Can't help but think that Reunion will just be the latest attempt for D9 to cash in on nostalgia and the remaining good will from OG fans. The story and the plot from the trailers feel like an poor imitation of the original and while LiS2 and TC were far from perfect but at least they dared to explore new characters, settings and ideas. The world that DONTNOD created has so much potential but studios and some fans are stuck in the past and keep going back to same old well.
Double Exposure proves that Life is Strange works best as an anthology. As much as we might love the characters from one game, the nature of the franchise means that we the players decide how their stories end. And the endings themselves are so divergent that it's virtually impossible to create a direct sequel that honors players' choices from the previous game in a way that feels meaningful and authentic. The stories we create for them after the credits roll aren't constrained by things like time and money. Game studios have to focus on telling the new story while trying to balance two or more endings and so disappointment is inevitable for players that chose A instead of B.
Instead of making direct sequels that mostly exist to cash in on goodwill and nostalgia, each LiS game should be treated like a self-contained narrative that players shape with their choices. Each subsequent entry should tell another story in this vast and wondrous world instead of trying to extend a story that has already been told.
So hear me out...
Chris Eriksen was born in 2007, Double Exposure takes place in 2023-2024 so Chris would be 16-17 the same age as Warren when he attended Blackwell. Caledon is an art school and their admissions might be more portfolio and interview based than requiring a high school diploma, plus people skip grades all the time. So all I'm saying is... there's a chance.
The timeline where Deck Nine only makes sequels
How much does the new LiS game cost?
Some might say... it's Price-less.
Max Caulfield returns in Life is Strange Double Exposure, an all-new supernatural murder mystery in the award-winning Life is Strange series, by Deck Nine Games. Coming October 29 2024.
