Here’s your warning for potential brain poisoning, written more in streams of thoughts than proper thesis and support lol

There are 3 versions of Akagi in total and they differ ever so slightly that each can have their own dynamic with Kaiji already lol but I think the common thread is that they mostly likely hit it off as friends first because Akagi’s attracted to authentic and genuine ppl and Kaiji respects people with skills. It’s funny with their personal brand of friends to lovers though because I imagine the only difference between when they’re friends and when they’re dating is that they kiss and have sex sometimes, maybe, lol. And they prob don’t even have a proper convo about moving to the next stage either, it sort of happens very randomly through mutual agreement that feels fleeting in hindsight ngl.

And they’re sort of complementary in that they’re both intellectually rewarding to each other, so conflict is usually minimal, though this applies more to older Akagi in Ten lol. Younger versions of Akagi still leads life on an ego so any disagreements can lead to an all out brawl. They’re kinda first gay love coded in that way lmao where they’re not entirely familiar with or open to the idea of being attracted to the same sex so the only way they can process their attraction is through violence. They do that thing where they wrestles and got a boner from that or they wrestles to get rid of a boner lol

And like gay love that never got addressed nor properly explored, I don’t think they would last very long 💔 Young Akagi bc both have the average ego of a guy and will probably prefer their own paths over building relationships and if not that then they’ll get into a conflict of ideal so bad that one/both of them broke it off. My personal characterization of Akagi is kinda akin to a “child god” ala It's a Good Life by Jerome Bixby. He’s not entirely malicious, he doesn’t go out of his way to cause harm but he’s not harmless either and that creates a stimulating power struggle between him and Kaiji. And like a “child god”, he’s highly capable in one area while still requiring care and gentle guidance in others. Kaiji isn’t exactly a leader type in the sense that he has a vision he wants to achieve but he wants to help people and that puts him in a more reluctant brotherly role than an active parental one. He’s kinda perfect for Akagi in that way bc Akagi doesn’t want to be boxed in and Kaiji won’t go out of his way to influence how Akagi do things, not unless material harm happens.

The fun is seeing them navigate where they want to be in the relationship and to what extent do they want to relinquish control. Neither wants to compromise their autonomy but Kaiji in particular is prone to feelings of directionlessness that Akagi can fill in without embodying any of the bureaucrats that Kaiji hates.

And that constant power imbalance will lead to some very hot but very dubious encounters, not limited to sex 🤫

when akagi likes someone he rly likes them and he doesnt need a reason 4 it and he does a lot of subtle but out of character things for that person. he likes being around them and making them happy and helping them out. see: nangou, osamu. kaiji is fucking pitiful and akagi just makes fun of him

So lets talk about Kaiji's sexuality and his romantic partners. Your theories? (im too shy to come off anon shut up)

unlike with akagi, i stand by 100% the idea that he’s straight. kaiji is straight like i know i ship him in a bunch of gay pairings but that’s not anything at all, because while i feel that he IS straight, there would be exceptions, almost definitely. if he were close enough with someone, and they were important to him platonically, he’d hesitate, but when asked to have a relationship, he’d most likely say yes. even if it was just to fooling around, like if sahara asked if he wanted to jerk each other off, he’d act nervous about it but probably say yes. with him, if it was with someone he cared about for long enough, he wouldn’t say yes due to physical attraction, but rather because he simply cares about them that much. another example of how he’d make an exception is if he felt the sort of pleasure he could get from another man and accept and admit that it feels good, because while still being a very respectable person and being a very sweet and giving and selfless man, he’s still very sinful when it comes to himself. he’s greedy and lazy and gluttonous, so if something felt good, he’d like it and want more of it. a sexual relationship wouldn’t mean as much to him as a romantic relationship, but he’d get very passionate during sex, and most likely develop feelings for someone because they had sex. kaiji is straight, certainly, but there would be exceptions.

in terms of who he’d be the happiest with romantically, that’s actually pretty hard to say. in the entire fkmt universe, there’s not really anyone he’d be unconditionally be happy with, since he’s not really a very social person. he doesn’t really LIKE anyone else but he respects them and wants to help them, and the only likely person in kaiji’s universe that he really likes is sakazaki. sahara would be a good candidate, but as much as kaiji would care about him, sahara would piss him off so much, and sakazaki already has a family and he’d only be attracted to kaiji because he was jealous of his youth and his body and his perseverance. he wouldn’t get along with gai, and he wouldn’t get along with zero because zero would be on too high of a level for him. him and mikoko are the only canon pairing in kaiji and he really doesn’t like her at all.

the only person he’d be happy with would be akagi. oyagi 100% and regular akagi 90% because kaiji feels the best around older men i have so much to say about oyagi and kaiji but i’ve been tryuing to type this for four hours i’m so sick today hahaha

Small detail I noticed but Makie learned from her first fight with Manji. The next time we see her pull the same move she uses a different weapon to block attacks so that hers still has the freedom to move.

one thing i really like is how money symbolizes power and is used treated more as a concept in a lot of fukumoto’s works, where it doesn’t really seem to matter more than just a status thing but people still strive for it and go to such lengths for it, and the asian three in kazuya-hen flat out say “money is garbage, money is useless, it drives people mad and people die over it” and it really makes you think why so many people in his stories just blindly go after money especially when they don’t do anything with it

kaiji fucking wastes his money and then feels bad about himself after he’s out of debt, ginji and morita constantly strive for more (in morita’s case, it’s more like it’s just because ginji tells him to), kazuya throws his around to impress people, akagi outright uses it as a way to manipulate people, he throws his own life away for money but could care less about it

if money really mattered so much to where their entire lives are dedicated to just getting money, why would they just do nothing with it

i really liked what mario said when he started crying saying he was tired of people fighting over money, what he said was really powerful and meaningful, and really causes you to stop and realize what all these people are doing and actually think about it. it may come across as just someone who’s poor doesn’t understand the power of money, but i like how it takes someone who’s never had money to say he’s tired of money (when all these series are focused around gambling and making money)

Awhile ago, while looking at an illustrations featuring Makie, I noticed that Samura would sometimes have Makie hold her headscarf in place by holding it between her lips, which reminded me of the moretta mask, which is worn in a similar way.

There isn’t enough evidence to confirm that Samura’s intention is the same as that of the moretta mask, but consider Makie’s reserved nature and the fact that the moretta mask evokes mystique and allure through silence, I feel there’s some kind of connection.
