysis would benefit a lot if we could move past this instinct to view fandom-born concepts like omegaverse as these intrinsically woman-based woman stories that are all about projecting our horrible, sad experiences with gender onto little fake gay men because we're just too traumatized and pathetic to figure it out any other way. not only because it's not always true, because yes even slash authors are capable of writing complex and meaningful stories that are about more than just blunt emotional projection, but also because it makes the instances where that is genuinely happening that much more difficult to engage with meaningfully and with empathy.

it shouldn't be the expectation that every single story a woman writes is secretly about her experiences with being a woman. sometimes a story is just about kinky fuck-or-die desperation sex, and that's okay. beautiful, even.

Officially denouncing our break from Tumblr. It's been long enough, we went on a break due to immature people and we couldn't handle seeing them continue to talk about us. We kept looking at their pages, it just wasn't very healthy. We're back now. Maybe they'll continue talking about us, but I do not care. Hello everyone. :)
