Working on Wittgenstein with Doug Hall

Here’s a brief overview of some work-in-progress under our momentaudio.com banner - the realization of a sound work conceived of by Doug Hall, with Jim McKee, the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Lisa Bielawa, Starr Sutherland, and collaboration with Meyer Sound and BugID, recording by Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound. My role involves consultation and collaboration across all phases of the project from systems design and concepting, speaker siting, performance and recording, editing, spatialization and mix. The final work will be a 16-channel permanent outdoor installation at Oliver Ranch in Geyserville, California.

Oscar Nominated:  Last Day of Freedom

A wonderful animated documentary film I mixed designed sound for.

Academy Award Nominee 2016, Short Documentary category

Last Day of Freedom  by Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman music by Fred Frith, sound by Jeremiah Moore 31 minutes When Bill Babbitt realized that his brother Manny had committed a crime, he agonized over the decision to call the police, knowing that Manny could face the death penalty but hoping he would instead receive the help he needed. Manny, an African-American veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, suffered from PTSD and had found it difficult to obtain healthcare.

I'm so thrilled on so many levels. This is a very strong yet approachable film about the injustices of the death penalty - and it may prove to be a good political moment for it. The film's success is also, to me, a proof of the value of an engaged, multidisciplinary art practice such as Dee and Nomi have.

Also it should be mentioned that this is the only short documentary in the running this year which is not backed by a large media entity or foundation.  

The film also won Best Short at the International Documentary Association Awards.

Sound and making the VR medium work

Good VR piece by cartelmike over on Medium - Why VR “Storytelling” does not currently work. And can it ever work?

...I don't agree that the web is lost as a storytelling medium...

One of my favorite web stories is the interactive documentary Welcome to Pine Point from The Goggles and canada's NFB interactive. (Made immersive via a nice media framework w/ smooth sound fades and loops.) Sound is the contextual engine that makes it work, with music as an emotional dance-partner / grounding point.  As a period nostalgia piece the various media-addled clips have wonderful ghostly presence.  

I think there are similar clear capacities for VR to weave stories in this kind of sound-contextualized guided-interactivity framework with through-music.

Chinese Whispers: Sound+Image Installation

Chinese Whispers Bay Chronicles

A video and multichannel sound installation about the forgotten history of Chinese shrimp fishing around San Francisco Bay.  A project by Rene Yung in collaboration Jeremiah Moore (Sound) and Chihiro Wimbush (Video). 

Semi-abstract filmed images from the Grace Quan sailings to former Chinese shrimping camp sites and fishing grounds are projected on curved fabric scrim material, the shape and scale of which evokes a boat’s sail. Surround 5.1 ambient sound transports the audience, while a tactile transducer in a bench seat renders physical the material processes of shrimping on the San Francisco Bay.

A Farmer’s Son: Sound Design and Mix for PhilDev Foundation

“My story could be your story. As Filipinos, it must be our story.” Dado Banatao was born the son of a farmer in the rural Philippines. He grew up in poverty, without shoes or access to electricity. In the 1980s, Dado's innovations helped usher in the era of the personal computer. He pioneered the PC chipset and graphics acceleration architecture that continue to be two of the foundation technologies in every PC today. Along the way, Dado founded three companies: S3, Chips & Technologies and Mostron. This is his story, filmed in March of this year on location in Cagayan, Cebu and Manila. @LARGE: Ai WeiWei on Alcatraz -  Sound Work Q+A from For-Site Foundation

Moment Audio Group, our collaborative company, consulted on, designed and implemented and installed systems for, and performed on-site audio mastering for @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz on dislplay Oct 2014 to April 2015. Information on the show's impact here.

Illumination consisted of two long musical pieces, one Tibetan and one Hopi, in adjacent psychological observation cells within the Hospital Wing at Alcatraz. Video Walkthrough

The sound components of the show were well regarded critically, and specifically called out by many visitors as being especially strong experiences.

Balance/Unbalance: Acoustic Ecology Field Recording Workshop

March 25-26, Tempe Arizona

At the Balance/Unbalance 2015 conference on water, climate and place in Tempe, Arizona, I had the opportunity to lead a field recording workshop alongside the wonderful composer and listener Annea Lockwood and the rather amazing us-mex-border sound artist Glenn Weyant.

It was lovely to spend time with a group of thoughtful listeners, many of whom were quite well practiced.

The workshop was organized by the American Society for Acoustic Ecology, which is a membership organization dedicated to promoting a holistic understanding of sound, listening, and environment through research and creative exploration.

Hog's Tooth is the story about a young Scout Sniper, Andy Weston, who is deployed on his first combat mission in Iraq. As a new team member, Weston is eager to prove he is ready for the challenges and rigors of extended sniper missions. In an unanticipated turn of events, he finds himself behind the rifle in a compromising position. Under the pressure of the mission and of the military, Weston will make a decision that will forever change his life.
