A little heads-up can help students engage with uncomfortable and complex topics, and a little sensitivity to others, at the most basic level, isn’t coddling. Civic discourse in this country has become pretty ugly, so maybe it’s not surprising that students are trying to create ways to have compassionate, civil dialogue.

Trigger Warnings, Safe Spaces and Free Speech, Too - The New York Times

Students, y’all. Student activists. What a great response to that ugly U of Chicago statement. The author really nails the institutional interest in construing trigger warnings as an intellectual threat: a tidy way of ignoring students’ specific concerns about access and transparency.

The administration wants to appear as an intellectual force beating back destabilizing waves of political correctness that have rocked college campuses. But the focus of student protests hasn’t been the lack of trigger warnings and safe spaces. Instead, many protesters want the university to evaluate how it invests its money, improve access for students with mental illnesses and disabilities, support low-income and first-generation students, and pay its employees fair wages. They have been pushing for more transparency in the school’s private police force, which has resisted making most of its policies public in the face of complaints. The university is also under federal investigation over its handling of sexual assault cases.

Yet, the administration has refused to meet with student groups who have asked to discuss these issues, and it has threatened to discipline students who staged a sit-in protest. The university even hired a provost who specializes in corporate crisis management and dealing with “activist pressure.” While the university accuses students of silencing opposing voices, it continues to insulate itself against difficult questions.

i thought i was going to like applying to jobs because i like talking about myself and making up new fake ideas BUTTTTT it turns out i hate it and it makes me sad and scared and i CANNOT FIGURE OUT how to be a professional academic, and i think i confuse them and/or make it seem like i’m coming for them when i’m not (or, like, am, but only like lowkey am) and then i talk about trigger warnings too much at dinner and i think i’ll never be able to behave correctly, like, there are social cues about not to be loud and weird and infodump-y that i am totally missing in these spaces, ugh, my poor fragile brain :/

can someone point me to literature about whether / why the invocation of native peoples and land at academic conferences is good? this seems like a very canadian practice / i have literally only seen trans canadians do it most of whom identify as settlers so like idk if it’s a thing that is important or if it’s just a style of signaling alliance within a specific national framework

It is in this context that we need to think about invitations addressed to trans activists to have a dialogue with trans-exclusionary feminists. Invitations can function as part of a rebuttal system. A dialogue is not possible when some people exercise arguments as weapons by treating others as evidence to be rebutted. When you are asked to provide evidence for your existence, or when you are treated as evidence, your existence is negated. Transphobia and antitrans statements should not be treated as just another viewpoint that we should be free to express at the happy table of diversity. There cannot be a dialogue when some at the table are in effect (or intent on) arguing for the elimination of others at the table. When you have “dialogue or debate” with those who wish to eliminate you from the conversation (because they do not recognize what is necessary for your survival, or because they don’t even think your existence is possible), then “dialogue and debate” becomes a technique of elimination. A refusal to have some dialogues and some debates is thus a key tactic for survival.
